ref. 24956Both items signed ‘A. F. Shand’. 18 November 1907 and 16 February 1908. Both on letterhead of 1 Edwardes Place Kensington W. London. Shand is great-grandfather of Queen Camilla. His best-known work is 'The Foundations of Character' 1914. ONE: 18 November 1907. 4pp 16mo. Bifolium. Thirty-five lines. In good condition lightly aged. Folded for postage. Shand - who is weakened by ‘fever & cough’ and ‘too tired to think consecutively’ - thanks Burdett for his ‘very kind letter which was a real consolation to me in my bed’. His ‘argument about avarice was most interesting & I think I quite agree with it. Certainly “possession for its own sake” is the fixed intellectual principle of avarice & the passion rides through its emotions like such a principle through clamorous impulses.’ Though he feels that ‘the best course’ is that when he is better Burdett ‘will dine here & have a talk’ he does not ‘want to force my own theories forward - talk about any thing’. Burdett’s ‘appreciation’ was ‘so nice & to some people that does good because it encourages them to go on. To find the best you can do always contemned must be like the pain of so many poor women despised because their hands & service alone express love while their minds are formed on a plane so far below it.’ TWO: 16 February 1908. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. Twenty-six lines. In good condition lightly-aged but with closed tears at edges of both leaves along central fold for postage. Having read Burdett’s ‘paper on the last ten years of English literature’ he considers it ‘an excellent account. You have distinguished the different qualities of the writers so as to give the foreigner a clear idea of them’. Burdett’s style is not as undeveloped as he would expect in a young writer. ‘In the Johnsonian style I can truthfully say: it was natural without being vulgar & distinguished without being inflated.’ He urges him to ‘go on’ ‘weighing most critically your powers so as not to make the mistake that most of us do going off in wrong directions because we wish to be there & have been a little successful elsewhere’. Both items signed ‘A. F. Shand’. 18 November 1907 and 16 February 1908. Both on letterhead of 1 Edwardes Place, Kensington, unknown

The note fills the page running to twenty-one lines and begins: 'The note on the opposite side was written by the great singer whose lovely voice has delighted thousands since the late rector of Middleton Co. Cork where his father was sexton of the protestant church was good enough to find the money to pay for his musical education.' Hall is said to be living 'almost altogether in California U.S.A.' ref. 2431025 March no year but presumably during his period in Parliament from 1857 to 1869; 12 St James’s Place London. 3pp 12mo. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 25 March no year; 12 St James’s Place London. 3pp 12mo. On a bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged with thin strip cut from top of first leaf not affecting text. Signed ‘A W Kinglake’. The recipient is not named. Presumably writing during his period as Member of Parliament for Bridgewater between 1857 and 1869 he begins ‘My dear Sir / I shall make a pint of being present at the discussion of the Bill which threatens to make Charities liable to local assessment’. He has not considered the question enough to have arrived at a decision but has however seen enough ‘from the number of particulars which have been printed’ to assure him that ‘the imposition of this liability on Public Charities would occasion great inconvenience and dissatisfaction’. 25 March [no year, but presumably during his period in Parliament, from 1857 to 1869]; 12 St James’s Place [London]. 3pp, 12mo unknown

Text: "It is delightful to read that August Manns conductor - see Wiki is still remembered. I was born within sight of the Crystal Palace and can even remember the great fire on one Sunday afternoon when part of the 'Tropical End' was burned to the ground. Those Courts with the fine casts of statues of all periods taught me how to look at their originals in many places. I wonder what has become of the two of the Venus de Milo; one with a hidden wedge of wood on her back and the other without that wedge which was only discovered when she was take to pieces & sent into the country for safety before the siege of Paris in 1869-70 It is not realised by the people who crowd orchestral concerts in these days that in the 'seventies there were very few - just the Philharmonic & the Crystal Palace until Richler Presumably Johann Baptist Isidor Richter came to London. At the Crystal Palace we heard many novelties and became familiar with much which is now old-fashioned. Sarasati played Tchaichovsky's sic Violin Concerto there during the life of the composer and we heard scraps of 'Parsifal'. How that choice murdered the Grail Music! Yours sincerely A.E.F. Horniman". Signed simply 'Tedder' in the writer's usual manner the letter is written to Geoffrey Moore founder of the Buccaneers Cricket Club and demonstrates the airman's keen and continuing interest in the sport. Tedder was President of Surrey County Cricket Club from 1953 to 1958. The letter regretfully declines Moore's invitation to attend the Buccaneer's annual dinner held at Lords: 'I've already got a date I can't budge!'.
