Limitation page hand-numbered No. 37/100. Book housed in its matching publisher's slipcase with b/w photographic reproduction pasted onto front cover. Completed in 1936 in Palestine where Swiss Avant-Garde portrait photographer Helmar Lerski had immigrated in 1932 "Metamorphosis through Light" is a stunning 'tour de force' in which Lerski carried his talent to extremes. With the help of up to 16 mirrors and filters he directed the natural light of the sun in constant new variations and refractions onto his model the Bernese-born at the time out-of-work draughtsman and light athlete Leo Uschatz. Thus he achieved in a series of over 140 close-ups "hundreds of different faces including that of a hero a prophet a peasant a dying soldier an old woman and a monk from one single original face" Siegfried Kracauer in "Theory of Film" Oxford University Press 1960 p. 162. According to Lerski these pictures were intended to provide proof "that the lens does not have to be objective that the photographer can with the help of light work freely characterize freely according to his inner face." Laid in at rear inside a white envelope is a splendid silver gelatin print 10 3/4 x 8 1/2" produced by German photographer André Gelpke from Helmar Lerski's original plate. The print depicts a close-up portrait of Leo Uschatz not featured in the book. The verso has been hand-captioned numbered and signed by Gelpke. One of 100 copies of which this is No. 37. Minor shelf wear and sporadic fraying along edges of slipcase. Head of spine slightly bumped not affecting pages throughout. Text in German and English. Slipcase in overall good binding in good to very good interior and silver gelating print in very good condition. About the author: Helmar Lerski 1871-1956 was born in Strasburg then part of the German empire as Israel Schmuklerski. His parents were Jewish immigrants of Polish origin. In 1876 the family moved to Zurich Switzerland where they obtained Swiss citizenship. Lerski moved to New York in 1893 at the age of twenty-two to work as an actor changing his name in 1896. He spent several years with a German theatre company in Chicago and Milwaukee where he met his first wife a photographer. In 1911 Lerski began to experiment with photography by adapting dramatic stage lighting techniques to portrait photographs of fellow actors. In 1912 Lerski was encouraged to pursue a career in photography by Rudolph Dührkoop who had come to St. Louis to demonstrate his photographic techniques. In 1914/15 he taught German language and literature at the University of Texas in Austin. In 1915 after more than twenty years in America Lerski moved to Berlin and after showing his portraits was asked to become a cameraman at the UFA studios where he worked as a cameraman and expert for special effects for many films including Fritz Lang's movie Metropolis 1927. Lang wanted to insert the actors into shots of miniatures of skyscrapers and other buildings so Lerski used specially made mirrors to create the illusion of actors interacting with huge realistic-looking sets. With fascism on the rise Lerski immigrated to Palestine where he worked as a director and cameraman for documentary films. After the war Lerski moved back to Zurich where he spent the rest of his life. Luca Verlag hardcover books

Abbey Scenery 212; Tooley 7. Joints and extremities slightly rubbed but the bindings still splendid despite their signs of use and looking magnificent on the shelf. Offsetting from plates onto facing page as usual with this book about a fourth of the plates with significant transfer another fourth with none or almost none the remaining half with something in between but the plates with lovely rich coloring and with no offsetting of the text onto plate images and the text printed within spacious margins very fresh and unsoiled. Deemed by Abbey "a colour-plate book of great importance" Ackermann's pictorial tour of London is offered here in elegant bindings by an important English workshop. According to Tooley this is "one of the great colour-plate books" that "should form the corner stone of any collection of books on this subject. The plates by Rowlandson and Pugin present an unrivalled picture of London in early 19th century" and are consequently "of historic value as many of the buildings no longer exist." DNB calls "Microcosm" "an acknowledged masterpiece" the success of which led to Ackermann's volumes on Westminster Abbey and the colleges at Oxford Cambridge and Winchester a series considered "among the most beautiful illustrated books of the first half of the nineteenth century." Artist Thomas Rowlandson 1756-1827 is remembered for his caricatures and humorous illustrations but he made his name illustrating the travel books with views he would later satirize in his "Doctor Syntax" volumes. According to DNB publisher Rudolph Ackermann "kept Rowlandson in almost continuous employment producing drawings for the fine colour-plate books for which his firm the Repository of Arts at 101 Strand became famous. . . . Augustus Pugin was brought in to draw the architecture" for the present work while Rowlandson supplied the figures. Our binder Riviere is one of the foremost names in the field partly because the firm did consistently fine work and partly because it was so long in business. Robert Riviere began as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829 then set up shop as a binder in London in 1840; in 1881 he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son and the bindery continued to do business until 1939. The present set is an excellent example of the firm's work and the bindings along with the richness of the plates and the capacious margins here make this an especially appealing copy. The early watermark dates of 1806 and 1807 are a further attractive feature as they suggest strong coloring on plate surfaces that have not suffered significant degradation. R. 1934ref. List28131New York City: ACME Newspictures 1934. Photograph measuring 8 ⅛ x 6 ¼ inches. With caption date stamp manuscript and later sticker verso. With cracking across image not affecting visibility; very good plus. A press photo of the cabin at Matchless Mine in Leadville Colorado where the body of Baby Doe Tabor was found. Tabor had lived destitute in the mining shack for nearly three decades and had frozen to death after a heavy snowstorm. Her life before that however had been legendary. Tabor born Elizabeth McCourt 1854-1935 grew up in poverty but came to be one of the wealthiest women in the mining West known for her looks and expensive dress. Her second husband was "Silver King" Horace Tabor a prospector businessman and politician who was nearly thirty years her senior. The couple lived in luxury in Denver from their marriage in 1883 until 1893 when the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act collapsed the silver market and caused the Panic of 1893 and their fortune was lost. Horace Tabor died a few years later and Baby shortly moved into the shack at Matchless Mine which had previously belonged to her husband. The rise and fall of the Tabors inspired the 1932 movie Silver Dollar and 1956 opera The Ballad of Baby Doe. ACME Newspictures unknown books

