"This Book contains the ancient form of the Consecration of the Kings of England and also Extracts from the earliest Anglo-Saxon laws which shew the spirit of those ages when the Service was first adopted and the circumstances under which the three Estates of the Realm and the rights vested in the Crown derive their origin. It is asserted that this Consecration of our Kings in their Coronations establishes a contract between God the King and the people. In this religious ceremony may be found that covenant which Locke Rousseau and similar writers have declared ought to exist in order to constitute a lawful government; but which Paley and many other authors assert cannot in any case be discovered. This system of Government arose in this country together with the Christian faith and must necessarily end with its rejection" Advertisement. 16881st edition thus [2nd edition, expanded from the first] Bound in 18th Century, full leather, retaining what appear to be the 17th Century spines. In custom clamshell box. 8vo, Volume 1:[4]+[19]+160 pages; Volume 2: pages 161-315 +12+[32] pages. Beautiful engraved Illustrations of coins and medals throughout, many foldout. In French. Title translates as Metalic History of the Republic of Holland. New Edition Augmented by 140 Medals. Graesse I, 433. Lipsius / LS 47. The Bourbon historian and scholar Pierre Bizot (1630-1696) was one of the first authors to take an interest in modern numismatics. The author also proposed to reconstruct the history of the Netherlands based on the production and description of the medals. Metal production in the Netherlands from 1566 to 1680 is described with a great luxury with both numismatic and historical information. The book of Bizot had been printed for the first time in Paris in 1687 in folio format. In this second edition in smaller format, the first two volumes reproduce the text of Bizot. However the editor there has inserted several additions and had many plates engraved again, that were engraved in reverse in the first edition issued a year earlier in 1687. Includes Remarques sur Ledition De Paris De la Republique de Hollande de Mr. Bizot at the end of the 2nd volume. A supplement was published over a decade later. Paper and internal binding excellent with only light toning, no tears, Very Good Condition. (AC-21-18)
