1922réf. 0002248KAMPONG INDONESIA SINGAPORE 1922. On offer is a super original 1922 manuscript diary of a woman who we believe is named Margaret or Mary Discon. While she has not identified herself she does seem to refer to herself at some point in the third person. The diary describes her time spent in Kampong Singapore near Saribue Dolok. Using 8½ x 14 inch sheets of paper folded but loose she describes her time over 17 pages with some photos as titled: "A Day at _____gale." While the first part of the place name is difficult to read we are sure that local researchers and historians will no doubt uncover the location especially given the detailed clues leading up to the spot. Here are some snippets: "It was with gay hearts that we sat in the lamplight making the best breakfast we could with nerves thrilling in anticipation of the days jaunt while the boy and his wife saw to the storing of baskets of provisions; lemons soda waters etc. etc. We stepped into the car as the sun was lighting the east and a cool breeze making coats very necessary. Our days outing had been looked forward to for weeks and the visit of a fellow passenger brought the journey to completion. The jungle sounds were ceasing and domestic animals of all specimens were beginning to stir. First we went through rubber then a long street of palm shaded road through a struggling and picturesque Kampong ." Their car gets stuck in the mud and they have to have the village people dig them out: " .we reached Saribue Dolok which seemed to consist solely of a large store and a missionary's house but they usually have been native Kampong's hidden in the hollows here and there for we saw numerous parties of Balaks silently following each other to the market in Indian file ." They are now on their way to a volcano. Also describes the natives clothing. Back to Kampong. "The Kampong of Harring all lies just above the shore guarded by banyan trees. The rest house is a pleasant little bungalow provided by the Dutch government for visiting officials and lent for a small fee to any traveler. Here we found contrary to repost that a well supplied table was provided .We crossed a small stream the stream was small but gully was broad by a bridge consisting of two thin tree trunks on one side of which was a low rattan rope which gave us help and hardly any confidence ." They finally board a boat and she mentions how the crowds of people started gathering to watch them and has a photo showing just this scene. They finally return to the rest house. The diary pages were folded actually misfolded and the edges of the pages are a bit brittle and chipped with some little loss but overall Fair. . Fair. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. 1794réf. 3703905Rome: Typis Salomonianis 1794. Three works bound together quarto the first main work with folding map 2 plates and an engraved portrait vignette with two shorter pamphlets 24 & 26 pp.; an attractive copy in contemporary patterned vellum boards spine banded red morocco spine label faded. Three works by Paulinus including his important India Orientalis Christiana a study of and introduction to the Carmelite missions in India in the late eighteenth century in a particularly attractive contemporary binding. The work is illustrated with two plates and a fine map of India as well as a smaller vignette portrait of Paulinus himself. Paulinus of St Bartholomew 1748-1806 also known as Johann Philipp Werdin or Wesdin was a missionary and orientalist. A member of the Carmelite Order in 1774 he was sent to India Malabar where he was appointed vicar general of his order. In 1789 he was recalled to Rome in order to report on the mission and given the task of preparing books for the use of missionaries. One of the first Orientalists to note and work on the close relationship between Indian and European languages Paulinus was the author of many learned studies on the east and is best known for having published the first Sanskrit grammar. As an antiquarian who worked from original sources he was fortunate to have the patronage of Cardinal Stefano Borgia 1731-1804; a good Borgia whom he served as private secretary and who financed many of his publications. Both men served long periods on the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide a body preoccupied with exotic languages insofar as they impacted on spreading the christian gospels but also in understanding exotic theologies. In this context the Propaganda Fide was a central recipient of missionary collecting in the field which gave Paulinus exceptional advantages which enabled him to undertake extensive linguistic studies. After Borgia's death his remarkable library and museum were gradually distributed with the important biblical manuscripts mostly being added to the Vatican libraries after the secular materials had chiefly made their way to the national library of Naples. The two rare pamphlets bound in here are both concerned with Borgia's museum: Scitismo Sviluppato. del Museo Borgiano Rome c. 1793 and Lettera. del Museo Borgiano Rome same period both written in Italian not Latin and both discussing the Museo Borgiano. Borgia was particularly expert on Coptic relics but here Paulinus discusses early Brahmanic and other Indian manuscripts in his collection. All of these works are rare although as often the pamphlets are the scarcer. Worldcat lists some 10 copies of the India Orientalis Christiana 2 copies of the Scitismo and only 1 of the Lettera. . In 1932 James Chadwich proved the existence of th atomic particles carrying no electric charge which for this reason he called 'neutrons' the first item offered here. "In 1934 Senator Corbino head of the physics department at the University of Rome urged Enrico Fermi and his collaborators among whom was Brune Pontecorvo to patent a proces they had perfected for the production of artificial radio-activity by slow neutron bombardement. This process was a by-product of repetitions and enlargements of a discovery by Irene Curie and her husband Fredeic Joliot that the bombardment of certain light elements with alpha particles induced radio-activity. Further experiments conducted in 1938 at Berlin by Hahn and Strassmann were reported by Lise Meitner. She and her nephew O.R. Frisch working with Niels Bohr's laboratory found the true explanation of these phenomena. The interpolation of a neutron into the nucleus of a uranium atom caused it to divide into two parts and to release energy amounting to about 200000000 electron volts. This process bore such a close similarity to the division of a living cell that Frisch suggested the use of the term 'fission' to describe it.Halban Jolio and Kowarski established the theoretical possibility of a self-perpetuating reaction." réf. OA224 140 p. 227x145 cm. No wrapper or binding. Few pages are detached otherwise in good condition. Two handwritten inscriptions in Arabic on the last page in contemporary hands indicating that the book was printed in Bulaq. First edition of the famous The Seyahatname Ottoman Turkish : سياØت نامه by Evliyâ Çelebi one of the most influential travelogues of the 17th century Ottoman Empire. The edition included first volume which describes Istanbul. Evliya Çelebi stands among the relatively few seventeenth-century Ottoman prose writers who recorded the places he visited in an unmistakably personal and highly literary voice. His monumental ten-volume Seyahatname Book of Travels preserves exceptionally rich information on the diverse lands through which he journeyed and consequently occupies a central position in the history of Turkish cultural life and the broader tradition of travel writing. The Seyahatname constitutes a unique source for the historical geography of the Ottoman world in the seventeenth century as well as for the Turkish language and its regional varieties as they were spoken in that period. Evliya’s descriptions encompass the general conditions of the localities he visited their geographical situation and historical development and the social characteristics of their inhabitants including language religion dress artistic production and everyday customs. In addition the work provides valuable material for comparative geography art history and ethnography. Of particular significance is its detailed documentation of Muslim–non-Muslim relations within Ottoman society. Evliya offers extensive observations on the daily lives of non-Muslim communities including their demographic presence economic and cultural circumstances places of worship religious practices and communal traditions. His account further preserves a wide corpus of vernacular cultural expression—stories folk songs folk poetry legends fairy tales and rhymed couplets—together with notes on dialectal variation folk dances clothing styles wedding customs entertainment practices and patterns of neighborhood interaction and social conduct. Equally noteworthy is the breadth of architectural and topographical information found throughout the travelogue. Evliya records the distinguishing features of structures such as houses mosques prayer halls fountains inns palaces mansions baths churches monasteries towers castles fortifications roads and synagogues often including remarks on their construction later repairs patrons builders and restorers. He also supplies data on regional culinary culture local administration prominent families and notable individuals—including poets performers and officials of various ranks—while occasionally offering insight into the tools and material equipment characteristic of seventeenth-century Ottoman life.
