1945rif. 006923Saki Crimea U.S.S.R.: Privately compiled 1945. Album. This singular and compelling Second World War album was painstakingly compiled decorated and annotated by Royal Air Force Group Captain Walter J. Pickard. Full of mementos documents and photographs the album chronicles the staging preparation and flights which conveyed Winston Churchill as well as other British and American delegates to the Yalta Conference in 1945 earning Pickard the accolades of his commanders the appreciation of his Prime Minister and the Order of the British Empire O.B.E. Not least among the albums contents is the dated inscription of Winston S. Churchill and signed correspondence from Churchills private secretary confirming that Churchill personally received examined and inscribed this album and conveying Churchills appreciation to Pickard. The album is 100 numbered pages bound in leather-covered boards with a hand-labeled title Saki affixed diagonally on the front cover. Saki refers to the Crimean airbase built by the Soviets in the 1930s that served as the landing point for the aircraft bearing Churchill Roosevelt and the rest of the British and American delegations to the Conference. The boards show wear to extremities and the leather-covered spine is gone. The boards and contents nonetheless remain tenuously connected the mull and overall binding structure quite fragile but still holding. The binding has done its job of preserving the treasure trove within; the contents are generally clean only lightly toned with scattered stains and occasional creasing and appear complete as originally compiled. The contents of the album include the following: - A September 9 1947 typed letter signed by Winston Churchills Private Secretary addressed to Pickard acknowledging that Pickard sent the album to Churchill expressing Churchills thanks and confirming that Churchill inscribed the album which was returned with the letter. - Pickards title page in elaborate multi-hued calligraphy: The Story of 150 Staging Post and the Airlift to the Yalta Conference February 1945. - Personnel list of those under the command of Group Captain W. J. Pickard. - 10 typed pages marked SECRET comprising Pickards detailed REPORT ON OPERATION ARGONAUT dated 26th February 1945 and signed by Pickard. - Five letters of appreciation from senior military commanders including letters signed by U.S. Brigadier General James S. Stowell and General Lord Hastings Lionel "Pug" Ismay. - TOP SECRET CYPHER MESSAGE of 24th JANUARY from 150 STAGING POST to TRANSPORT COMMAND that according to Pickards elaborate calligraphy annotation nearly stopped the Conference. - 50 photographs from the conference 13 featuring Churchill Roosevelt or both. - Seven currency notes including Soviet American and Greek five signed by a bevy of people including pilots. - A TOP SECRET MOST URGENT typed 1st February 1945 letter signed by Air Commodore Whitney Straight to Group Captain Pickard conveying the Flight Plan and Passenger Lists as well as the fighter escort and other details for transport of VIPs to the Yalta Conference. - The Friday February 16th 1945 farewell dinner menu signed on the blank verso by the members of Pickards command. - Pickards original Yalta Conference passes both British Delegation and Soviet. - A contemporary Observer clipping that specifically refers to this Pickards remarkable autograph book - A 24th January 1945 typed and hand-annotated TOP SECRET CYPHER MESSAGE from Pickard regarding critical communication and transport difficulties preceding the Conference. This album with all of its annotations and embellishments has the look and feel of both military precision and treasured story book the adult manifestation of a seasoned commander and pilot recording his actual experience of every lads dream to fly to dare and to overcome. 1820rif. ST15905London: J. Johnston 1820. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. 233 x 143 mm. 9 1/8 x 5 7/8". iv 2 319 pp. Attractive contemporary purple straight-grain morocco covers with gilt frame in the Romantic style raised bands spine compartments framed in gilt with drawer-handle cornerpieces gilt titling gilt-ruled turn-ins with drawer-handle ornaments at corners green watered silk endleaves all edges gilt. With engraved title page featuring hand-colored vignette and 19 HAND-COLORED ENGRAVED PLATES. Front flyleaf with bookplate of Harald Pedersen and verso of front free endpaper with bibliographical notes in pencil. Abbey "Life" 265; Tooley 434. ◆Spine sunned to maroon bottom corners a bit rubbed frontispiece cropped close at foot with much of the imprint trimmed away otherwise quite a fine copy--the plates in excellent impressions and pleasantly colored without the typical offsetting from these kinds of illustrations and the binding lustrous and with scarcely any wear. With charming illustrations by one or more of the 19th century's leading caricaturists this work is an imitation of the popular "Tour" books of Doctor Syntax featuring a pedantic clergyman and schoolmaster meeting with an onslaught of amusing misfortunes in the course of his wanderings. The original "Tour" published in 1812 was conceived of as a parody of the books of picturesque travels then enjoying a considerable vogue and when it met with a great popular response itself two more tours followed in 1820 and 1821. Even this could not sate the public and a number of imitations of the Syntax books including the present work were issued. There is some disagreement as to whether Thomas Rowlandson 1756-1827 or Isaac Robert Cruikshank 1789-1856 created the illustrations here; as Tooley notes "Both Rowlandson and I. R. Cruikshank are credited with the designs for the plates the balance of opinion favoring Cruikshank but according to the advertisement . . . more than one artist was employed or at least a different engraver to the artist." Either way the amusing illustrations of the follies and faux-pas of the good Doctor Syntax do not disappoint. Aside from being in pleasing condition our copy also stands out for its particularly attractive contemporary binding. J. Johnston unknown books

Férdinand Langlé littérateur dramatist and occasional necromancer focused his literary interests on the nostalgic and the romantic. In 1828 he edited Les Contes du Gay-Sçavoir a witty collection of medieval ballads and fables. The text is printed in Gothic characters and illustrated to imitate the style of medieval manuscript illumination; it is followed by endnotes and a glossary printed in Roman type. The major illustrator of the work Richard Parkes Bonington was an English Romantic landscape painter who also worked in lithography. He was a close and admired friend of painters Eugene Delacroix and Antoine-Jean Gros. Gordon Ray speaking of Bonington says his importance in the development of lithography can hardly be overstated. His designs for Vues pittoresques de lEcosse and Contes des Gay-Sçavoir are by no means negligible. Boningtons career as a lithographer was short but splendid. - Art of the French illus. book pp. 173 & 176. Fine fresh and bright rare colored copy of this nostalgic work on the medieval period. Johannes Sleidanus 1506-66 was born in Schleidan Luxembourg and studied ancient languages and literatures at Liège and Cologne and law and jurisprudence at Paris and Orléans. At Lièges he encountered humanist scholars and developed an interest in Protestant ideas. He went to work for Cardinal du Bellay and was employed in the futile negotiations of the French court to make an alliance with the German Protestants against the Emperor Charles V. In 1542 he settled in Strassbourg. He was in the habit of copying all papers that had any bearing on the Reformation to which he had access and Martin Bucer who had seen his papers suggested that Philip of Hesse appoint him historian of the Reformation giving him a salary and access to all necessary documents. Thus began his great work the first volume of which appeared in 1545. That same year he traveled to England in a French embassy to Henry VIII and there he collected further materials for his work. He later went to Marburg to view the archives of Philip of Hesse. In 1551 he attended the Council of Trent. He finished his history in 1554 despite financial problems. He died in poverty the following year. Printed by Edw. Jones, for Abel Swall...and Henry Bonwicke.. unknown books
