1480réf. 007085Low Countries 1480. No Binding. Fine. Vellum leaf 187 x 132 mm 20 lines in Gothic textura script. A superb illuminated leaf from a Book of Hours produced in the Low Countries during the late 15th century a period when the workshops of Bruges Ghent and Utrecht were creating some of Europe's most exquisite devotional manuscripts. The text written in a fine dark Gothic textura hand is in Middle Dutch and forms part of a prayer to the Virgin Mary most likely from the Hours of the Virgin or Suffrages. The opening words "Naudige vrouwe dijns heeren soens verdiente te worde." Gracious Lady though the merits of your Son." speak with intimate devotion in the vernacular tongue offering a poignet glimpse into private medieval piety. The leaf is richely adorned with a large historiated initial "D" painted in burnished gold and lapis blue enclosing a minature of a dragon set within a field of gilt tracery. A full bar border extends along the left margin with radiant sprays of acanthus leaves curling tendrils and seed pods in blue green rose and gold a classic feature of Flemish illumination. Red rubrics and alternating red and blue intials punctuate the text. On vellum of fine quality the surface smooth and well-preserved. Ink remains crisp and legible gold retains a soft brilliance. Minor toning and of few small age spots at the outer margins faint cockling along edge. No tears or losses. Middle Dutch Books of Hours are scarcer on the market than their Latin counterparts and leaves with complete borders and historiated intials are particuly desirable. Overall a beautifully preserved and highly decorative leaf suitable for display. Unmatted and unframed unknown

réf. 17260'Reprinted from "The Maritime Review."' No place or date but during the reign of King George V. 2pp. 4to. Printed on the same side of one piece of shiny art paper folded to make a bifolium. Aged and stained with wear and slight loss to extremities. Photograph of Russell beneath title alongside 'Sonnet To W. Clark Russell' reprinted 'From "English Sea Pictures." By Julia D. Young Author of "Barham Beach the President's Poem." - New York.' The author laments that 'in this country it is not the fashion to ennoble those who really do something for their time and generation' such as Russell whose 'stupendous output' consists of 'fifty-seven books everyone sic of them good'. The article concludes: 'Of a surety is such a hero a national asset and the more we think of the subject the greater is our admiration for that skipper of Calcutta who first called our attention to the fact. May the fates be kinder to the stricken writer and may he long be spared to wield his able pen. The nation can better spare many more-advertised and gaudily-decorated patriots than can it Mr. W. Clark Russell - a citizen of the universal world.' No other copy of this offprint traced either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. 'Reprinted from "The Maritime Review."' No place or date (but during the reign of King George V). unknown
réf. 14862Cheney & Sons printers Banbury Oxfordshire. June 1892. Printed on one side of 9 x 13 cm card with rounded corners edged in silver. A tasteful example of Victorian printing by a printer whose calling card boasted of his 'Specialities in the best class of work.' Very good lightly-aged. The word 'Sonnet.' is printed at the head in gothic type the rest being in roman. The poem begins: 'O GREATEST Poet of the living age! For many a year to come thy fame will ring Throughout the land. Grateful to thee I bring A simple tribute writ on simpler page.' Beneath the sonnet to the left is the date 'June 1892.' with 'E. DRAPER' on the right along the same line. At the foot of the page is the following in italic: 'This Sonnet has been kindly received and approved by Lord Tennyson.' A scarce piece of Tennysonian memorabilia with no other copy located either on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. The author is presumably Eleanor Draper who published a number of works in Banbury between 1892 and 1915. The printers' details are not given but the item comes from the archive of Cheney & Sons 'General Commercial & Artistic Printers Banbury'. For more about the firm see 'John Cheney and his descendants printers in Banbury since 1767' 1936 and the Victoria County History volume for the County of Oxford Banbury Hundred.
