In the 15 century chronicle "Vetus Chronicon Holsatiae" first printed here by Leibnitz states that the Danes were of the Tribe of Dan while the Jutes the Jews. This is the first announcement of the theory later called Nordic Israelism or Norse Israelism. "It is the belief that Scandinavian peoples or the Nordic countries Denmark Faroe Islands Finland Iceland Norway Sweden descend from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. Although there is evidence of such a belief from literature during the Early Modern Period Nordic Israelism as a movement and ideology only emerged in the latter half of the 19th century among several early proponents of British Israelism."Wikipedia.Ravier: 49 tome I 44 Tome II but Ravier is not clear on this point hardcover

1856Best.-Nr. 46373London Taylor and Francis 1856. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1856 - Vol. 146 - Part I. Pp. 297-342 a. pp. 343-355. Clean and fine. First printing of the paper in which Airy describes his remarkable experiments aiming at finding the density of the earth. His approach to the problem was to determine the differences of gravity at the top as well at the bottom of a suitable deep mine."One of the most remarkable of Airy's researches was his determination of the mean density of the Earth. In 1826 the idea occurred to him of attacking this problem by means of pendulum experiments at the top and bottom of a deep mine. His first attempt made in the same year at the Dolcoath mine in Cornwall failed in consequence of an accident to one of the pendulums. A second attempt in 1828 was defeated by a flooding of the mine and many years elapsed before another opportunity presented itself. The experiments eventually took place at the Harton pit near South Shields in 1854. Their immediate result was to show that gravity at the bottom of the mine exceeded that at the top by 1/19286 of its amount the depth being 383 m 1256 ft From this he was led to the final value of Earth's specific density of 6.566.This value although considerably in excess of that previously found by different methods was held by Airy from the care and completeness with which the observations were carried out and discussed to be "entitled to compete with the others on at least equal terms." The currently accepted value for Earth's density is 5.5153 g/cm³. Wikipedia. unknown

1803Best.-Nr. 42303London Bulwer and Co. 1803. 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London." Year 1803-Part II. Pp. 339-382 and 2 engraved plates. First appearance of a fundamental paper in cosmology and physics as it contains the first observational data to support that Newton's dynamical laws holds outside the solar system. Herschel shows here that the circulating motions of double-stars were under gravitational forces. Until then the validity of the law of gravity was only established within the solar system. Now a century after the establishment of the law it was traced out in the motion of incredibly distant stars and the theory first truly earned its title of Universal. The exact proof of the mutual gravitation of the double-stars was only obtained five years after Herschel's death when the motions of the stars were more precisely dtermined. One of the most notable of Herschel's discoveries of double-stars binary stars. A first cataloque of such pairs was published early in 1782 and contained 269 of which 227 were new discoveries. "Twenty years after the publication of his first cataloque Herschel was of Michell's opinion - Michell had expressed the opinion that the odds in favour of a physical relation between the members of herschel's newly discovered double stars were "beyond arithmetic" - but was able to support it by evidence of an entirely novel and much more direct character. A series of observations of Castor presented in two papers in the "Philosophical Transaction" in 1803 the paper offered here and 1804 which were fortunately supplemented by an observation of Bradley's in 1759 had shewn a progressive alteration in the direction of the line joining its two components of such a character as to leave no doubt that the two stars were revolving round one another; and there were five oher cases in which a similar motion was observed.it was shown that the double-star was really formed by a connected pair of stars near enough to influence one another's mortion."Berry in "A Short History of Astronomy" pp. 342-43. unknown

1811Best.-Nr. 42013London Bulwer and Co. 1811. Large 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London." Year 1811-Part I. Playfair's memoir: pp. 347-377 and 1 large folded engraved plate. Clean and fine broad margins. First appearance of Playfair's investigations on the Schehallien mountain in Scotland.John Playfair first visited the Scottish mountain Schiehallion during Nevil Maskelyne's 1774 plumbline deflection experiment which was conducted to measure the density of the Earth. The mathematician Charles Hutton analysed the survey data from the experiment reporting the mean Earth specific gravity as 4.5 in 1778. Playfair undertook a lithological mapping exercise in 1801 to improve the accuracy of Hutton's estimate and reported a range of 4.564.87 in 1811. The computation of the gravitational effect of topography with variable subsurface density effectively made him the creator of the first geophysical model. As such not only was Playfair's Schiehallion contribution pioneering in itself but it was representative of his more significant works in both mathematics and geology in that he built on existing benchmark work with novel and valuable additions of his own. Although Playfair's map of the extent of the Schiehallion quartzite was quite accurate the Society's fourth President John MacCulloch having visited Schiehallion was dismissive of Playfair's representation of the subsurface density variation. MacCulloch spent several years searching Scotland for a more favourable site for a plumbline experiment travels that allowed him to compile the data for his 1836 geological map of Scotland. John R.
