rif. 007042Quarter Calf. Very Good. A beautiful illuminated manuscript rendering of Lamb's witty and whimsical classic satiric essay which pokes fun at the extremes engendered by the quest for gastronomic bliss. The illustrations are done in a faux Chinese style as befitting the subject matter of the essay. N.p. n.d. 20th century. 4to. 30 by 24 cm. Unpaginated 16 leaves with content on both sides other than title and final text leaf followed by five blank leaves. With 12 watercolored illustrations most half to nearly full paged with text written with a calligraphic hand. The artist and calligrapher we should think were one and the same but remain anonymous other than initials given at the end which given the letter placement could be FME or FEM. Condition: splitting along rear joint of the leather. Revealed are cords and some of the paper gathering. Boards are splayed. Internally clean and bright and one might fairly rank as fine. unknown books
1917rif. 0064001917. Full Morocco. Very Good. Oblong 21 by 30 cm. 92 numbered leaves with content with log entries more or less statistical on all the versos and pictures and/or original drawings mostly mounted on 58 rectos with some additional loose material. 129 numbered leaves in all. Several of the log pages have mounted photos obscuring the log as it is clear that this game book was at some point re-purposed to be a more general album with some emphasis on sports including also fishing foxhunting and sailing but also there are two pages of photos from South Africa with photos of native tribesmen ostriches a hut Cecil Rhodes house etc. 13 original works of art -- watercolored pencil pen and ink -- in addition to numerous painted fish hook and fly vignettes these sometimes done directly onto the page. Most charming are the comical illustrations of anthropomorphic foxes. Sepia photos are of the country estates their stately homes and rural settings of the hunts as well as the people involved -- the hosts and guests during these country weekends. Many but by no means all of the photos have captions helpfully identifying the participants or the locations. And the log proper provides the names of those participating in the shooting and often what would now be regarded as obscenely large kills. Among the many aristocrats and wealthy in the photographs and/or logs are Lady Randolph Churchill Jennie Churchill Arthur Balfour Lady Minto Mary the famous 4th Countess Henry Lascelles the 5th Earl of Harewood the 5th Earl of Carnavon of King Tut fame as well as the owner of the castle used in Downton Abbey Baron Rothschild Lord de Grey Lord Ashburton Prince Murat the Duke of Buccleuch Prince Duleep de Singh Lord Rosebery and on and on. Country homes include Longleat Greystoke Castle the Hirsel Highcliffe Castle etc. Alexander McDonnell was a son of the 5th Earl of Antrim and a clerk in the House of Lords. Obviously he was very well connected and surely very popular among the upper echelons of English society back then. And we would note that many of the most illustriously titled have frequent entries here; what we have here is a window into a cohesive social network it is our sense. Condition: morocco binding has moderate to heavy wear along edges some scuffs on the boards and spine. The leaves can have a waviness the result of the interaction of the mounted material upon the leaves. A few photos are loose. There is a little bit of a scrappy quality to the book as befitting a log book that was partially turned into something much more and this quality is part of its charm as well. unknown books
1911rif. 004030Washington DC: The Gridiron Press 1911. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. Inscribed by C.K. Berryman the cartoonist to H.W. Berryman. The inscription states "This book is inscribed by the illustrator C.K. Berryman". 8vo. 20 by 16.5 cm. 74 1 pp. Cartoons are of the political luminaries of the day including many names still recognizable such as Elihu Root William Borah Taft TR Robert LaFolette Gifford Pinchot Henry Stimson Woodrow Wilson and on and on. Clever rhymes for the ABC and then clever variants of well-known nursery rhymes. The drawings capture the persons depicted with great fidelity yet impressive economy. Berryman began his career as an artist for the patent office before joining the staff of "The Washington Post" in 1891 as an understudy for its chief cartoonist then becoming its official cartoonist in 1896. In 1907 he left the Post for "The Washington Star" where he drew cartoons until his death. He is probably best known for inspiring the Teddy Bear. The Gridiron Club was founded in 1885 and remains one of the most prestigious press clubs in the nation. The Gridiron Dinner is an annual rite in Washington often attended by the sitting President. This book is uncommon in the original printing. The Gridiron Press unknown books

