1809réf. 17298London: William Miller 1809. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by D. Havell after Henry Salt on wove paper watermark 'J Whatman'. View of the British colonial island St. Helena prior to its becoming Napoleon's last residence Henry Salt artist traveller diplomat and collector of antiquities was born at Lichfield Staffordshire England 14 June 1780. He was destined to be a portrait-painter and on leaving school was taught drawing by Glover the watercolour-painter of Lichfield. In 1797 he went to London and became a pupil of Joseph Farington R.A. and in 1800 of John Hoppner R.A. The turning point in his career was 3 June 1802 when Salt left London for an eastern tour with George viscount Valentia afterwards Lord Mountnorris whom he accompanied as secretary and draughtsman. He visited India Ceylon and in 1805 Abyssinia returning to England on 26 Oct. 1806. He made many drawings some of which served to illustrate Lord Valentia's Voyages and Travels to India published in 1809. The present image is from a work titled Twenty-four Views in St. Helena the Cape India Ceylon the Red Sea Abyssinia and Egypt published by William Miller with hand-coloured aquatints by D. Havell and J. Bluck from Salt's own drawings. The originals of all these drawings were retained by Lord Valentia who also retained the ownership of the copper plates after Salt's death. The format and style of presentation of the plates is similar to Thomas and William Daniell's great work Oriental Scenery 1795-1808 and the artistry displayed by both Salt and his engravers is in many cases more than a match for the Daniell's images. réf. 3220266Oblong 4to tinted lithographic title six tinted lithographic plates and tinted lithographic endleaf with vignette; by Peter Herwegen after Hans Brunner apart from light scattered foxing clean and fresh in contemporary dark blue cloth front cover ornamented and lettered in gilt spine ornamented in gilt; lightly rubbed. This scarce album of delicately drawn and masterly lithographed scenes documents salt mining in the mountains near Salzburg.z Salt mining was an arduous task the work was dangerous and not very lucrative by the mid-19sths century. With the development of more industrial methods and the introduction of the railways the price of salt collapsed. To help the impoverished population the house of Habsburg promoted tourism in that region and a number of guides to the area started to be issued. The draughtsman was Hans Brunner a genre painter who was born in 1813 in Munich moved to Salzburg around 1840 where he painted portraits of the aristocracy and populated his genre paintings of everyday-life scenes with putti dwarfs and other mythical creatures. The fine lithographs were carried out by Peter Herwegen who was considered the successor to Neureuther. He worked as Neo-Gothic designer for Munich artisans and produced several albums of lithographs.z Dürrnberg [^gmodern spelling^g], Eigenthum v. Jos. Hinterstoisser,

1840réf. 3417Through Russian Waters RUSSIA - TRADE FORMS. Vice Consolato di Russia. Manifesti cominciando dal 1840. Trapani 1840-49. Small folio pp. 196 of pre-printed shipping manifest forms of which 137 completed in ink; contemporary flexible vellum-backed marbled paper boards with ink-lettered label to upper board; corners bumped and spine a little chipped. Fine documentation of the maritime trade from the harbour of Trapani in Sicily. The manifest gives bills of lading from January 1840 to March 1849. The pre-printed manifests are completed in ink giving the name of the freight ship and its captain the destination and then details of its freight i.e. type and quantity of merchandise names of senders and recipients. Trapani boasts some of Europe's oldest salt marshes and salt extraction has been a major business for centuries which still flourishes to the present day. By the nineteenth century Sicilian sea salt was exported to European countries as far away as Norway and Russia. These shipping manifests document that it was sent to destinations as far afield as Constantinople Abo Stavanger Carlscrona Stockholm Bergen Odessa Reval and Riga. Clearly some of the shippers acted on their own account being both captains of the ship and shipper whereas others acted on commission. The shipping routes went through Russian waters which explains the accounts kept by the Russian Vice Consulate.
