1887Best.-Nr. xxx043S. F.: History Company 1887. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st printing. Original dark burgundy cloth boards with bright gilt titles on the spine. 792pp. Bibliography. Index. Maps including folding map. Vol 32 of the Works of Bancroft. This is an ex-library copy which is actually in my view collectable. It has a period printed bookplate of the Sage Public Library of West Bay City Michigan on the front paste down given Number Case and Shelf number where it was shelved. On the back paste down is an unusual bordered check out pocket cut in such a fashion to easily slip in the record card from the side and with the "EXTRACT FROM RULES" print on the pocket with the leading statement "Injury of Books subject the Offender to the Penalty of the Law." Yikes! There is a cancellation ink stamp on the pocket and the card. The card had no check outs listed so either the fine folks of Bay City never checked out a copy of if they did these would be a fresh card! Two small library stickers adorn the spine above and below the title. Small edge chip on rear free end paper else a very good sound copy. History Company hardcover
1911Best.-Nr. xxx010Spokane: n.p. 1911. Soft cover. Good. Original cord-tied student-created "tablet" of flower paintings in color and pencil drawings. School "copy work" would be the genre. Tall 6" x 9". The name "Emma" is on some of the leaves. At bottom of the hand-decorated cover is in strong pencil hand "April 28. Alcott School / Miss Slater Teacher / Miss Fern Myers Subt." At the top in bold upper case letters is "SPRING TERM. / 1911." Along the perimeter of the cover is a double line of dashes nicely intersecting at the corners. The twelve leaves are a combination of pencil drawings and beautiful flower paintings. I am uncertain of the medium as it doesn't quite look like watercolor. Most leaves are dated. About Alcott School from Dept of Archeology and Historic Preservation: YESTERDAY: The original Alcott School was first identified as the Carnhope School and was known to be in existence as early as 1893. With the consolidation of the school into the Spokane School District in 1914 the name was changed to Alcott Elementary School in honor of popular children's novelist Louisa May Alcott. In 1949 with student population at a record high surplus war buildings were moved from Geiger Field to the school where they were used to accommodate the growing student population. This school was closed in 1955 due to development of the I90 freeway and a new school was built on Eighth Avenue. The original school building was demolished and a portable auditorium structure was later added to the site of the 1955 eightroom frame structure. TODAY: The school was one of nine elementary schools closed in 1972 due to a levy failure. It was later used for school instructional and administration offices. Today the Instructional Media Center IMC continues to occupy the building which provides space for a textbook depository bookmending services and a film library. A nice little item from an earlier time of education in Washington State not unlike any other state in the early 20th century. Good condition with pages/sheet flexible but should still be considered fragile. n.p. unknown

Binns ingeniously introduces the reader historically and geographically to the whole Puget Sound country before he settles down to the perfect inlet in Puget Sound that provided the birthplace for Seattle . . . His book is filled with action and with all the excitement of a port that was a gateway to the Pacific and to Alaska." A very good copy. Light wear to cover extremities. The front paste down has burning to the edges ½" to 1" in. Same with rear paste down so we surmise it's the glue used when binding. Laid in is portion of Seattle Times page no date showing with article including photo of Binns "Binns Knows His Seattle; Book to Tell of Its Growth." There is another clipping of photo of Binns. The very good dj is price-clipped and very slightly chipped. In my photo of the entire dj the top of the front panel is NOT chipped; reflection of light off protector.
