OCLC Number / Unique Identifier:79022119.LThe Atlas Curieux is geographic encyclopedia of images and maps of France with detailed views of the grand waterworks at Marly views of the great palaces and chateaux views and plans of the Paris Observatory and samples of military architecture. Issued in six annual parts from 1700-1705 the maps are based on the new observations of the Académie des Sciences and drawn up with the assistance of Philipe de La Hire.Library of Congress:The French cartographer and engraver Nicolas de Fer was a master at creating maps that were works of art. The maps that he published were printed during the Baroque period when the decorative arts were characterized by ornate detail. De Fer’s detailed maps and atlases were valued more for their decorative content than their geographical accuracy.Nicolas de Fer was born in 1646. His father Antoine de Fer owned a mapmaking firm. At the age of twelve Nicolas was apprenticed to a Parisian engraver named Louis Spirinx. The family business was starting to decline when his father died in 1673. Nicolas de Fer’s mother Genevieve took over the business after the death of her husband. In 1687 the business was passed on to Nicolas and the profits increased after he took over the firm. Nicolas de Fer was a prolific cartographer who produced atlases and hundreds of single maps. He eventually became the official geographer to King Louis XIV of France and King Philip V of Spain. One of de Fer’s major works is an atlas titled L’atlas curieux The curious atlas. 1900réf. 45326Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 1900. First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Small folio 12 x 9 1/2". viii 2 438pp Vol. 1; vii 3 597 1pp Vol. 2. Modern blue cloth with gold lettering to spines. Rare first edition of this first catalogue of the Greek manuscripts on Mount Athos a mountain and peninsula in northeastern Greece and an important centre of Eastern Orthodox monasticism. In this 2-volume set the author lists no less than 6618 fully annotated religious manuscripts at the time of publication 1895-1900. From the time monks first settled on the Holy Mountain and formed an organized monastic community there was a need for books to satisfy their devotional and liturgical needs and also to cultivate the mind. These factors proved decisive in determining the types and content of the manuscripts which gradually began to accumulate in the monasteries and other foundations and which were eventually to form the manuscript collection of each. Includes an extensive Index and bibliography at the end of second volume pp. 477-597. Ex-library bookplate on inside of each front cover and reference sticker on inside of back covers. Stamp at top and bottom edges. Some ink staining at verso of title page and first text page of second volume with one stain slightly affecting lettering. Title pages in English and Greek. Catalogue in Greek. Binding in overall good interior in good to very good condition. Cambridge University Press hardcover

All recently diligently revised and amended. Londini London: Ex officina H. Bynnemani Typographi Anno Domini. 1581. Hardback greyish-brown leather binding probably 18th or more likely 19th century with maroon title label gilt-blocked title and raised bands to spine. Blind-stamped design to boards and spine. Octavo/8vo collation but small measures around 3 1/8" x 4 7/8" x 1 1/4" circa 400-500 pages see below for explanation of unusual pagination and collation Scuffing and wear to binding some discolouration but reasonably clean. Bumping and a little tearing to corners and to head of spine with some loss. Otherwise binding firm. A little cracking to title label but intact with some discolouration. Deckled page edges which are very browned scuffed and otherwise marked. small bookseller label to front pastedown. Some marking a little staining and foxing around pastedowns and endpapers. Toning staining a little light foxing and other marking throughout. Some creasing dog-eared corners and the odd tear with loss to a few leaves including to title leaf which is missing a few characters of text at bottom left-hand corner and is quite fragile and only attached at top. Heavy ink staining to several leaves towards end of book. Occasional underlining marginalia and a little text scored out in several latter pages. Very unusual and defective page numbering. Firstly the numbering is of each leaf not each page and the print is a little unclear for some figures. It appears to run after the initial three blank endpapers and preliminary pages that could presumably be numbered i - vi being the tile page to end of 'epistole' from leaf 1 - 20 13 or 18 25 23 - 25 iB 27 blank 20 - 35 6 64 - 72 74 74 repeating 76 76 repeating - 92. However the leaves do not appear to be pages out of order nor duplications and the pages do all seem to be in correct sequence so it appears to be a printing fault rather than a binding one. The order of the page collation is more accurate sequentially though even then there are a few oddities running after the first three blank endpapers on