1870ref. 214215Japan. No date. Circa1870. Two charming small watercolour paintings each measuring 13.6 x 18.5cm a little worming. These two vibrant paintings depict the Daimonji-yaki festival in Kyoto capturing the festive atmosphere of the evening celebration. Historically Daimonji-yaki was held in July according to the lunar calendar though it is now celebrated in August. During this event fires are lit in various shapes on the hills surrounding Kyoto symbolically guiding the spirits of the deceased back to the other world. The first painting showcases the character "dai" 大 illuminated on the hillside. A diverse group of people has gathered to witness the spectacle their faces filled with awe as they gaze at the glowing lights. In the second painting a figure resembling a boat known as the Funagata is depicted on the northern hill of Kyoto. Four individuals including a woman have climbed to the top of a steep roof to get a better view of the lights. While some members of the group appear to be enjoying the view one person seems apprehensive nervously looking down from their elevated position. These paintings beautifully capture the excitement and anticipation of the Daimonji-yaki festival showcasing the diverse reactions and emotions of the spectators as they partake in this traditional celebration in Kyoto. . unknown

The game begins at Haneda Aerodrome noted as having opened in 1931 with players choosing to journey eastward or westward to destinations across Europe the Americas and Asia. A striking historical detail is the aborted Shanghai stop reflecting the conflict on the ground at the time while the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics are highlighted as a future event. The final destination is Tokyo depicted in an aerial view at the center of the sheet. The game includes eight original playing pieces featuring photographic illustrations of period aircraft including the Fokker Super Universal produced under license in Japan a Lockheed model and the iconic Zeppelin airship. Blending travel fantasy with real-world events this sugoroku captures the interwar era’s fascination with aviation and global connectivity while cleverly promoting household remedies. 1929ref. 218448Japan.: 海軍省. Kaigunshō. Showa 4 1929. Large colour folding map black and white photographic illustrations inset charts 107.3 x 225cm. Paper browned and a little soiled in places small holes at some fold points and edges neatly repaired with washi tissue on the verso. A handsome and striking map. This extra-large world map is richly illustrated with numerous photographic images showcasing the overseas activities of the Japanese Imperial Navy. It traces the sailing routes of naval training ships between 1925 and 1928 and features several black and white photographs of the ships and their crew during visits to locations such as Paris Rome Egypt and China. Inset charts on both sides of the map illustrate the growth of Japanese naval power from 1894 to 1928 in comparison with foreign navies including those of Britain France and Russia. The timing of the map’s publication is noteworthy. At the time Japan was adhering to naval power limits set in proportion to other nations such as Britain and the United States under the Washington Naval Treaty. However the inset charts clearly show a significant increase in Japanese naval strength over the years. By the 1930s the treaty’s influence had declined and Japan formally withdrew in 1933 following its departure from the League of Nations. . 海軍省. [Kaigunshō]. unknown
1944ref. 222257Shanghai and Okayama. 1944-1945. A group of correspondence comprising seventeen letters in envelopes ninety five sheets in total three postcards and a business card. Sixteen of the envelopes measure approximately 22 × 8.5cm and contain between one and fourteen leaves; the enclosed letters vary in size though are predominantly 16 × 21cm or 25.5 × 18cm in size. The seventeenth envelope measures 15 × 9.7cm and contains a letter measuring 20 × 30.6cm. The three postcards measure 14 × 9cm and the business card measures 9 × 5.5cm. The collection is in good to very good condition the envelopes show sign of wear and are chipped in places but still intact there is some occasional foxing or browning but overall in good to very good condition. A fascinating collection of Japanese wartime letters sent between members of an Okayama-based family named Takei. The letters date from the last two years of the Pacific War. The eldest of the three sons of the family Takei Minoru 武井稔 was at that time a student at the Tōa Dōbun Shoin University 東亜同文書院大学 also known as Tung Wen College in Shanghai a higher educational college established in 1939 by Japan's Tōa Dōbunkai East Asia Common Culture Society a Pan-Asianist organization which promoted Japanese cultural links with China while also seeking to expand Japan's power and influence throughout East Asia. Most of the letters in the collection were sent by Takei Minoru from his college in Shanghai to his family in Japan. Minoru's detailed letters give a vivid picture of life in college reporting the courses he was taking which included Chinese language literature and geography martial arts and 'Theories of the Japanese Spirit' Nihon Seishinron. Initially Takei Minoru seems to have been a good student but the letters also document his homesickness and the increasing difficulties of life in wartime Shanghai. The collection includes a circular sent to Minoru and presumably also other students by the Tōa Dōbunkai authorities in December 1944 explaining the wartime labour in shipbuilding and other factories which the students were now required to perform. The letter also discusses soaring inflation in Shanghai and the impact that this is having on the students' lives while another letter from the Tōa Dōbunkai dated October 1944 gives statistics of the hyperinflation in war-torn China which the organization offers as the reason for its plans to raise college fees. Minoru himself describes being sent to work in an engine factory and his letters express his growing concern about the war situation though he also describes happier moments such as celebrating New Year at the house of a Japanese resident in Shanghai. In a later letter in the collection Minoru describes how he has been called in for a medical examination for military conscription and been found fit for service at the highest level of fitness - a result he was hoping to achieve. He was hoping to return home before joining the military but wrote to his younger brothers that he had not been permitted to do so. By March 1945 the Shanghai college is pursuing Minoru for unpaid fees in letters addressed to his family's home address which suggests that he had left the university. The fact these letters were kept might imply that Minoru did not return from the war. An intriguing insight into the everyday life at a college campus in Shanghai of a young man in the midst of the chaos of war. . unknown

1937ref. 218484東京. Tokyo.: 名誉蔵. Meiyokura. Showa 12 1937-1939. Sixteen delightful small porcelain spinning tops measuring 2.0 x 1.7cm in size each accompanied by ten handsome colour printed product labels heightened in gilt with soft purple cord ties 8.3 x 6cm. An intriguing collection of sake advertising ephemera in very good condition. These sake promotional giveaways and accompanying die-cut cards in the shape of the Order of the Golden Kite are advertisements associated with Meiyo-gura a sake brand sold in Nihonbashi Tokyo. The advertisement describes a koma spinning top attached beneath the bottle top which could also serve as a small entertainment item. Each koma was hexagonal and could be used as a dice or a novelty accessory for drinking games. The value printed on the koma could be redeemed if customers presented both the koma and the accompanying medal card. These redemption promotions were available between 1937 and 1939. However in June 1941 the rationing of sake was introduced firmly ending such promotional schemes. The product labels which were finely printed as these are also informed customers about how to claim these discounts further enhancing the appeal of the product during its promotional period. A curious example of the everyday cultural impacts of Japanese militarism - the Order of the Golden Kite was an award exclusively for military service and was not available to the civilian public. Over the course of the Second Sino-Japanese and Pacific Wars the order would be awarded over 140000 times dwarfing all previous conflicts and reflecting the frenetic nature of Japan's total mobilisation. . 名誉蔵.
