1958réf. 203391958. Meaker Marijane writing as Vin Packer and Ann Aldrich; Torres Tereska; Marchal Lucie; Christian Paula. Lesbian pulp novels 1958-1961. These works document lesbian representation in midcentury pulp fiction through novels written by women a distinct subset of the genre that offered alternative portrayals of same-sex relationships during a period of widespread censorship and medicalization of homosexuality. Issued within commercial paperback publishing these texts present narratives centered on identity emotional experience and interpersonal relationships providing evidence of how women authors approached lesbian subject matter with greater emphasis on character interiority and in some cases less punitive narrative outcomes. The material supports research into LGBTQ literary history gender and authorship and the development of lesbian-focused narratives in mid-twentieth-century print culture. Five mass market paperback volumes published between 1958 and 1961 each approximately 200 pages and measuring about 4.75 x 7 inches. 1 Packer Vin Marijane Meaker. The Evil Friendship. Greenwich Conn: Fawcett Publications 1958. First printing. Follows two teenage girls exploring romantic attachment marketed as "Vin Packer's latest study of the tragedy of forbidden love." 2 Torres Tereska. The Dangerous Games. Greenwich Conn: Fawcett Publications 1961. Second printing. Centers on a married woman in Paris entering a polyamorous relationship and recognizing same-sex desire promoted as "The unorthodox love experiences of a young French woman." 3 Marchal Lucie. The Mesh. New York: Bantam Books 1959. New Bantam edition. Translation of a French novel depicting a relationship between two women with cover text describing "strange hidden passions. women living in a forbidden world." 4 Christian Paula. Another Kind of Love. Greenwich Conn: Fawcett Publications 1961. First Crest printing. Set in Hollywood following a writer and an actress in a same-sex relationship framed as "Women in Love with each other." 5 Aldrich Ann Marijane Meaker. We Too Must Love. Greenwich Conn: Fawcett Publications 1958. First printing. A nonfiction-inflected narrative drawing on lived experience introduced by the author as "the whys and wherefores of Lesbian life in New York City-as I have known it." These publications emerged within a pulp marketplace that relied on sensational marketing while operating under restrictions on explicit representation shaping how lesbian relationships could be depicted and circulated. Women authors such as Marijane Meaker writing under multiple names contributed to a shift toward more self-directed portrayals of lesbian identity while other writers expanded geographic and thematic scope across American and European settings. The presence of multiple works by women in a single grouping highlights a less dominant but significant strand of authorship within the genre. Together these texts provide primary evidence for the study of lesbian representation publishing practices and readership in the decades preceding broader public visibility of LGBTQ communities including developments associated with the Stonewall Riots. Light wear to covers with minor rubbing; textblocks tight and interiors clean. Overall very good condition. unknown books

1833réf. 1714281833. VEVEY. Fête des Vignerons 1833. Continuous panorama scroll containing 30 consecutive lithographs numbered 1-30 from the 1833 Festival of the Vignerons at Vevey hand-coloured at the time of publication backed with linen and conjoined to form a continuous scroll of 14.4 meters long. Plate size: oblong folio 170 x 470 mm. in a new cloth folding box. Lausanne: Lithographie de Spengler & Cie 1833. An extremely rare complete copy in contemporary hand-colouring of this remarkable series of plates in scroll format depicting the 1833 Festival of the Vingerons at Vevey Switzerland -- since 1791 this ancient festival has been celebrated five times per century. The scroll shows the entire procession in panorama format; the procession moved in three groups: Herds and Flocks plates 1-8 the Harvest plates 9-18 and Winemakers plates 19-30. The festival celebrates the vineyards and wine production in the Vevey area. The artist of the work was Christian Gottlieb Steinlen 1779-1847 a resident of Vevey who acted as the official artist for the 1833 Festival see Thieme-Becker. Sources for the Festival of the Winegrowers are unusually diverse: besides Greco-Roman gods such as Bacchus Plates 20 & 22 there were representations of Judeo-Christian myths such as the story of Noah first winegrower in the Bible -- see Plate 27. 1792réf. 65431792. 59 leaves enumerating the names of grapes cereal crops and oils and their prices for nearly two centuries. Small folio 273 x 178 mm. 18th-cent. vellum over boards tail of spine defective two of four ties lacking. Burgundy: 1622-1792. A fascinating and rare survival which details the precipitous rise in the prices of Burgundian wine and the emergence of a hierarchy among regions and vintages over a 170-year period. This document consisting of three gatherings 28; 28; 3 leaves bound together and written in several legible hands provides a wealth of information on grain harvests in the region which varied greatly from year to year and indicates years with disastrous harvests. The present manuscript constitutes a unique history of agriculture in Burgundy especially pertaining to the evolving market for Côte de Nuits wine. “Burgundy had no experience like the boomtime of 18th-century Bordeaux. No new wines were invented no new districts planted. The Bordeaux picture is all expansion and creation; the Burgundy one of evolving tastes and techniques of new market forces and overall of slowly progressing definition: a more precise notion of the character style and value of the wine from each corner of the Côte…In the Côte de Nuits the notion of the ‘cru’ was further advanced…The vineyards were generally less overcrowded and by now planted with cuttings rather than layers; hence more deep-rooting. Increasingly in the 18th century owners of the most prestigious crus selected their best grapes to make separate cuvées the best vat being called the ‘tête de cuvée’.”–Hugh Johnson Vintage 1989 pp. 267 & 272. The motivation for compiling this record-book may have come from the introduction of a law in 1622 that outlawed the sale of Lyonnais and Beaujolais wines as Burgundian. The records of the first three decades consist mostly of grains and oil from the region but in the early 1670s wines begin to predominate and the lists for each year become increasingly long. It is very likely that at this point landowners would have shifted to using any arable land for vastly more lucrative grapes. By the 1690s dozens of grape varietals are noted from communes such as Auvilliers Les Cailles Chambolle Chorey Comblanchien Corgoloin Côte de Beaune Gilly Magny Saint Georges Saint Julien Les Cailles Vaucrains Pouilly Prissey etc. Prices for wine rose enormously from the 1690s and experienced peaks in 1701 1733 and 1770. Wines are increasingly categorized by the mid-18th century according to vineyard and in some cases cru. The name “de Bays” appears several times in the manuscript and the signature of “de Bays” is found at the end of the year 1771. Very few comparable documents survive and the present manuscript provides a vast amount of data on the prices for wine grapes and grains in the 17th and 18th centuries.
