réf. 9914White House champagne bottle undated documents the material culture of presidential entertaining through an object reportedly distributed at a White House dinner. Formal White House dining has historically served both ceremonial and diplomatic purposes with official dinners used to extend presidential hospitality and in the case of state dinners to honor visiting heads of state or government. Without documentation identifying the particular dinner represented here the bottle is most useful as evidence of White House hospitality commemorative presentation and the material objects associated with presidential social functions rather than as an artifact attributable to a specific administration. Green champagne bottle measuring approximately 8 inches high with a large etched white Presidential Seal on one side and the manufacturer's name "Great Western Champagne" on the opposite side. Great Western originated with the Pleasant Valley Wine Company in New York's Finger Lakes region where its sparkling wine acquired the Great Western name in the nineteenth century and became an established American sparkling-wine brand. The etched seal visually connects the commercial bottle to its reported White House use distinguishing it from an ordinary retail example. The bottle is reported to have been given at a White House dinner; no accompanying documentation date menu guest list or presidential attribution is described. Wine has occupied a documented place in White House entertaining across successive administrations and surviving service objects can illuminate the ceremonial and social practices surrounding presidential hospitality. Because the exact dinner remains unidentified its strongest documentary value lies in the combination of commercial Great Western branding and White House Presidential Seal decoration rather than in any unverified association with an individual president or diplomatic occasion. No specific defects reported; near fine. A tangible piece of White House dining culture that preserves the intersection of presidential ceremony American wine production and official hospitality. unknown

Part Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. Antoine Arnauld 1612 - 1694 - Le Grand As Contemporaries Called Him To Distinguish Him From His Father - Was A French Roman Catholic Theologian Philosopher And Mathematician. He Was One Of The Leading Intellectuals Of The Jansenist Group Of Port-Royal And Had A Very Thorough Knowledge Of Patristics. He Was One Of The First To Adopt The Philosophy Of René Descartes Though With Certain Orthodox Reservations Relating To Meditations On First Philosophy; And Between 1683 And 1685 He Had A Long Battle With Nicolas Malebranche On The Relation Of Theology To Metaphysics. On The Whole Public Opinion Leant To Arnauld's Side. When Malebranche Complained That His Adversary Had Misunderstood Him Boileau Silenced Him With The Question: "My Dear Sir Whom Do You Expect To Understand You If M. Arnauld Does Not" Later Arnauld Was Engaged In An Extensive Correspondence With Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Regarding The Latter's Views Detailed In His "Discourse On Metaphysics" 1686. Popular Regard For Arnauld's Penetration Was Much Increased In His L'art De Penser Commonly Known As The Port-Royal Logic Which Kept Its Place As An Elementary Text-Book Until The 20Th Century And Is Considered A Paradigmatical Work Of Term Logic. Arnauld Came To Be Regarded As Important Among The Mathematicians Of His Time; One Critic Described Him As The Euclid Of The 17Th Century. After His Death His Reputation Began To Wane. Contemporaries Admired Him As A Master Of Intricate Reasoning; On This Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet The Greatest Theologian Of The Age Agreed With Henri François D'aguesseau The Greatest Lawyer. However His Eagerness To Win Every Argument Endeared Him To No One. "In Spite Of Myself" Arnauld Once Said Regretfully "My Books Are Seldom Very Short."Citation Needed. Despite Arnauld's Achievements In Various Fields His Name Is Mostly Known Because Of Pascal's Acclaimed Writings Which Were More Fit For The General Public Than Arnauld's Technical Essays. réf. ABC_47678Colophon: Cologne 1502. Small 8vo ca. 12.5 x 10 cm. Cornelius von Zierickzee Later half vellum with marbled paper sides blue edges. With a small woodcut illustration surrounded by woodcut border decorations on the title-page and two full-page woodcut illustrations in the text. The text is set in Gothic type. 2 blank VII 120 ll. First German edition of an early post-incunable with beautiful woodcut illustrations. The work contains 37 sermons which are divided in five series arranged by subject matter. The first part considers human actions while the remaining ones centre around the four Last Things novissima namely death judgement heaven and hell. The final section reworks ideas of Saint Anselm 1033-1109 about the salvation of the soul. The woodcut illustrations aptly show Christ at the Last Judgement. The work is quite rare as we have not been able to find the present edition in any sales records of the past hundred years. The present work was originally an anonymous treatise from the 14th century called De consideratione novissimorum but was later attributed to Saint Bonaventure 1221-1274. Although the work does contain a few of Bonaventure's favourite phrases Constant and Zahora think it may instead have been written by Durand of Champagne late 13th- to early 14th century the most significant Franciscan preacher at the French royal court at the time. The treatise is part of a way of thinking that considers remembering the Last Things to be essential to pursuing a moral life as Ecclesiasticus 7:40 states that: "In all thy works remember thy last end and thou shalt never sin". Interest in the four Last Things expanded greatly after Gerard van Vliederhoven c.1340- 1402 a key figure in the Devotio Moderna movement in Utrecht composed the Cordiale quattuor novissimorum c. 1380. Dozens of editions of this text in both Latin and the vernacular were printed between 1471 and 1505. It is exactly during this time that Durand's treatise now republished as Bonaventure's sermons also became popular. The work was first published with the present title and arrangement in Paris in 1482 and many editions followed. The present work is the 7th edition overall but the first printed in Germany. There is a nearly identical edition also printed by Cornelius van Zierickzee in the same year. The only difference between the two is a printing mistake on the title page "eidti" instead of "editi". The present work does not contain the mistake and thus is likely the second issue. With later annotations on the second free flyleaf in two different hands "Inc. XI J 19-20" and "Mauius or Marius - Deigl 1800" a crossed out annotation at the head of the title-page and an oval blue library stamp near the foot of the title-page. The marbled paper on the boards is somewhat rubbed the foot margin has been cut short slightly affecting the title page and final leaf the blank leaf after the introduction is lacking. Otherwise in good condition.l BMC German p. 141; BSB-Ink B-639; GW IV Sp. 479a; Goff B947; Hain 3525; ISTC ib00947000 12 copies; Proctor 1514; USTC 693462 8 copies; VD16 B6579; WorldCat 162367876 1068412909 248319224 1029604289 734189726 10 copies; cf.
