1903Best.-Nr. 134611903. Rouault Georges. whose work is often associated with Fauvism and Expressionism. Autograph Letter Signed circa 1903 a significant early document from the formative years of a central figure in modern French art that illuminates his transition from student of Symbolism to institutional guardian of Gustave Moreau's artistic legacy. Written on the eve of his departure from Paris and addressed to an unnamed correspondent the letter situates Rouault directly within the intellectual and pedagogical world of the École des Beaux-Arts and in close association with his mentor Gustave Moreau under whom he studied and to whom he remained profoundly devoted. Rouault writes with urgency "Dear sir I am leaving and I wanted to make absolutely sure that this will reach you and your cousin. Your cousin I am sure will be happy to have it" and refers explicitly to "the souvenirs you requested regarding the École des Beaux-Arts and on Gustave Moreau and others" requesting confirmation "before the end of the day so I can give them to you personally. I am leaving Paris for a while." Composed during a period of personal and artistic crisis between roughly 1902 and 1904 the letter documents Rouault at a pivotal juncture as he withdrew from Parisian life while consolidating his intellectual inheritance from Symbolism. Rouault Georges. Autograph Letter Signed. No place no date circa 1903. One page written on recto and verso approximately 8 1/4 x 10 5/8 inches entirely in Rouault's hand and signed "Georges Rouault." On the verso Rouault adds a revealing postscript that sheds light on his early curatorial and editorial concerns: "If you would prefer to keep the originals you can do this on the condition that it would be very exact copies and reviewed very carefully even if the brochure seems not in order as far as the syntax. aside from the spelling mistakes that you are authorized to correct." This language acquires particular historical weight in light of Rouault's appointment in 1902 as the first curator of the Musée Gustave Moreau established in Moreau's former residence and bequeathed to the French nation. The references to "originals" "exact copies" and an imperfect "brochure" strongly suggest his involvement in preparing or reviewing early institutional materials associated with the museum's formative years decades before his later publication Souvenirs Intimes in 1926. The letter therefore functions not merely as personal correspondence but as documentary evidence of Rouault's active role in shaping the posthumous reception of Moreau and the institutional consolidation of French Symbolism at the turn of the twentieth century. Minor handling wear and light natural aging to the paper; text remains fully legible with a clear well-preserved signature. Overall condition: very good. unknown

This was the first full-scale monograph on Resnick's work, which resulted from an acquaintance that Cathcart initiated with Resnick when she discovered that no-one had written extensively about his work. Resnick (1917- 2004) is one of the major artists in the first generation of abstract expressionists, who became active just after the second World War. He was in Paris in the late 1940's along with Philip Guston, de Kooning, and the critic Harold Rosenberg. Later he was a regular at the Cedar Tavern and the 8th Street Club. His reputation slowly rose during the late 1950's and early 1960's as major museums began to take notice of his work. He never achieved real name recognition and by the late 1970's had retired from the scene, though still very actively painting. Cathcart helped resuscitate interest in him again with this monograph. About 53 works in the exhibition. Illustrated in color and black & white with a number of fold-outs. Statement by the artist. Extensive chronology. Selected One Artist Exhibitions and Reviews. NUMBER ONE OF ONLY TEN SETS OF THIS OUTSTANDING PORTFOLIO OF EXPRESSIONIST ETCHINGS, WITH MANY OF THE ETCHINGS PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER. In 1918 German novelist Hans Bethge wrote "Satuila oder vom Zauber der Suedsee" ("Satuila or the Enchantment of the South Sea"), the story of a young woman in Samoa. It is a sensual, escapist tale: the situation in Germany was quite terrible after the defeat in WWI, and there was great demand for escapism. This novel was a hit, and a deluxe edition, with 6 original etchings by German Expressionist artist Georg Alexander Mathey, was published in Berlin in 1921. The etchings are extremely beautiful, perfectly capturing the lush sensuality of the landscape and the unabashed sexuality of the characters (similar to the depictions of Gypsies by Otto Mueller, from about the same time). This edition of the novel was limited to 250 copies. Aside from the book edition, 10 sets of the etchings were printed, with large margins. In these 10 sets, each of the etchings is signed and numbered by the artist. I OFFER ONE OF THESE 10 SETS: SET NUMBER 1, with each of the etchings numbered 1/10 and signed in pencil by the artist. FOUR OF THE SIX ETCHINGS IN THIS SET ARE PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER, AND ARE PERHAPS UNIQUE AS SUCH. Additionally, there is a signed working proof of an early version of one of the etchings, also printed on old Japanese paper. This proof is probably unique, as the etching was never published. The set is as it was issued. Each etching (sheet size 8 1/2 x 7 inches--22 x 18 cm) is individually matted, and the original parchment-backed cloth portfolio case (16 1/2 x 13 inches--42 x 33 cm). There is a little light wear to the portfolio, but the etchings are fine and bright. An important and extremely rare item (and perhaps the only German Expressionist depictions of the South Pacific!)
