1930Best.-Nr. 59487New York: Horace Liveright 1930. Second Printing same year as the first. Octavo 21cm; black cloth with titles stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; illustrated endpapers; 1213-3093pp; illus. Inscribed by the author in year of publication the half-title page: "To Erskine and Sara / with never-ceasing affection / Sincerely & fraternally / Michael Gold." Further inscribed by Wood: "From Erskine & Sara to their dear friend Max Rosenberg - echoing the above - The Cats / July 1930." A tight clean copy in the original cloth binding; board corners lightly bumped and a few mild taps to board edges the endpapers illustrated after woodcuts by Howard Simon. Solidly Very Good lacking the scarce dustwrapper. A great association copy inscribed by Gold to one of the leading leftist intellectuals and authors of his time. Wood 1852-1944 was a self-styled anarchist aesthete and painter. As an attorney in the 1920s he defended a number of prominent figures on the left including the anarchist lecturer Emma Goldman and contributed prolifically to the radical periodicals of the period. With his second wife Sara Bard Field he was a long-time resident of Los Gatos California and was known for entertaining visitors at the estate "The Cats" mentioned in the present inscription. Interestingly Wood did not have a reputation for sympathy with doctrinaire Marxist thought; it seems unlikely that Gold would have written Wood such an effusive inscription even a few years later as during the Great Depression he would rise to become one of the leading apparatchiks in the CPUSA. 1946Best.-Nr. 2206008Nampa: Private Correspondence 1946. Soft cover. Very Good. Historian Bird of Nampa Idaho over a period of many years corresponded with rare book dealer Jerome Peltier of Clarks Old Book Store in Spokane. In this clutch of letters and cards 23 in all depending on what you count but a minimum Bird tries to answer questions from Peltier. While much of the content is personal she talks about school teaching - was a high school teacher of history-her cats a few trips and even teaching Sunday School the content discussed some figures of Pacific Northwest History Bird was researching particularly William Wallace who was governor of both Idaho and Washington Territories. Bird is trying to add to the data she is compiling but often comes up on dead ends. A published articles is included in duplicate sent at two different times. There are no letters from Peltier only Bird to Peltier. Most are from 1946-48 but a handful also as late as the 1960s. The letters are original as typed and signed by Bird and have their accompanying mailing envelopes. Peltier corresponded with countless historians and saved everything they sent him it seemed. Now there was a rare book dealer who just soaked up history particular that of the Pacific Northwest. Here is what the Idaho State Archives says of Bird: Annie Laurie Bird was born August 21 1893 in Billings Montana. Bird moved with her parents to Idaho in 1905 where they homesteaded in Owyhee County. The family moved to Caldwell in 1906 and to Nampa in 1918. Annie Bird attended the College of Idaho and Columbia University and was awarded a Doctor of Letters Degree from Northwest Nazarene College in 1970. A teacher in Nampa for 35 years Bird became a regionally-noted historian writer and researcher. She was the author of many books and articles. State newspapers also published her poetry. Annie Laurie Bird died on December 26 1972 in Nampa Idaho. Books by Annie Laurie Bird: Boise The Peace Valley. Atkeson 1907-1990 was one of the finest landscape photographers of the Pacific Northwest and he was widely honored especially in his home of Oregon. Many of his books were elegantly published by Northwest Graphic Arts Center. The photographs in this volume are so finely dotted half-tones that they almost look like as nice as photogravures. Of the twelve images one has a 4 1/2" hairline crease running to the edge of the sheet in the lower corner and this is the only reason we grade this copy down to near fine. A rare and desirable item by a master landscape photographer. This book found in only five libraries four in Oregon and the fifth at Yale. Privately Printed & West Coast Printing & Binding unknown

1925Best.-Nr. 1912074Seattle: John Muir School & Press of The Co-operative Printing Company 1925. First Edition. Soft cover. Good. 1st printing. Printed greenish-gray small 8vo wraps. 71pp. This is a rare little book published by John Muir School in Seattle to honor by way of a pageant the great naturalist. Contents "Leaves of the John Muir Book" consist of following the Acknowledgments: Introduction by Principal Jessie Lockwood. A second introductory page typeset & printed on a sheet slightly smaller than the book's dimensions and tipped in is titled "The Writing of the John Muir Pageant". It is dated March 1928 Foreword Original prose and verse by the pupils inspired by the study and production of the Pageant Quotations from the writings of John Muir and Appreciations of John Muir by different authors. The pageant section lists part episodes music characters. In pencil on the ffep is a four-line inscription "Compliments of / Miss Jessie Lockwood / Prin. John Muir / School. Mar. 1929." We do not know if the handwriting is Ms. Lookwood's. HistoryLinkdotorg says this of the school in part: "A new school opened in 1910. It was named York School after the neighborhood. Residents of the neighborhood petitioned the Seattle School Board in September 1915 to rename the school John L. Wilson. The board chose to delay making any change. In 1921 Principal Jessie Lockwood was asked to select a new name for the school. She chose to honor Scottish-born naturalist John Muir who founded the Sierra Club in 1892 and was instrumental in establishing Yellowstone National Park and the National Park Service. Part of her motivation for selecting Muir was the hope that students would develop a love of nature and a desire to conserve natural beauty." On the back cover is a sizable white residue - not really an embedded stain. It occupies a somewhat small part of the page overall yet is a blemish that detracts. A very small perhaps one-half quarter or more size of the same whitish blemish on the upper fore edge of the front cover. Hinges sound. As noted rare. This book belongs in any serious we believe library on John Muir. John Muir School & Press of The Co-operative Printing Company unknown
1981Best.-Nr. 1912022Portland: Sandy's Camera Shops 1981. Hardcover. Very Good. Original photograph collection. Oblong textured simulated leather decorated hard binder 10 1/2" x 13/34" with 20 metal ring snaps. 1 page double column printed introduction. Laid in: a small plastic container of volcanic ash from Mt. St. Helen's. This is a remarkable collection of 60 color snapshot photographs each approx. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" purportedly taken by Mr. Covert. They are fitted into10 card leaves each side with an opening for three photos. Some photos are snug & in place; others are loose and sliding around a little in their spaces. The photos are not in chronological order although a buyer might be able to arrange them approximately so with not too much effort. These photos were shot many from an airplane flying near the mountain in the days before the May 20 1980 eruption the day of including a handful apparently taken in the first moments! the eruptoin and some after the eruption. Included are also three photographs of the 1979 solar total eclipse seen from Portland. Abundant photographs may be found on-line and in books of the Mt. St. Helen's eruptions but some of these are special in your bookseller's opinion because of the fact that the photographer was in the air near the mountain taking them! Many I have never seen before although surely some were published in various print products. I am not certain if the July eruption may be represented or not in a couple of photos but the vast majority are of the May eruption before during and after. As I your bookseller look at even these snapshot photos I am once again in awe over the power and magnitude of this cataclysmic event. Sandy's shops were well known to regional photographers and customers for many years but it apparently no longer exists. An internet search brings us several references to Mr. Covert. The album is a bright black with three gold-stamped decorative motifs on the front cover & on the spine. The corners have some splitting to the vinyl material & there is a nick on one joint. The photographs are in fine condition and are sharp. Sandy's Camera Shops hardcover
