AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, OF 19TH-CENTURY DEPICTIONS OF PYRENEAN SCENERY, executed in lithography (often hand-colored), aquatint, and engraving. ***(1) An unusually fine set of Melling's large folio "Voyage pittoresque dans les Pyrenees francais" (1826-1830), complete with 72 delicate aquatints, a map, a lithographed portrait of the artist, and the text by Cervini. Attractively bound and with clean, unfoxed plates (most unusual for this book). ***(2) TWO fine sets of Victor Petit's folio "Souvenirs des Pyrenees", with about 50 lithographs per set. The first set is beautifully hand-colored on fine wove paper; the second set uncolored on chine. As usual with these albums, the sets offer interesting bibliographical differences. ***(3) Two beautiful sets (30 lithographs per set) of Petit's folio "Bagneres de Luchon et ses environs", one colored and one uncolored on chine. ***(4) Two excellent (and different) complete sets of Ciceri's "Les Pyrenees dessinees d'apres nature", both very fresh, in their original bindings. ***(5) Two copies (one colored, one uncolored) of "Alpes et Pyrenees" (1842), both in publisher's cloth. ***(6) Several additional albums by Gorse (two, one with rectangular lithographs and one with oval), Allom, and others, including a few miniature albums. Les accoudoirs sont sculptés en forme de seringues à clystère, et le dossier est marqué du mongramme de Louis-Philippe (« LP » entrecroisés). Au-dessus du dossier est posé une couronne surmontée d’un lampadaire tenu par Soult et Guizot ( ?). Derrière le trône se trouve un monumental arc de triomphe portant le nom des deux villes accueillantes (« EVREUX. » et « LISIEUX. »). Une frise décorative est composée d’une fleur de lys, d’une seringue à clystère, d’une poire entourée de fleur de lys et d’un coq. Dessous, un bas-relief d’un parapluie croisant une arme, et par-dessus un chapeau portant la cocarde tricolore. Dessous, une poignée de mains. Sur la base de l’arc, un motif de coffre fermé d’un cadenas, et en dessous, des sacs d’écus (« 1,000. »). Devant l’arc de triomphe, au premier plan, Viennet chevauchant un âne. Il tient une lyre en forme de poire entre les mains, porte une redingote dont le dos est marqué de l’inscription « IMPOPULARITE // MEPRIS ». Derrière lui, sur la selle est accroché un rouleau de son « EPÎTRE » surmonté d’un livre. Enfin, une petite plume d’écrivain est accrochée à sa chaussure. Tous ces éléments sont une référence à son ouvrage Epître aux mules de Don Miguel. Au second plan, des membres de la population acclament le roi : « les Constituées et les tamerlans, jusqu’aux femmes idolâtres de la royauté qu’elles ont élevé sur le pavois. » (des femmes vêtues en habit traditionnel). Au centre, au premier plan, des militaires se tiennent bien droit et portent leurs fusils devant eux. L’un, petit, tient un sabre sur le côté. Un autre, grand et peu élégant, derrière le groupe, tient le drapeau tricolore. De Franse Revolutie (1789) leidde niet enkel tot het verdwijnen van de adellijke titels maar ze betekende ook het einde van de grote traditie van de Franse juweelkunst. De externe tekenen van rijkdom symboliseerden de monarchie, het hof en de aristocratische status en maakten op geen enkele manier deel uit van de revolutionaire idealen. Enkel al het bezitten van juwelen kon iemand naar de guillotine brengen. Onder het Directoire bleef soberheid de regel. Er ontstond een mode van militaire decoraties, ringen, broches en ijzeren armbanden, versierd met patriottische slogans en portretten van de helden van de revolutie. Onder het bewind van Napoleon (1799-1814) bloeide de sierkunst weer op en juwelen werden opnieuw aan het hof geintroduceerd. Napoleon had een zwak voor juwelen. Grote juweelhuizen zoals Nitot beleefden toen hun glorietijd. Juwelen en kleding hadden verschillende doelstellingen. Het waren politieke en diplomatieke instrumenten om vriend en vijand aan het keizerrijk te hechten, maar ze deden ook dienst als propaganda voor de grandeur van het keizerrijk en symboliseerden de macht van de keizer. Onder Napoleon kwam de empirestijl volop tot bloei. Toch is 'Napoleonstijl' niet volledig hetzelfde als 'empirestijl'. De kennis van de empirestijl maakt niettemin een beter begrip mogelijk van een hele reeks juwelen en hun zichtbare en/of symbolische betekenis.