the basis of numbers denoted on leaves as i-v then vi-viii blank from A i - F viii then G ii G G iv G iii blank G v - T viii no use of U V no use of W X - Z viii Aa i - Ff ii Gg ii-Gg iii Ff iv Gg ii Gg iv Gg iii Gg v - Ii v with blank leaves Ii vi-vii removed and three blank endpapers. See pictures for further information. About the author: John Ravisius or Johannes Ravisius Textor or Jean Tixier de Revisi c. 1470–1542 was a French Renaissance humanist scholar and professor of rhetoric. He was born in Ravisi which is near the commune of Saint-Saulge in the central province of Nivernais. His works which are mostly on the topic of education were widely accepted and employed by French academia. Tixier eventually adopted the Latinised name Johannes Textor Ravisius Nivernensis. Per the epitaph on his headstone Tixier was born in 1470 and died on 3 December 1542. According to Victor Gueneau other scholars pretend that he died on 13 December 1524 and that his brother Jacques completed Jean's book l'Origine de l'imprimerie "The Origin of Printing". Similarly some authors report his year of birth to be approximately 1480. Tixier studied humanities at the College of Navarre. When he graduated he accepted a position in the college's rhetoric department; there he impressed faculty and students alike. In 1520 he accepted a position as rector of the University of Paris. He held the position until 1525 succeeded by William Manderstown. More than thirty editions of his principal work Officina were published as he continued to expand it. Source: Wiki H. 1500réf. 007113Spain 1500. No Binding. Very Good. A well-preserved vellum leaf from a late medieval Iberian Gradual of Antiphonal written in a clear Gothic textura hand with square neumes on four-line red staves. The text is taken from the Passion narrative of Christ in Gethsemane including the phrases "Vigilate et orate ut non intretis in tentationem" and "Pater mi: si possibile est transeat a me calix iste" identifying it as part of the Holy Week liturgy very likely Maundy Thursday or the Tenebrae offices. Recto and verso each contain six lines of text and music. The script shows the characteristic angularity and compressed minims associated with late 15th-century Castillian or Aragonese monastic production. The musical notation is composed of uniform square notes in dark brown ink the staves ruled in red. Margins generous indicating the leaf was not trimmed. Vellum is clean and supple Some minor wrinkling and cockling small patch of adhesive residue at corners and faint offsetting but overall with strong dark text and notation and excellent survival of ruling and musical lines. No losses. Ships unmatted and unframed unknown

1911réf. 004030Washington DC: The Gridiron Press 1911. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. Inscribed by C.K. Berryman the cartoonist to H.W. Berryman. The inscription states "This book is inscribed by the illustrator C.K. Berryman". 8vo. 20 by 16.5 cm. 74 1 pp. Cartoons are of the political luminaries of the day including many names still recognizable such as Elihu Root William Borah Taft TR Robert LaFolette Gifford Pinchot Henry Stimson Woodrow Wilson and on and on. Clever rhymes for the ABC and then clever variants of well-known nursery rhymes. The drawings capture the persons depicted with great fidelity yet impressive economy. In 1907 he left the Post for "The Washington Star" where he drew cartoons until his death. He is probably best known for inspiring the Teddy Bear. 1855réf. 5250London: May 19 1855. About very good. 2pp. on a bifolium. Previously folded. Light wear along top edge; short closed tear at right margin. Scattered faint foxing. With original mailing envelope. This two-page printed circular dated May 19th 1855 from the Anglo-California Gold Mining Company in London offers to convert "unissued shares" of company stock into "preference shares." The first page of the circular reads in part: "You will observe from the enclosed report not present of the adjourned General Meeting that circumstances have arisen in California rendering it imperative that the Director should immediately have at his command a further sum of £6600. You will also observe that the Board have power to convert the unissued shares into preference shares at par to be offered in the first instance to the present holders of shares. The advantage offered to persons taking those Shares is that they are guaranteed a dividend of 25 per cent per annum before any dividend is paid on the other Shares." The second leaf of the bifolium prints a blank form for recipients to purchase said preferred shares. During the first years of the California gold rush approximately 120 companies formed in Great Britain to offer mining shares in the booming goldfields to the public. Many saw these companies as an opportunity to invest in the boom without facing the expense or the danger of traveling to California. Most however ended in failure and investors collectively lost almost £2 million at the time. The Anglo-California Gold Mining Company formed by Luke Williams in March 1849 was one of the first and largest of these British ventures and it sold thousands of ten shilling shares to the public. Williams sent a former Royal Navy Captain Henry Vere Huntley to the Calaveras River in early 1850 to start the operation. When he failed Williams arranged a deal with Fremont's Quartz Rock Mariposa Gold Company to crush and refine their ore and the ore of smaller ventures. To that end the company sent two steam-powered crushing mills to California and when those proved useless to the task the company failed. May 19 unknown
