First edition of one of the three most important early Japanese books on the history and technique of Chinese and Japanese acupuncture. This work is very different from all earlier Chinese and Japanese books on the subject. For the first time the illustrations are finely and realistically rendered and are anatomically accurate clearly influenced by European medical works which had circulated in Japan. Another important aspect of this book is that eighteen of the woodcuts each depicting organs of the body are finely handcolored. Also the body is described in full from head to foot and is not entirely dependent on the fourteen meridians. Kosaka was a court physician of the fiefdom of Kameyama who had studied under the famous physician Motonori Taki 1731-1801 who was himself a member of a distinguished family of doctors. The publisher of this work was the exclusive publisher for the government sponsored medical school. Very good set. unknown
1987rif. 81416New York: Doubleday 1987. First Edition stated presumed first printing. Hardcover. Very good/Good. Dave Valdez Jacket photograph. 26 cm. xii 4 270 pages. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations. Index. Signed on Vice President of the United States bookplate on fep. Below this is a gift inscription not from Bush referencing campaign help. George Herbert Walker Bush June 12 1924 - November 30 2018 was an American politician and businessman who served as the 41st president of the United States from 1989 to 1993. A member of the Republican Party Bush also served as the 43rd vice president from 1981 to 1989 in the U.S. House of Representatives as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and as Director of Central Intelligence. Bush served in the navy during World War II. After the war he graduated from Yale and moved to Texas where he built a successful oil company. He won election to the 7th congressional district in 1966. President Nixon appointed Bush Ambassador to the United Nations in 1971 and as chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1973. In 1974 President Gerald Ford appointed him as the Chief of the Liaison Office to the People's Republic of China and in 1976 Bush became the Director of Central Intelligence. Bush was elected vice president in 1980 and 1984 as Reagan's running mate. In the 1988 presidential election Bush defeated Democrat Michael Dukakis becoming the first incumbent vice president to be elected president since Martin Van Buren in 1836. Bush navigated the final years of the Cold War and played a key role in the reunification of Germany. Bush presided over the invasion of Panama and the Gulf War ending the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait in the latter conflict. Publishers Weekly described this book as an early salvo in the vice-president's campaign for the White House in 1988. It describe it as a standard candidate's biography but livelier than others because Bush has held such a variety of important positions. As a young man from Connecticut and a former Navy pilot in World War II he went to Texas and made a fortune in the oil fields. After serving in the House of Representatives and two failed attempts at the U.S. Senate he served as U.S. representative to the United Nations chairman of the Republican National Committee steering the party through the Watergate scandal envoy to China in the last years of Chairman Mao and head of the CIA. Bush writes about his seven years as vice-president stressing his belief that the prime requisite of the number-two spot is loyalty and concludes by emphasizing his political conservatism. Victor "Vic" Gold September 25 1928 - June 5 2017 was an American journalist author and Republican political consultant. Gold began his career as a lawyer and advisor to the Democratic Party in Alabama before switching to the Republican Party. He worked as deputy press secretary for Senator Barry Goldwater during the 1964 presidential election and press secretary for Vice President Spiro T. Agnew from 1970 to 1973. Gold left politics for a time to work as a writer and political commentator returning in 1979 as a speechwriter to the presidential campaign of George H. W. Bush and was an advisor to Bush's 1988 and 1992 campaigns. He was the author of several published works of non-fiction. He co-wrote George H. W. Bush's 1987 autobiography and co-wrote a novel in 1988 with Lynne Cheney. Doubleday hardcover

Marcia Cohn Spiegel was one of the first to speak out about alcoholism and domestic violence in the Jewish community using her own experience to help others. Spiegel came to two simultaneous realizations that changed the course of her life: the absence of women from Jewish writing and prayer and the fact that her husband was an alcoholic. At the time many in the Jewish community denied Jews could be alcoholics addicts or abusers making it almost impossible to find treatment or support. Spiegel earned a social work degree from the School of Jewish Communal Service at HUC-JIR with her thesis "The Heritage of Noah Alcoholism in the Jewish Community." She has written and spoken extensively on alcoholism domestic abuse addiction and rape and has taught at the University of Judaism UCLA and synagogues throughout the US as well as Russia Ukraine Israel Great Britain and Australia. Having participated in a number of feminist workshops and spiritual groups Spiegel chose to mark her 60th birthday with a Simhat Hokhmah ceremony of wisdom for which her friend songwriter Debbie Friedman wrote her iconic Mi Sheberakh prayer to help Spiegel heal and find renewal. 2002rif. 52160Washington DC: Panel to Assess Reliability 2002. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Very Good. quarto 30 pages wraps footnotes figures appendix. Subtitled: FY2001 Report to Congress of the Panel to Assess the Reliability Safety and Security of the United States Nuclear Stockpile. This report focussed on a narrow question: is there a technical issue that necessitates a return to nuclear testing In order to meet the growing technical challenges of stockpile stewardship the Panel recommended that Presidential guidance be revised to require a balanced and complete assessment of the stockpile the nuclear weapons complex that supports it and the alternative options available for sustaining confidence. The Panel urges Congress to continue its strong focus and leadership particularly in the following four areas: First there is significant potential to strengthen stockpile surveillance assessments and certification. These processes are the day-to-day foundation for understanding and investigating the issues associated with stockpile safety and reliability and they should be as rigorous and probing as the responsible stockpile stewards know how to make them. Congress should encourage the proposed revisions to these processes which are needed to obtain a balanced and complete assessment of stewardship issues and options. Second we need to articulate and fund a balanced forward-looking weapons program that meets the requirements for weapons refurbishments explores advanced concepts and maintains leading-edge capabilities in weapons-relevant science and technology. A renewed and sharpened focus on deliverable products will drive the need to restore the weapons complex to train a new generation of stockpile stewards and to address long-standing management deficiencies. Third test readiness the time required to conduct a test after a decision to test is made must be addressed much more realistically. This is not because a need to test is imminent but because prudence requires that every President have a realistic option to test in a timely manner should technical or political events dictate a requirement. Fourth the coming year will be critical for determining whether the NNSA can provide the strong leadership Congress sought by establishing this organization in 1999. The Secretary of Energy has limited the oversight of NNSA by DOE's environmental safety and health organization. However he should also be urged to do still more to remove staff activities in DOE headquarters that are redundant to functions in NNSA. Such redundant activities inevitably hamper the efficient pursuit of NNSA's mission. NNSA must lead in transforming the weapons program by creating a resource plan that explains how it will address the challenges of stockpile stewardship and in establishing the management capable of executing the plan. If NNSA is unable to accomplish such tasks within the current year Congress should take positive action to further strengthen the mandate and support needed to adequately manage the national nuclear weapons program.
