1905réf. 32109Godthaab Greenland ca.1905. Winter Sports of a Greenlandic Family An attractive image showing a family of Greenlanders sledding and skiing down a hill likely produced by Lars Møller Greenland's premier printer or by Møller's youngest son Steffen. The illustration shows a family of seven Greenland natives sledding down a hill while two other youngsters ski alongside with one of the skiers in the process of falling. Other winter sports enthusiasts cavort in the distance and the stark Greenland landscape is ably depicted. Lars Møller an accomplished printer and illustrator was the dominant figure in Greenlandic printing in the last quarter of the 19th century producing much of the printed output in the country. His son Steffen succeeded his father and produced impressive works in his own right including a native language speller from which this illustration may be an example. Worn along left edge small closed tears along top and bottom edges of center fold. Two old soft secondary fold lines. Good. Octavos. xciii 407; vi i 797. 8.5" x 6.25" HISTORY OF NEW FRANCE FOR THE TWENTIETH-CENTURY Fearing early North American history would slip from the minds of twentieth-century Americans librarian Rueben Gold Thwaites undertook the project of republishing critical accounts including Louis-Armand de Lom d'Arce's writings on New France. The Baron de Lahontan 1666-1715 originally traveled to the New World to campaign against the Iroquois on Lake Ontario but quickly took interest in nearby tribes. Widely considered the best seventeenth-century record of the French colonies Lahontan turned European curiosity toward natives as he dedicated the second volume of New Voyages to North-America to exploring their customs. His famous fictional account of the philosophy of "primitive" life fueled Voltaire and Jonathan Swift's own imaginations as the 1703 first edition was translated into English the same year. Thwaites' edition reprints this first English translation expanded to include his new introduction notes and index. Beautifully rebound this copy features international law attorney Charles Cheney Hyde's laid-in bookplate. A. C. McClurg & Co unknown

The biography is arranged chronologically with the years indicated in the margins. He entered the service of Tahmasp the son of Shah Sultan Husayn. Nadir took the name Tahmasp Kuli Khan Tahmasp's slave. He warred against the Turks successfully and when the shah turned victory to disaster by a conciliatory peace Nadir in 1732 deposed him. Tahmasp's infant son Abbas III was placed on the throne with Nadir as regent. In 1736 Nadir deposed Abbas and he himself became shah thus ending the rule of the Safavid dynasty. In 1747 during a campaign against rebellious Kurds Nadir Shah was assassinated by officers of his own guard.
