2020New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 112 p. Turks living in Rhodes and Kos (Istanköy) today have been one of the ancient peoples of the islands since 1522. Finally, the Islands were ceded to Greece with the 1947 Conference of Paris by stipulating in Article l4 that "these islands shall be and remain demilitarized". With the ceding of the islands to Greece, the dramatic condition of the Rhodes and Kos(Istanköy)Turks became increasingly more intolerable. However, the link between the Turks of the island and Turkey, in terms of Awareness of Turkishness and Solidarity as well as socio-economic terms with Turkey, was also a prevalent issue in the past as it is today. In fact, Rhodes and Kos (Istanköy) Turks did not hesitate to extend their support to the National Campaign (Milli Müdafaa), both directly and indirectly, while the Turks fought against the Greek forces under the command of Mustafa Kemal Pasha in Anatolia. They tried to provide contribution to the campaign with the "Rhodes and Kos (Istanköy)Association for the Defense of Islamic Rights" (Rodos ve Istanköy Müdafaa-i Hukuk-i Islamiye Cemiyeti) in 1919. Likewise, the book entitled "Rhodes and Kos: Contributions to the Turkish War of Independence and Current Problems" mainly aims to reveal the contributions of the island Turks to the Turkish War of Independence. This book consists of three consecutive sections. The first section covers the "Contributions of Rhodes and Kos (Istanköy) Turks to the Turkish War of Independence". In the second section, on the other hand, the subject of "The Current Problems of the Rhodes and Kos Turks Stemming from the Turkish-Greek Relations as Regards the Aegean Sea" was addressed. In the third section, the subject of "Recommendations for Transforming Turkish-Greek Relations into a Lasting Friendship" was addressed on a general level and in terms of Rhodes and Kos (Istanköy)Turkishness. Thus, we wished to bring the current problems experienced by the Turks regarding the Turkish-Greek relations into the agenda of the national and international public by establishing a connection with the history of the remaining Turks in the islands.

The fourth book of the "Sounds of Silence" series has been published with the support of Consulate General of Sweden. Izmit's Armenians Speak, is a product of the oral history project carried out since 2011 by Hrant Dink Foundation. The Sounds of Silence - IV: Izmit's Armenians Speak, which compiles 9 out of the 30 interviews, is a narration of Armenian lives and differing experiences of Armenianness as it is told by people living in ¿stanbul, Yervan and Canada. The aim is thus to establish a dialogue between the reader and the narrator. The foreword by Ferda Balancar, who is a journalist and one of the Project coordinators, and the afterword by E. Aras Ergüne¿, who is a research assistant at Philosophy Department of Kocaeli University, have contributed in a significant way to the book. There is also a collection of lyrics and tongue twisters by the Armenians who lived at ¿zmit and surrounding areas. Izmit's Armenians Speak is taking us to a visit through the memoirs of the Armenian society. This book is giving clues about the "self" and "other" perception the Armenian society carries, by giving examples on the deportation and genocide memories transmitted through generations, as the other books of the series. "First, silence allows the members of the generations that had experienced the Genocide firsthand, or through the narrations of the members of the preceding generations, the relief of shutting themselves off to the trauma of the Genocide and carrying on with their daily lives. (¿) The second function that the shroud of silence serves against the Genocide experience is of a public rather than individual concern. The generations that have suffered the Genocide considered it their duty to carry the burden of their trauma to the grave so that it wouldn't rub off on the lives of the succeeding generations and so that they could create an unblemished memory space for their progeny. The way to do this is by respondin.g with silence to the questions posed to them and passing this high-mindedness on to posterity."

2013New Turkish Paperback. Pbo. Mint. In Turkish. Ills. 427 p. Demy 8vo. Turkish Edition of 'Roxolana in European literature, history and culture'. This study is the first book-length scholarly study of the pervasiveness and significance of Roxolana in the European imagination. Roxolana, or 'Hurrem Sultan', was a sixteenth-century Ukrainian woman who made an unprecedented career from harem slave and concubine to legal wife and advisor of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566). Her influence on Ottoman affairs generated legends in many a European country. The essays gathered here represent an interdisciplinary survey of her legacy; the contributors view Roxolana as a transnational figure that reflected the shifting European attitudes towards 'the Other', and they investigate her image in a wide variety of sources, ranging from early modern historical chronicles, dramas and travel writings, to twentieth-century historical novels and plays. Also included are six European source texts featuring Roxolana, here translated into modern English for the first time. Importantly, this collection examines Roxolana from both Western and Eastern European perspectives; source material is taken from England, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Poland, and Ukraine. The volume is an important contribution to the study of early modern transnationalism, cross-cultural exchange.
