He lives with a Wise Woman at the top of a hill at the foot of which live a farmer his wife and their only child Carrie. Seeing some danger coming towards the girl the Wise Woman gives Catkin to her as a guardian - and the two love each other dearly. But one day while Carrie sleeps in the bushes and Catkin chases a butterfly the Little People come out from their home inside the hill and take the child leaving a changeling in her place. Only Catkin can rescue her. He must go into the land of the Little People and win her back from their Lord and Lady whose riddles and powers of enchantment will test his courage and cleverness to the full. 'Catkin' has the richness and resonance of a favourite fairy tale. Enchantingly written by the author of 'The Mousehole Cat' - see my book ID rja368110 - it is illustrated with dazzling skill beauty and imagination by J. P. Lynch. Antonia Barber has written many books for children including 'The Mousehole Cat' which was the Smarties Book Prize children's choice. It was also commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal and won the British Book Award as Illustrated Children's Book of the Year. It has now been dramatized as an animated film. She has twice been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal - for 'Ghosts' later turned into the popular film 'The Amazing Mr Blunden' and 'The Ring in the Rough Stuff'. Patrick James Lynch born 2 March 1962 Belfast grew up in 'The Troubles' known professionally as P. J. Lynch is an Irish artist and illustrator of children's books. Attended Brighton College of Art and on leaving in 1984 he began working on children's books. His first illustrated book Alan Garner's 'A Bag of Moonshine' - a collection of folklore tales from England and Wales - won him the 1987 Mother Goose Award. Since then folklore - traditional stories legends and fairy tales - has been a recurring subject of his work. He has also won the Kate Greenaway Medal for 1995 and 1997. 'The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey' by Susan Wojciechowski published by Walker Books in 1995 proved to be very popular in the US with sales in excess of 1 million copies. It also won the Christopher Medal and a movie based on the book was released in 2007. He won his second Greenaway Medal two years later for illustrating 'When Jessie Came Across the Sea' by Amy Hest London Walker Books 1997. As well as a children's book illustrator J. P. Lynch has created posters for both Opera Ireland and the Abbey Theatre Dublin. He has also illustrated four sets of Christmas stampsas well as other individual stamps. In 2006 Lynch completed work on two large scale murals in oils on the theme of Gulliver's Travels for the Cavan County Library.