1920rif. 002014Paris: H. Floury 1920. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Hansi and Victor Huen. Oblong measuring 32 by 24 cm 12.5 by 9.5 inches. Nostalgic look at Alsatian village of yore and as much of Hansi's writings about the French-ness of the village and demonizing the German occupiers who were only recently driven out at the time this copy was issued. The illustrations exude the naive charm of Hansi's best work whose legacy was to create an enduring visual image of Alsatian life. The decorated cloth boards have soiling and the fabric is worn by the corners and the spine extremities. Inside the pages have age toning but otherwise are clean. H. Floury hardcover books

Probably the best tale ever built around toothpicks! A fairy tale of the supernatural retribution meted out to lazy women with a second shorter variant of the same story included as well. This copy has particularly crisp and bright color! Light soiling to covers and some minor waviness where fabric dinged by bottom edge. T. Hasegawa unknown books
1681rif. 001379Amsterdam: Apud Janssonio Waesbergios 1681. Full Calf. Very Good. 330 6 pp. 12mo with copper engraved title page by Giovanni Van Den Avele. Pharsalia is considered a masterpiece and possibly the masterpiece of the Silver Age of Ancient Roman poetry. The epic poem concerns the Roman Civil War at the time of Caesar and most particularly the extended struggle between Caesar and Pompey the Great. Lucanus writing a century later during the reign of Nero far from glamorizing the warfare took a jaundiced view of the fraticidal battle and his portrait of both Caesar and Pompey was far from flattering. His "epic poem" therefore is epic in terms of length scope and ambition not in its portrayal of the principals. Because of the subject matter the popularity of "Pharsalia" has crested at times when a society still steeped in the Classical canon of literature descended into civil strife when the themes and point-of-view of Lucanus really resonated. Never was this more the case than in the seventeenth century when this copy was printed. First there was the final emergence of the Netherlands from under the yoke of Habsburg rule and then there was the English Civil War just to mention two instances both highly germane to the edition at hand. Thus the notes by Grotius and Modern calf with a black spine label and marbled endpapers. The work is incomplete and breaks off during the tenth book which Lucanus was still working on when he was forced to commit suicide. The binding is tight. Some leaves with more toning than others but overall quite clean. There are leaves in which the margins are parlously tight or the header is even close to being partially cut-off -- this is the upshot of the compact size of the copy and was the way the copy was issued over three centuries ago. This particular edition is not mentioned in Brunet. Apud Janssonio Waesbergios unknown books

1564rif. 60128vo. 112 ff pages 2 and 110-112 are blank. Bound in modern paneled calf with gilt-stamped fleurons on front and back covers raised bands. Generally good. The first edition of this plague treatise by Paracelsus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim 1493-1541 the "Luther of Medicine" and one of the key figures in the history of medicine. Written originally in Nördlingen in 1529-1530 it remained unpublished during Paracelsus' lifetime and subsequently taken up and edited for publication by the Paracelsian scholar Adam von Bodenstein 1528-1577. The latter dedicated it to Johann Rudolph Stör von Störenberg Abbot of Murbach and Luders. In addition to the study on pestilence the text includes two short works by Paracelsus: "Vom Preservatiff durch den Schwebel" and "Von der Mummia." In the primary tract Paracelsus for the first time presents his complex theory on the origins of the plague which he believed were the result of astrological and corporeal events set in motion by human sins. "This anthropocentric view of an individual disease is in harmony with Paracelsus' whole philosophy and indeed with Renaissance philosophy in general" Pagel p. 179. Paracelsus also postulates the importance of the principle of sulphur the corresponding agent of the planet Mars in pestilence's causation. He believed that sulphur hidden in three minerals—antimony arsenic and marcasite—affected three corresponding organs: the groin the axillae and the ears. The chapters on causation are followed by sections on remedies. The doctor must cure the agent causing the disease rather than the symptoms of the disease