1902réf. 148841902. Loeffler A. Original 1902 photograph of the Park Row Building documenting one of Lower Manhattan's defining early skyscrapers only a few years after its completion. Rising above the surrounding streets and commercial buildings the tower records the vertical transformation of New York at the turn of the twentieth century and the concentration of new high-rise construction around City Hall and Park Row. Vintage black and white photograph copyrighted 1902 by A. Loeffler measuring 7 x 9.5 inches. The Park Row Building dominates the composition above the active city streets below preserving both the structure's scale and its relationship to the surrounding urban fabric. The verso is marked "Charles L. Ritsmann 228 Fifth Avenue Between 26th and 27th Sts. NY" providing a contemporary commercial ownership or distribution mark. Completed in 1899 the Park Row Building was among the tallest office buildings of its period and became an early landmark of New York's developing skyscraper skyline. Loeffler's 1902 image records the building within its original urban setting before the larger towers of the following decades altered the scale of Lower Manhattan. In very good condition. unknown
1890réf. 93665New York: McLoughlin Bro's 1890. Unbound. Original vintage puzzle. 49 colored cardboard pieces in original box approximately 13 x 8.75". The puzzle put together measures approximately 19.5 x 11.75". Missing one piece otherwise in fine condition in the original box which has very minor wear. Nineteenth century puzzles were cut by hand from solid wood or a thin veneer on press board with coping saws treadle scroll saws and if the material was thin enough by slicing with a very sharp knife. The limitations of materials and equipment kept the pieces large the knobs if any large and the cutting simple usually straight or crooked lines. The market was primarily for children as learning tools maps tables of monarchs history morality lessons bible proverbs fables and by the second half of the nineteenth century simple family entertainment national achievements technology. McLoughlin Brothers a leading lithographer in New York City cut many of their prints into simple puzzles using large square knob cut for edges to hold the puzzle together with straight line cut pieces for the interior. This puzzle exemplifies this particular style with the knobby pieces making up the borders and with plain square cut pieces making up the middle. McLoughlin Bro's unknown

2009réf. SKU2010026287PDNB Gallery 2009. First edition. Softcover. Like New. 0x0x0. An exhibition catalog. In Near Fine to Fine condition. Photographers included in the exhibition are: John Albok Mario Algaze Morries Engel Walker Evans Alfbert Freeman Lewis Wickes Hine Russell Lee Ruth Orkin Edwin Rosskam V.G. Schreck Aaron Siskind Roger Smith John Tarbell. Quite scarce in any condition. Gallery Director Burt Finger has collected these works of functional sculpture the last eight years. It all started with a gift of a shoe shine box given as a special piece of folk art by a friend. The collection of photographs with the same subject became an integral part of the compilation as well. Many stories of successful entrepreneurs started at a young age with the start-up shoe shine business. This narrative of a young man's first plunge into commerce offers a nostalgic look into our own youthful dreams of making our own money. However most of these photographs were taken in the Great Depression when shine boys worked hard to help support their families. Most of the photographs in the show were taken in New York City. Young boys and men lined the streets looking for their next customer. Ruth Orkin's charming suite of five photographs illustrates an aggressive young salesman almost grabbing his clients from a busy street in Manhattan. Everyone had shoes that needed to be shined his motive was to let them know he offered the best shine. John Albok's photograph Shine Please! was made in his tailor shop on Madison Avenue in 1936. The gentleman shoe shine man dressed in a double breasted sport coat and elegant hat evocative of the time would stop by every so often to shine Mr. Albok's shoes. He is pictured carrying a traditional wooden shoe shine box with a cast iron foot rest emblazoned with a star. In the background are several of Mr. Albok's framed photographs. The shoe boxes from this collection are from different parts of the world. Some have their original tools brushes polish etc. Each required the same features. The box had to be small enough to carry but big enough to top with a man-sized shoe rest. They also needed storage big enough to carry all the tools either in drawers or an empty space below the shoe rest. PDNB Gallery paperback