See Peter Thorold "The British in France: Visitors and Residents since the Revolution" p. 64. A very small ink spot just intruding on very bottom edge of a handful of leaves a few vague spots of foxing to map isolated faint offsetting from illustrations but A VERY FINE COPY in all other ways--the text clean fresh and bright the plates immaculate the margins spacious the binding lustrous and sparkling. This is a lovely copy of a work with plates Prideaux considers "among the most beautiful to be found in aquatint engraving" and it comes in a handsome binding commissioned by Mildred Benson Davey and later owned by Paul Chevalier. Issued by a publisher known for his lavishly illustrated travelogues the volume takes us on a journey through the scenic French Pyrenees escorted by Englishman Joseph Hardy who adds his insights on the local population and government gives recommendations on the best mineral baths and describes in word and image the breathtaking scenery. The views are small measuring approximately 90 x 70 mm. but as Abbey notes "part of their charm is certainly in their small size." Sarah Prideaux praised their composition: "The ground is exceedingly fine and there is no line whatever. The colouring is most delicate and all the twenty-four illustrations are exquisite." We can only be impressed by the achievement of the colorist; the detail is cleanly executed the colors are luminescent and the images do not disappoint even under magnification. Thorold notes that this work was "a great success" and was later translated into French. Our copy was bound in a bold modern design at the Chicago workshop founded by in 1926 by John Cuneo 1884-1977. Cuneo hired fine British craftsmen like the Englishman Leonard Mounteney to create bibliophile-quality bindings for American collectors. After apprenticing at the bindery of G. & J. Abbott in Nottingham and studying ornamental design at the Battersea Polytechnic Mounteney worked as an exhibition finisher for Riviere before emigrating to Chicago where he initially worked with Alfred de Sauty at the R. R. Donnelley bindery before joining Cuneo's hand bindery. The present binding was a commission for Mildred Benson Davey 1890-1953 daughter of the founder of Benson & Rixon men’s clothiers. Cuneo also bound books for Chicago retail magnate Marshall Fields. Later our binding was appreciated by distinguished connoisseur Paul Chevalier whose library of beautiful volumes was uniformly characterized by outstanding workmanship and superb condition. The sale of his books in 1990 represented one of the best collections of 20th century bindings brought to auction in the past half century. Laid in is Christie's slip from Chevalier's 9 November sale where this appeared as lot 23 selling for $935. R. Ackermann unknown books

Spines faintly sunned two leaves with minor thumbing one corner crease otherwise AN EXTREMELY FINE SET the very appealing bindings quite lustrous and entirely sound and the text and plates clean fresh and bright with virtually no signs of use. This is a collection of butterfly and moth illustrations printed by direct transfer from the insects the creation of a leading innovator in the display of lepidoteral specimens. Sherman Foote Denton 1854-1937 came from a family of amateur naturalists who managed to turn their favorite pastime into a global business. Denton patented a butterfly mount that captured a specimen on a white plaster tablet where it could be pressed under glass avoiding the mess smell and eventual degradation of butterflies and moths mounted on paper using pins. The present publication presents a collection of specimens in a far more portable form that still preserves the color and detail of the insects' wings. The author collected by his own count more than 50000 specimens to produce the color plates for this limited edition. He explained his process: "The colored plates or Nature Prints used in the work are direct transfers from the insects themselves; that is to say the scales of the wings of the insects are transferred to the paper while the bodies are printed from engraving and afterward colored by hand." Since each specimen could be used only once it was necessary to obtain 500 perfect specimens of each species pictured. The effort and expense prevented larger runs of such publications and Reese observes that "new methods of printing color often too difficult to be practical were sometimes undertaken by enthusiasts.". ref. 167124N.p.: N.p. 1971. Vintage script for the 1971 Broadway play. Working copy belonging to actor Ted Schwartz who served as the replacement for the roles of Ernie and the interviewer and as the understudy for the lead role of Lenny Bruce. Script annotated on every page in at least two hands indicating shared use by multiple performers-a common practice in theatrical circles. In 1969 Julian Barry was hired by Columbia Pictures to write an original screenplay about the life of Lenny Bruce. The prospects for the project were dulled significantly by the commercial success of "Love Story" which had created a temporary demand for romantic films which "Lenny" certainly was not. Barry suggested to theatre director Tom O'Horgan fresh off his success with the musical "Hair" that his screenplay be redone as a play. The play starring Cliff Gorman premiered at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York City on May 10 1971 running for 469 performances and earning a Best Actor Tony Award for Gorman. Barry would go on to readapt the play for the 1974 film directed by Mike Nichols and starring Dustin Hoffman receiving an Academy Award nomination in the process.
