1833réf. 1714281833. VEVEY. Fête des Vignerons 1833. Continuous panorama scroll containing 30 consecutive lithographs numbered 1-30 from the 1833 Festival of the Vignerons at Vevey hand-coloured at the time of publication backed with linen and conjoined to form a continuous scroll of 14.4 meters long. Plate size: oblong folio 170 x 470 mm. in a new cloth folding box. Lausanne: Lithographie de Spengler & Cie 1833. An extremely rare complete copy in contemporary hand-colouring of this remarkable series of plates in scroll format depicting the 1833 Festival of the Vingerons at Vevey Switzerland -- since 1791 this ancient festival has been celebrated five times per century. The scroll shows the entire procession in panorama format; the procession moved in three groups: Herds and Flocks plates 1-8 the Harvest plates 9-18 and Winemakers plates 19-30. The festival celebrates the vineyards and wine production in the Vevey area. The artist of the work was Christian Gottlieb Steinlen 1779-1847 a resident of Vevey who acted as the official artist for the 1833 Festival see Thieme-Becker. Sources for the Festival of the Winegrowers are unusually diverse: besides Greco-Roman gods such as Bacchus Plates 20 & 22 there were representations of Judeo-Christian myths such as the story of Noah first winegrower in the Bible -- see Plate 27. Elegantly executed by a professional scribe this manuscript's eight principal sections cover wines ciders beers perries meads and eaux-de-vie. Each column has volumes from small fractions of a barrel to multiple barrels on the left and the corresponding payments due in livres sous and deniers on the right. The following two sections treat beverages generating crown revenue collected from transactions in gross and by the drink - again non-Breton wines then local wines ciders beers perries and meads. The final two sections address distilled fruit liquors and eaux-de-vie both wholesale and retail. The owner of our codex added two one-page appendices. The first provides the payment amounts for imported wines taxed at 44 sous. The second does the math for spirits at 30 sous per velte c. 2 U.S. gallons - up to 10000 veltes. 1950réf. 4971Biebrich Germany 1950. Photographers and compiler uncredited. Large album format 30 x 23.5 cm. 23 leaves 19 with black-&-white photographs. Captions in English. Collection of photographs dating variously from the middle years of the last century assembled evidently for an English-speaking audience and providing an overview of the cellar maturation monitoring and bottling operations of the German sparkling wine specialist Henkell & Co. Famously known as the Schloß palace the complex on view was built in the Wiesbaden suburb of Biebrich between 1907 and 1909 by the architect Paul Bonatz 1877-1956 to the specifications of Otto Henkell 1869-1929. Henkel & Co. more than weathered World War II. It does not appear that the family sought ties with the National Socialists but they didn't have to. Otto's daughter Anna Elisabeth Annalies 1896-1973 married the future NS foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop who became a principal investor in the firm. It is worth remembering that Germans have always appreciated sparkling wine and a great deal of it was drunk in the domestic market during war time especially after the regime abolished the tax on Deutscher Sekt and Schaumwein. In 1952 Annalies petitioned for her son Rudolf to regain partial control of the company and the West German courts ruled in their favor. Henkell & Co. continued to produce Henkell Trocken under its own name until the sale of the winery in 1986. Little is ascertainable regarding the origins of the album. Otto Henkel--the elder Otto's nephew son of his brother Karl--is present in the portrait collection of company managers on the final leaf of photographs but his presence spans many years. The vintage labels have not yet been applied to bottles shown in a production line on photograph fifteen. Possibly automobiles of ca. 1950--including a white roadster--are depicted in an aerial photograph of the Schloß though sufficient details are undiscernable. And a Bizerbo scale shown in the seventeenth photograph was no longer manufactured by 1951 though of course it may have been in use well before being captured by the photographer. Unique; well-mounted and artful arrangement of professional images celebrating a revered German wine house very likely as it looked before during and immediately after the Second World War. Buff paper age-toned. Brown paper wrappers lightly worn sewn with a brown cord; head and foot of spine lightly chipped. Helmut Arntz. Für ihre Probe deutscher Sekt. Julia Child Playboy Magazine and Zagat each proclaimed Lutèce the best restaurant in the United States; the New York Times gave the restaurant four stars. Spiral bound in gilt-stamped blue wrappers.
