Fine touch of offsetting to the endpapers. In very good dust jacket with rubbing to the edges and a coprner stain upper rear panel. One of the cornerstone sports related books of the 20th century the autobiography of boxing great Rocky Graziano 1919-1990. Born Thomas Rocco Barbella in Brooklyn his father was a boxer with a brief fighting record under the name Fighting Nick Bob. The family moved to Manhattan's East Village neighborhood where Rocky was a tough and tumble street fighter who spent years in reform school jail and Catholic protectories. Graziano won some Manhattan amateur boxing competitions. He continued to find trouble with the law; in 1940 he was sent to an upstate New York correctional facility his friend Jake LaMotta was there as well. Joining the Army after his release he would up in trouble again after punching a captain and going AWOL. It was at this time that he adopted the name Rocky Graziano and resumed boxing but the Army caught up with him and sent hin to Leavenworth. After his release he resumed his career becoming a formidable middleweight prizefighter and by 1945 "Ring" magazine was calling him "the next Joe Louis". In 1947-48 he won then lost the middleweight crown to Tony Zale; Rocky fought Sugar Ral Robinson in 1948 narrowly losing the championship bout. After his retiremen he became a televison regular co-starring on The Martha Raye Show Miami Undercover appearances on I've got A Secret The Pat Boone Show Car 54 Where Are You Naked City and in the 1967 film Tony Rome. "Somebody Up There Likes Me" was the basis for the 1956 movie of the same name starring Paul Newman James Dean was originally cast to play Graziano but died before filming began. 1955réf. 10811955 Simon and Schuster first edition first printing. Inscribed to sportswriter Red Smith by Rocky on the front free endpaper 'To Red Smith - a real guy'. Walter "Red" Smith was one of the most admired sportswriters of the 20th Century. Smith and Graziano were well acquainted. Ira Berkow's biography of Smith notes that the two men were occasional dinner companions with Smith regularly picking up the tab. Smith was also one of the strongest defenders of Graziano during Rocky's suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission. The book was acquired from the estate of journalist Harry Rosenfeld who was a colleague of Smith's at the New York Herald Tribune. Condition of the book is Good only. The binding is straight and sound. Inside pages are complete and unmarked. The main condition issue is old damp exposure. The bottom edge of the boards shows some loss of paper and discoloration. The spine cloth has some residual stiffness and the text block is also slightly stiff. See the listing photos. Condition of the dust jacket is Good. The DJ is complete not price clipped. It shows moderate shelf wear and edge wear. The DJ is protected in a new mylar cover. In sum a collectible and unique copy of this book that is in less than optimal condition.
