1933rif. 5493171933. Unbound. Fine. Broadside. Yellow quarto sheet printed recto only. Folded twice and with a very tiny stain else fine. A statement prepared by Salvador Dali before his arrival in New York in anticipation of his first solo exhibition at the Lucien Levy Gallery from November 21 to December 8 1933. The statement quotes fellow surrealist and later antagonist Andre Breton includes Dali's denial as to the meaning of his works: "I never have the slightest idea what my pictures mean"; how after painting his wife one autumn afternoon he was "finally able to attain images sufficiently lucid and 'appetizing' for exhibition in New York"; and ending with a final question; "New York: why why did you erect my statue long ago long before I was born higher than another more desperate than another" Confusion about this statement abounds with some claiming the broadside was distributed at the 1939 World's Fair where Dali had a pavilion or later in 1941 calling it a response to criticism from a statement by Breton. Our research - and Dali's own printed words "I have never been to America" - supports Dali biographer Ian Gibson's belief that this broadside was issued in late 1933 as advance publicity for the painter's first solo American exhibition close on the heels of increased interest in the artist following the Surrealist show the year before that debut his icon painting The Persistence of Memory. Rare. OCLC locates two copies and we have located at third the Queen's Public Library in New York. unknown
1942rif. DALISALV001703Dial Press New York. 1942. First U.S. edition. Translated by Haakon Chevalier. Quarto. 400 pages. Black and white illustrations by the author. Buckram covers with pictorial labels on front and spine. From the library of publisher Peter Owen flamboyantly inscribed to him in blue ink on the half-title page by the author: ''Pour Peter OWEN Hommage de Dali 1972''. A line from the inscription carries over to the facing page where Dali has drawn a stylised Don Quixote in a desert landscape. The prelims of the book are mocked up by use of printed slips and Tippex for Peter Owen's edition of the book which appeared under his family's Vision Press imprint in 1948 this copy was evidently also used for the second and third editions. The inscription and drawing are most likely to have been made when Owen made one of his three visits to Dali in Spain to discuss copyright of the revised English edition of Dali's novel Hidden Faces which Owen published in 1973.Good only - has received some rough handling see above. No dustwrapper. Dial Press, New York. hardcover
