1970Best.-Nr. 16443JCulver City: Metro-Golwyn-Mayer Studios 1970s. The original "Myrna Loy Building" metal sign from the M.G.M. Hollywood Studio lot. In the 1970s the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio started naming various buildings after their classic film stars. Myrna Loy was alive and well at the time of the naming of her building. This sign was acquired by a gentleman who worked as a carpenter on the lot for many years. His accompanying letter reads: During the middle 1980's 85 to 89 I Michael McGovern worked at the old M.G.M. lot Studios in Culver City California in the Permanent Construction Dept. The lot was sold several times in this time frame. At one point before the now Sony Studios it was owned and named Lorimar Telepictues. When the lot was Lorimar Telepictures they were painting and changing the M.G.M. lot to the new Lorimar "look." Thus the signs Blue and Gold naming the building after the old M.G.M. stars were taken down and replaced with the new signs brown and white that matched the Lorimar colors. I asked my boss if it was OK to keep the signs I changed and he said it was fine with him. Myrna Loy is best known for her portrayal of "Nora Charles" in six Thin Man films with William Powell of the 1930s but also starred in Manhattan Melodrama Libeled Lady Test Pilot The Best Years of our Lives Cheaper by the Dozen and From the Terrace. Her film career spanned more than 50 years Accompanied by a copy of Mr. McGovern's "Prop Maker" ID card. The sign measures 18 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and presents with some obvious wear from the elements like extremely small areas of rust and signs of use overall in excellent condition. Today the studio lot is owned by Sony and it houses both Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures. The Myrna Loy Building which was the old MGM sound department exists and it still proudly bears her name. Metro-Golwyn-Mayer Studios unknown
1916Best.-Nr. 148831916. Original gelatin silver print dated March 20 1916 documenting Seventh Avenue between 40th and 41st Streets in Manhattan during the transition from horse-drawn and streetcar transportation to increasingly common automobile traffic. The image records the Hermitage Hotel the Broadway Theatre associated with Paramount Pictures surrounding commercial buildings and the condition of the street surface placing architectural and transportation history within a precisely identified municipal streetscape. Gelatin silver print black and white measuring 7.5 x 9.5 inches. The date "3-20-1916" appears along the bottom edge. A vintage tag identifies the location and camera position: "Location - 7th Ave 40-41Sts. Camera at Sta 27602 15' W of center line. View - Facing north showing condition of street surface." Automobiles and streetcars occupy the roadway while the Hermitage Hotel and Broadway Theatre provide fixed architectural reference points for the view. The combination of exact location data camera station direction of view and stated purpose indicates that the photograph was made as a survey record of street conditions rather than as a general city view. Its detailed documentation of roadway use commercial architecture and transit traffic provides a dated record of Midtown Manhattan in 1916. Very minor chipping to the edges; overall very good condition. unknown
1926Best.-Nr. 148811926. Underhill Irving. Original 1926 photograph of the Farmers' Loan and Trust Building in New York City recording the scale of a recently completed Fifth Avenue office tower within the traffic and streetscape of midtown Manhattan. The building now known as 475 Fifth Avenue was completed in 1925; Underhill's photograph therefore dates from the year immediately following its completion and preserves its early appearance within the rapidly changing commercial architecture of 1920s New York. Original vintage black and white photograph approximately 13 x 11 inches. The image emphasizes the height and massing of the Farmers' Loan and Trust Building while also showing automobiles and street traffic below placing the skyscraper within the everyday circulation of the city. A notation in the lower left corner reads: "Farmer's Loan Trust Bldg. 5AY & 415tC17650. Copyright 1926 by Irving Underhill NY." The large format allows both the architectural façade and surrounding street activity to remain legible. Underhill specialized in commercial and architectural photography of New York and this image records the city during the interwar building boom that was reshaping Fifth Avenue and the Manhattan skyline. The juxtaposition of the tower with contemporary automobiles and street traffic provides a dated visual record of urban development only a year after the building's completion. In very good condition. unknown
1895Best.-Nr. 148821895. Original vintage gelatin silver print copyrighted 1895 showing New York's Postal Telegraph and Home Life Buildings on Broadway shortly after both structures were completed in 1894. The photograph records two early high rise office buildings at the edge of City Hall Park while preserving the transportation patterns of Lower Manhattan with horse drawn vehicles and streetcars sharing the roadway beneath them. Gelatin silver print 1895 measuring 6.5 x 8 inches. Taken from an elevated vantage point the image looks along the street past the Postal Telegraph and Home Life Buildings with pedestrians horse drawn carriages trolleys storefronts and surrounding commercial architecture visible below. The verso is marked "NYC Bldgs. Stc Postal Tel. Bldg." and bears a stamp from "Charles L. Ritzmann Art Store" providing contemporary identification and a commercial provenance mark. Completed during New York's rapid adoption of steel framed high rise construction the neighboring Postal Telegraph and Home Life buildings belonged to a new generation of large commercial structures transforming Lower Manhattan in the 1890s. The photograph dates only a year after their completion and records their original urban setting before automobiles displaced the horse drawn traffic visible in the street. Minor chips to the bottom corners and a minor crease at the upper left corner neither affecting the image; overall very good condition. unknown