1856réf. 3459n.p.: n.p. 1856. Hardcover. Fair. This quarto-sized scrapbook in green cloth over boards was manufactured c. 1850 by Eayrs & Fairbanks No. 133 Washington St. Boston. It is about half full of contemporary news clippings affixed with paste. The scrapbooker did not comment on them with the exception of one instruction to "See the loose piece."The first 40 pages are from 1856-1857. The majority of articles deal with slavery especially political events in the Kansas Territory "Bleeding Kansas" the Dred Scott Case and President James Buchanan. The first clipping is from Feb. 9 1856 and details a pro-slavery meeting in Missouri addressed by David Atchison. The last clipping in this section is from April 24 1857 and reports on Stanton's speech at Lawrence Kansas. After a break of three blank pages the scrapbook resumes with news of Reconstruction from June 30 1868. There are 6 more pages of eclectica: political news clippings interspersed with a poem by Whittier and advice on How to Keep the Feet Dry.While the scrapbook is unsigned it can be tentatively identified with the Orton family since the last page contains an 1868 20th reunion announcement from the Hamilton College class of 1848 along with 1868 clippings from southwestern Ohio newspapers including the Springfield Ohio Republic. The only surviving member of that class residing near the Dayton-Springfield area is Prof. Edward Orton Sr. Yellow Springs OH where he was president of Antioch College. The 1850s clippings come mostly from New York newspapers particularly the Tribune and the Orton family was living in Chester Orange County NY at that time.Orton went on to become the first President of the Ohio State University from 1873 to 1881.The scrapbook is in fair condition; the pages and paper have held up remarkably well. However the spine is mostly detached and the binding is weak at several signatures. 003477 n.p. hardcover

1905réf. 32109Godthaab Greenland ca.1905. Winter Sports of a Greenlandic Family An attractive image showing a family of Greenlanders sledding and skiing down a hill likely produced by Lars Møller Greenland's premier printer or by Møller's youngest son Steffen. The illustration shows a family of seven Greenland natives sledding down a hill while two other youngsters ski alongside with one of the skiers in the process of falling. Other winter sports enthusiasts cavort in the distance and the stark Greenland landscape is ably depicted. Lars Møller an accomplished printer and illustrator was the dominant figure in Greenlandic printing in the last quarter of the 19th century producing much of the printed output in the country. His son Steffen succeeded his father and produced impressive works in his own right including a native language speller from which this illustration may be an example. 1837réf. 202347Venice: In Insula S. Lazari 1837. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed. Full leather binding with gilt lettering & decoration to spine gilt ruled borders on both boards all edges gilt marbled endpapers engraved frontispiece and title page 6-1/4" x 4” 434 pp. Aucher’s name appears in three different versions on the first leaf: Armenian transliterated Armenian and Latin dated 1847. George Gordon Lord Byron traveled to the Island of St. Lazar where Father Pascal Aucher 1774-1854 taught him Armenian. Together they published Grammar of the English and Armenian Languages in 1819 and contributed to Aucher’s 1821 English Armenian Dictionary. Byron was devoted to the Armenian language writing: “I learned the language of the Armenians in order to understand how and what language the Gods spoke for the Armenian language is the language of the Gods and Armenia is the homeland of the Gods and the Gods come from the Ararat valley.”A translation of twenty-four prayers one for each hour of the day of St. Nerses the Graceful translated into twenty-four languages. This is the culmination of an effort that first had 6 10 14 and then 16 translations. This effort was likely from many of the Mekhitarist monks at San Lazzaro degli Armeni. The monastery was founded in 1715 by twelve monks; when Byron visited there were 70; today there are 12 monks and five novices. Despite the small population St. Lazzaro has been a major center of Armenian studies for centuries and still maintains the third-largest library of Armenian materials in the world. This polyglot prayer book is notable not just for its place in Armenian history and the spread of Orthodoxy but it is also a typographic success in acquiring the various fonts. In Insula S.
