Lengthy volume by the former assistant attorney general for the Justice Department responsible for enforcing the Volstead Act from 1921-1929. "She worked closely with both the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and the Anti-Saloon League to build public support for the federal efforts. She also used liquor prosecutions to generate headlines. A number of times Willebrandt sat in the courtroom while one of her assistants pressed a case. Since women government lawyers were quite a novelty in the 1920s her actions generated press coverage. Similarly she focused much of her action on corruption cases that grew out of the violation of prohibition again headline grabbers. She did not seek press notice gratuitously but as a part of a Justice Department campaign to showcase prohibition enforcement activity and to make a case to the public for cleaner government. Willebrandt published first in syndicated newspaper column form and then as a book The Inside of Prohibition her vision for effective prohibition law enforcement. She called for clean government greater coordination between national and local officials and especially for common people to take responsibility for seeing the laws enforced" Badr Jehad and Mark Weir. 1773Best.-Nr. 4718Mexico City 1773. Very good. Manuscript broadside approximately 12 x 7.75 inches. Light edge wear minor foxing and staining. Accomplished in a highly legible script. An attractive manuscript transfer of title for a pulqueria in 18th-century Zempoala northeast of Mexico City and south of Pachuca. Zempoala was the heartland for production of the traditional Aztec fermented beverage though at the beginning of the 21st century there remained only one producer in the area. The present document transfers ownership of the Hacienda de Tecajete and its Pulqueria de Arbol from Antonio Garcia to his neighbor Diego Alvares Garcia. The hacienda was established east of Zempoala in the late 16th century and its grounds and buildings were developed over the next three hundred years until it was one of the country's largest producers of pulque during the Porfiriato and was owned by one of Diaz's generals. Although the estate is no longer a producer it is designated a Mexican heritage site for its history and architecture. The text here reads: "Mexico Año de 1773. Título de la Hazienda de Tecaxete y Pulqueria del Arbol que en Jurisdiccion de Zempuala la dicha Hazienda y en esta Ciudad la referida Pulqueria quedaron por Bienes de Dn. Antonio Garcia y se le remataron a Dn. Diego Albares Garcia vecino y del comercio de esta Ciudad." The document is illustrated by an anthropomorphized smiling sun and several manuscript flourishes at the foot of the sheet. Overall a very interesting manuscript broadside for a significant hacienda and pulqueria of 18th-century Mexico. unknown

1724Best.-Nr. 6524Mexico City: December 23 1724. About very good. 4pp. on two separated leaves. Disbound. Lower edge trimmed close. Contemporary ink tax stamps. Light tanning and dust soiling. A printed proclamation dated December 23 1724 condemning the trade and the use of certain alcoholic spirits in colonial Mexico. The text of the decree begins: "Por quanto la detestable malicia de muchos indignos y desalmados hombres haziendo con declarado abuso publico alarde de sus delictos sin temor no respecto a las Leyes Cedulas Reales Ordenanzas y otros repetidas prohibiciones han introducido y se han estendido por todo el Reyno muchos abominables generos de bebidas.todas dañosisimas a la salud y contra las buenas costumbres." The "abominables" spirits include aguardiente mezcal and other distilled from agave sugar cane honey and other sources all of which were considered both harmful to the health of the population and contrary to good morals. Pulque is particularly single out in this document and all those selling possessing or drinking it were to be given two hundred lashes and six years of galley service. We locate three copies of this decree in OCLC at Texas A&M UCSD and the Newberry. December 23 unknown