Paracelsus writes. Humoral pathology and its insistence on diet is of no use. "Paracelsus' plague remedies include sulphur spirit of vitriol sulphur sublimate and metals also—for external treatment of boils—toads and decoctions of beetles designed to remove the evil of magnetic attraction but herbs and drugs as prescribed by Ficino and Agrippa are greatly amplified and still appear in a prominent place" Pagel pp. 180-181 n. 151. The editor of this volume Adam von Bodenstein was one of the key figures in the revival of Paracelsian ideas in the German lands in the middle of the sixteenth century. A son of a radical reformer he believed in transmutation of metals into gold and played a key role in the publication of over 80 works by Paracelsus. For his Paracelsianism he was excluded from the faculty and council of Basel University. OCLC records US copies at NYAM NLM Wash. U and UMn. 1945rif. 006923Saki Crimea U.S.S.R.: Privately compiled 1945. Album. This singular and compelling Second World War album was painstakingly compiled decorated and annotated by Royal Air Force Group Captain Walter J. Pickard. Full of mementos documents and photographs the album chronicles the staging preparation and flights which conveyed Winston Churchill as well as other British and American delegates to the Yalta Conference in 1945 earning Pickard the accolades of his commanders the appreciation of his Prime Minister and the Order of the British Empire O.B.E. Not least among the albums contents is the dated inscription of Winston S. Churchill and signed correspondence from Churchills private secretary confirming that Churchill personally received examined and inscribed this album and conveying Churchills appreciation to Pickard. The album is 100 numbered pages bound in leather-covered boards with a hand-labeled title Saki affixed diagonally on the front cover. Saki refers to the Crimean airbase built by the Soviets in the 1930s that served as the landing point for the aircraft bearing Churchill Roosevelt and the rest of the British and American delegations to the Conference. The boards show wear to extremities and the leather-covered spine is gone. The boards and contents nonetheless remain tenuously connected the mull and overall binding structure quite fragile but still holding. The binding has done its job of preserving the treasure trove within; the contents are generally clean only lightly toned with scattered stains and occasional creasing and appear complete as originally compiled. The contents of the album include the following: - A September 9 1947 typed letter signed by Winston Churchills Private Secretary addressed to Pickard acknowledging that Pickard sent the album to Churchill expressing Churchills thanks and confirming that Churchill inscribed the album which was returned with the letter. - Pickards title page in elaborate multi-hued calligraphy: The Story of 150 Staging Post and the Airlift to the Yalta Conference February 1945. - Personnel list of those under the command of Group Captain W. J. Pickard. - 10 typed pages marked SECRET comprising Pickards detailed REPORT ON OPERATION ARGONAUT dated 26th February 1945 and signed by Pickard. - Five letters of appreciation from senior military commanders including letters signed by U.S. Brigadier General James S. Stowell and General Lord Hastings Lionel "Pug" Ismay. - TOP SECRET CYPHER MESSAGE of 24th JANUARY from 150 STAGING POST to TRANSPORT COMMAND that according to Pickards elaborate calligraphy annotation nearly stopped the Conference. - 50 photographs from the conference 13 featuring Churchill Roosevelt or both. - Seven currency notes including Soviet American and Greek five signed by a bevy of people including pilots. - A TOP SECRET MOST URGENT typed 1st February 1945 letter signed by Air Commodore Whitney Straight to Group Captain Pickard conveying the Flight Plan and Passenger Lists as well as the fighter escort and other details for transport of VIPs to the Yalta Conference. - The Friday February 16th 1945 farewell dinner menu signed on the blank verso by the members of Pickards command. - Pickards original Yalta Conference passes both British Delegation and Soviet. - A contemporary Observer clipping that specifically refers to this Pickards remarkable autograph book - A 24th January 1945 typed and hand-annotated TOP SECRET CYPHER MESSAGE from Pickard regarding critical communication and transport difficulties preceding the Conference. This album with all of its annotations and embellishments has the look and feel of both military precision and treasured story book the adult manifestation of a seasoned commander and pilot recording his actual experience of every lads dream to fly to dare and to overcome.
