1902rif. 148841902. Loeffler A. Original 1902 photograph of the Park Row Building documenting one of Lower Manhattan's defining early skyscrapers only a few years after its completion. Rising above the surrounding streets and commercial buildings the tower records the vertical transformation of New York at the turn of the twentieth century and the concentration of new high-rise construction around City Hall and Park Row. Vintage black and white photograph copyrighted 1902 by A. Loeffler measuring 7 x 9.5 inches. The Park Row Building dominates the composition above the active city streets below preserving both the structure's scale and its relationship to the surrounding urban fabric. The verso is marked "Charles L. Ritsmann 228 Fifth Avenue Between 26th and 27th Sts. NY" providing a contemporary commercial ownership or distribution mark. Completed in 1899 the Park Row Building was among the tallest office buildings of its period and became an early landmark of New York's developing skyscraper skyline. Loeffler's 1902 image records the building within its original urban setting before the larger towers of the following decades altered the scale of Lower Manhattan. 1926rif. 148811926. Underhill Irving. Original 1926 photograph of the Farmers' Loan and Trust Building in New York City recording the scale of a recently completed Fifth Avenue office tower within the traffic and streetscape of midtown Manhattan. The building now known as 475 Fifth Avenue was completed in 1925; Underhill's photograph therefore dates from the year immediately following its completion and preserves its early appearance within the rapidly changing commercial architecture of 1920s New York. Original vintage black and white photograph approximately 13 x 11 inches. The image emphasizes the height and massing of the Farmers' Loan and Trust Building while also showing automobiles and street traffic below placing the skyscraper within the everyday circulation of the city. A notation in the lower left corner reads: "Farmer's Loan Trust Bldg. 5AY & 415tC17650. Copyright 1926 by Irving Underhill NY." The large format allows both the architectural façade and surrounding street activity to remain legible. Underhill specialized in commercial and architectural photography of New York and this image records the city during the interwar building boom that was reshaping Fifth Avenue and the Manhattan skyline. The juxtaposition of the tower with contemporary automobiles and street traffic provides a dated visual record of urban development only a year after the building's completion. In very good condition. unknown books
1916rif. 148831916. Original gelatin silver print dated March 20 1916 documenting Seventh Avenue between 40th and 41st Streets in Manhattan during the transition from horse-drawn and streetcar transportation to increasingly common automobile traffic. The image records the Hermitage Hotel the Broadway Theatre associated with Paramount Pictures surrounding commercial buildings and the condition of the street surface placing architectural and transportation history within a precisely identified municipal streetscape. Gelatin silver print black and white measuring 7.5 x 9.5 inches. The date "3-20-1916" appears along the bottom edge. A vintage tag identifies the location and camera position: "Location - 7th Ave 40-41Sts. Camera at Sta 27602 15' W of center line. View - Facing north showing condition of street surface." Automobiles and streetcars occupy the roadway while the Hermitage Hotel and Broadway Theatre provide fixed architectural reference points for the view. The combination of exact location data camera station direction of view and stated purpose indicates that the photograph was made as a survey record of street conditions rather than as a general city view. Its detailed documentation of roadway use commercial architecture and transit traffic provides a dated record of Midtown Manhattan in 1916. Very minor chipping to the edges; overall very good condition. unknown books

1890rif. 93665New York: McLoughlin Bro's 1890. Unbound. Original vintage puzzle. 49 colored cardboard pieces in original box approximately 13 x 8.75". The puzzle put together measures approximately 19.5 x 11.75". Missing one piece otherwise in fine condition in the original box which has very minor wear. Nineteenth century puzzles were cut by hand from solid wood or a thin veneer on press board with coping saws treadle scroll saws and if the material was thin enough by slicing with a very sharp knife. The limitations of materials and equipment kept the pieces large the knobs if any large and the cutting simple usually straight or crooked lines. The market was primarily for children as learning tools maps tables of monarchs history morality lessons bible proverbs fables and by the second half of the nineteenth century simple family entertainment national achievements technology. McLoughlin Brothers a leading lithographer in New York City cut many of their prints into simple puzzles using large square knob cut for edges to hold the puzzle together with straight line cut pieces for the interior. This puzzle exemplifies this particular style with the knobby pieces making up the borders and with plain square cut pieces making up the middle. McLoughlin Bro's unknown books

rif. 64479Handwritten letter on 4 pages measuring 5 1/2 x 8 1/2". With the letterhead "Hotel Utah Salt Lake City Under the Management of Geo. O. Relf." The letter is dated February 19 1913. The author writes: "Dear Sir "Complying with your request as regards attempted Bank Burglaries in this Territory. The last one occurred about one month ago. At Tremonton the “State Bank of Tremonton” This is a small town 25 miles north of Ogden. The bank had just located a new building and was ready to move in. They were using an old plate safe. But we sold them a new Manganese. The new safe was in the vault of the new bank while the old safe remained in the old building and vault. The bank had acknowledged they would move on Monday. On Sunday night the Burglers sic entered the old Bank and blew the old safe. But the Saturday evening previous the Cashier had transferred all the money to the new safe. So the yeggmen did not secure a cent and all the damage they did was to put the old safe out of use. The only other attempts I know of in the past six months was on a bank at Midvale Ut. and Murray Ut both small town south of Salt Lake about 15 and 25 miles. In both cases all they did was to punch the lock off the vault door. There was no attempt on either safe and the yeggs got nothing. "I presume you have heard of the First National at St. Anthony being entirely burned out as also the Commercial Bank at Burley Id. "Yours very truly " A letter with interesting content describing early twentieth century attempts at breaking open safes in small Utah towns which leave the yeggmen empty handed in the end. The letter is addressed to Mr. W. G. Norris of Seattle WA. William G. Norris was president of Norris Safe & Locke Co. which was a seller of safes. In 1904 the business occupied one of the first-floor storefronts of the Estabrook building at 1336 2nd Avenue. Perhaps Mr. Norris had queried the author of the letter as to how his safes were withstanding the occasional burglaries of the times. unknown books
