2020New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 176 p. Generally, outside of the academic word, nomads are not considered as the part of the civilization process. Most of the times, due to the Eurocentric thoughts that were developed in the 19th century, scientific and technological improvements of the humanity were considered unique to Europe. Therefore, other people that were conquered by European armies were thought that they were completely out of the civilization process and the lived as 'barbarians' because they did not live or think like Europeans. According to this view, if they will civilize or they can be considered as 'developed nation', they had to live like Europeans, at least, they had to have same cultural attitudes or they must mimic. This bias made hard to understand how other cultures lived and what they developed in their material culture. However, during the 20th century, this linear and positivist understanding of history have been changed. In this book, first of all intellectual process on scientific progress was evaluated and then, the place where the Turks could be placed in this progress was examined.

From the midst of the fifteenth century on the Ottoman-Turkish Empire played a crucial role in shaping European history. This factor has not been weaved into Western historiography to its detriment, because explaining concepts such as raison d'etat, realpolitik, balance of power or even European identity remain somewhat shortchanged without according the Ottoman-Turkish Empire a role in the evolution as well as functioning of these concepts. Mutual systemic influences are a foregone conclusion however overlooked. This volume comprises nine research articles on the basic characteristics of the Ottoman Empire and its political/economic relations with Europe, published previously, but updated with further evidence. The Ottoman Empire is generally depicted and perceived as the adversary and anti¬thesis of Europe and Europeanness in Western historiography because of certain historic reasons such as the Christian crusading tradition, public hostility due to long lasting warfare, cultural estrangement and perhaps because the Ottomans remained outside the Enlightenment process. However, there is much more to it than confrontation. Our research findings presented in this compilation point to the impact of the Ottoman-Turkish Empire in shaping modern Europe, specifically as of the 16th century and socio-cultural exchanges between the two realms through five hundred years of encounter. First Edition.
