ABOUT THIS BOOK: The crux of this absorbing and timely memoir of Cold War espionage is the swap of KGB agent Rudolph Abel for American pilot Frank Powers back to their superpower homes in 1962. Abel had been caught spying in New York in the late 1950s; Powers shot down on a reconnaissance mission over Sverdlovsk in 1960. Yet astonishingly in 1983 it transpired that the man tried and convicted as Rudolph Abel was in fact .Willie Fisher from Newcastle! The narrative traces Willie's story from Newcastle to Moscow to New York tracing the birth of his father Heinrich to German parents in Russia. Despite marriage and a daughter and life in the northeast of England Willie was dedicated to his Communist Party work and an expertise with radio operation and his facility for languages. When Willie's spying activities were exposed in New York cautious to the end he claimed to be Rudolph Abel the name of an old comrade and the Soviet authorities colluded in his deceit. This singular account of the changing face of communism and the evolution of a century in politics is also the story of a virtual dynasty of spies seen at work and at home - like father like son. Photographic illustrations of the facilities and major steps in wine production accompany the text. In 1847 Johann Gramp emigrated from Bavaria to the Barossa Valley selecting 83 acres along Jacob's Creek at Rowlands Flat and planting grapes. The first vintage was in 1850. In 1874 Gramp gave 44 acres to his son Gustav as a wedding gift. Gustav named the vineyard Orlando thought to be German for Roland as in 'Rolands' Flat. The vineyards remained under family control until 1971. Today they are part of the international conglomerate Pernod Ricard. Written at a technical and commercial turning point in the history of Australian wine production From Vine to Wine provides an illustrated insight into wine production techniques just before the wholesale introduction of modern production techniques and equipment into Australia influenced by innovation in the Californian and German wine industries. At the time of publication Orlando production was 80% fortified wine and 20% table wine. Interestingly From Vine to Wine highlights and promotes table wines which became the future of wine production in Australia. Within the next few years G Gramp & Sons under the guidance of Colin Gramp introduced a number of technical innovations and in 1956 released the iconic 'Barossa Pearl'. At the same time G Gramp & Sons began to produce their iconic range of riesling including Steingarten and the Orlando Ribbon wines. Scarce.
