réf. 7529ffFunazaki & Flynn 2011. No. 1 of a limited edition of 5. 12.6 x 22.5 cms. Text by Danny Flynn handset in Baskerville 12pt metal type and printed in letterpress. Illustrations by Eri Funazaki screen-printed with additional gold tooling. Bound by Eri Funazaki in full smooth goat skin with very thin recessed red leather onlay that depicts the image of a building site crane. Screen-printed doublures. Housed in a screen printed paper covered slipcase with blue goat skin edges.“The prose by Flynn involves a sad battle of wits and the humorous missed communications between a man and a woman. Illustration of the urban landscape with cranes office buildings construction sites implies this couple’s life will carry on for some time but will be taken over by some new lives by the end”. Funazaki reflects the text beautifully in here illustrations and binding design. Eri Funazaki studied Graphic Design at Joshibi University Tokyo Japan and then worked as a graphic designer. In 2000 Eri graduated from the London College of Printing with a BA in Book Arts and Crafts and was elected Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2007. She has been awarded several bookbinding prizes and currently works as a designer and fine bookbinder at Shepherds Bookbinders London. Her work is in various private collections in the UK and abroad including The British Library. Eri makes superb finely bound artists’ books with her artistic partner and writer Danny Flynn. This collaboration began almost immediately after her graduation and they have since produced several works in a series involving letterpress screen-printing linocut-printing and fine design bindings using various alternative book structures. Their book works have been exhibited in The Royal Academy Summer Show in 2014 and are among the collection of the Crafts Council. ff[Funazaki & Flynn] hardcover
réf. 55577Santiago de Chile: self-published printed by Herrera y Aldana 1941. Octavo 19 × 13.5 cm. Original staple-stitched self-wrappers with reproduced collage by Braulio Arenas and a drawing by Cáceres reproduced on rear wrapper; 8 pp. Very good. Sole printed edition of this catalog for the first exhibition of the Chilean Surrealist group "Mandragora". The "Mandragora" group was strongly influenced by the French surrealists. This relationship is also evident in the name. Mandrake Mandragora is a plant steeped in legend not least in Chile. This is not only due to the hallucinogenic effect it is said to have. This nightshade plant is said to induce psychedelic states of intoxication with intense color and image perceptions fantasy worlds between breathtaking beauty and infinite horror. In addition to this connotation typical of Surrealism the mandragora plant was associated with numerous miracles in which the plant took on the form of the crucified or the Mother of God for example. Cf. Ulrich Pfisterer Mandragora: Plants as Artists Heidelberg 2024 The catalog texts have the character of manifestos. Braulio Arenas in particular emphasizes the group's affinity with the French Surrealists. Among other things he states: "This exhibition has certainly aroused the anger of a few old men who languish sadly in Paris in the shadow of the brightest minds of Surrealism and now proclaim the death of this movement in America thereby only sealing their own death sentence by pretending to be the masters of a generation that despises and spits them out. In fact names that are so dear to us such as André Breton Paul Eluard Benjamin Péret Max Érnst etc. will not be so easily erased from our memory as they stand for freedom of imagination and freedom of thought." The combative text does not name the figure who for Mandragora represented everything they rejected. The fourth issue of the journal "Mandrágora" on the other hand describes in detail an action by Arenas in which he interrupted a lecture by Pablo Neruda demanded accountability for the donations Neruda had collected on behalf of Spanish exiles and tore up Neruda's lecture manuscript in the process. However the scandal announced in the two texts did not materialize. Instead the exhibition held at the National Library during the Christmas season was praised. In a note in the daily newspaper "Las Últimas Noticias" it was reported that the exhibition had succeeded in "attracting the interest of a broad sector of the population and . gathering a remarkable number of visitors." Subsequently the Mandragorists organized a "Soirée Surréaliste" published the periodical 'Leitmotiv' after the journal "Mandragora" and held smaller exhibitions until in December 1948 they succeeded in organizing the most important international surrealist exhibition in Chile at the Galerie Dédalo. On display were small-format drawings by Hans Arp René Magritte Toyen Wifredo Lam Jacques Hérold André Masson Matta Madelaine Novarina Victor Brauner André Breton Arshile Gorky Salvador Dalí Óscar Domínguez Leonora Carrington and Yves Tanguy. It was the first major exhibition of modern art from the first half of the twentieth century which had been shown in Chile until then. Cf. Cat. Papeles Surrealistas: Dibujos y pinturas del surrealismo en las Colecciones del MNBA Santiago de Chile Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes 2013. As of January 2026 OCLC lists only two copies in North America. unknown

A portfolio of four original woodcuts (by Hern·ndez Pijuan, Eduard Alcoy, Carles Planell, and Rovira-Brull) and a short poem (by "Terri", i.e., LluÌs Terricabres). THE ONLY PUBLICATION OF THE "SILEX" GROUP OF ARTISTS, formed in Barcelona in the mid-1950s. Includes HERNANDEZ PIJUAN'S EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST EDITIONED PRINT (HP 554, unknown to the compilers of the catalogue raisonnÈ until it was discovered after the artist's death and included in the appendix of the fourth volume). Although limited to 150 copies according to the justification, only about 30 were actually assembled (of which this is number 3). Printed on fine Guarro wove paper. IN THIS SET, ALL OF THE PRINTS ARE SIGNED IN PENCIL. THE POEM IS SIGNED IN PEN. 4to. Loose as issued in a printed wrapper. A bit of spotting and wear to wrapper, contents FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. Most of the 30 sets were surely disposed of long before Hernandez Pijuan (and to a lesser degree, Rovira-Brull) became famous, and many others have been broken up for the individual prints. I located only one other complete set. What makes this set even more unusual is the fact that wooducts are extremely rare in Hern·ndez Pijuan's extensive graphic oeuvre: the artist generally preferred lithography and intaglio.
1985Two very large signed and justified original aquatints by Joan Hern·ndez Pijuan. 76 x 112 cm (sheet). Edition limited to 50 impressions printed on fine, thick wove paper. FINE AND BRIGHT, like new. Maluquer 223 and 224. Price is for the set.
