1831ref. 14385Newcastle J. Marhsall; 1831. 1831. Broadside approximately 38 x 15.5 cm. Single sheet titled in bold. Edges a little frayed slight toning to top edge. Remarkably crisp and clean for such a cheaply printed and ephemeral document. Broadside which describes a meeting of a "great number" Fynes od an early trade union of miners led by Thomas Hepburn in dispute with their employer over wages fines and rights to housing. Hepburn was a veteran labour organiser whose campaigning had won shorter working days for boys in the North East. The meeting described here was a precursor to a series of meetings between the trade union and the Marquess of Londonderry which was a significant step in the history of trade unionism. The gains made in the 1831 strike were soon overturned in the 1832 strike. Fynes The Miners of Northumberland and Durham pp. 16-20; Outram 'Thomas Hepburn' Society for the Study of Labour History. Two drawings at head of report followed by detailed descriptions of each drawing: boundaries chutes directions of veins projected coal output etc. Old horizontal folds some splits along fold edges a few small chips. Drafted on paper which bears the watermark of "John C. Clark Phila" the oldest legal stationers in the United States founded in 1817 and the 9th oldest continuously operating business in Philadelphia according to its current website. The Peach Mountain mines were situated near Pottsville in the county of Schuylkill Pennsylvania. Peach Mountain was one of several mines in the area which produced red ash anthracite. According to this offering the mine bordered the Delaware Coal Company which was responsible for working it. "Mr. Read thinks that the above coal can be delivered on the bank at $1. per ton. He would contract at that note after the tunnel was driven. The driving of the tunnel would effect a saving of 10c per ton on all the coal lying above the level of the present tunnel. The said 10c per ton are now paid for loading and running to and unloading into the chute of 79 feet whence it is again loaded into drift waggons on the deep level. It would take a year to drive the tunnel at a total cost of about $2500. unknown

1906ref. h42263Mutual PA 1906. Hardcover. Good. 14.25 x 9.5 inches dark maroon cloth good with some wear to corners and spine ends binding a little worn and dusty contents very good. Identified as coming from the Mutual Coal Mine Co. by a small antique dealer's price tag and with "Mutual" in pencil on first page but we could be all wrong about this: on p. 277 there is a transaction for H. C. Frick Coal Co. in Mutual for 49 gallons of sperm oil so we don't really know what to think. The Mutual Coal Company was a subsidiary of the H. C. Frick Coal and Coke Company based in Mutual PA south of Greensburg and east of Youngwood. The mines closed in 1923 but in its heyday the company both mined and refined coal and had over 200 beehive coke ovens in operation. The ledger is from 1901-1906 and details the supplies needed to run the company with purchases for a wide variety of products -- building materials bricks straw tools machinery lumber even sperm whale oil for the miners' lamps etc. purchased from some major western Pennsylvania firms including much from the Carnegie Steel Company National Tube Works Lemont Brick Works Oil Well Supply Co. Joseph Woodwell Co Vulcan Iron Works American Mine Door Co. Harbison Walker Standard Supply & Equipment Co. Oliver Iron & Steel Co. American Lime and Stone Co. Baldwin Locomotive Works near Philadelphiaas well as various companies in Scottsdale Connellsville Greensburg etc. More research from someone who knows what they're doing can probably yield more information about where this ledger comes from and what it represents but it's an excellent look at the economics of running coal and coke operations back then. hardcover
