Claude Monet, esponente centrale dell'Impressionismo, ha influenzato il suo tempo ed è stato capace di definire il futuro dell'arte per merito dei suoi capolavori. Pubblicato in collaborazione con il Musée Marmottan Monet di Parigi, da cui proviene l'intero corpus di opere, e curato da Marianne Mathieu, storica dell'arte e direttrice scientifica del Museo, il volume introduce alla scoperta di opere chiave dell'Impressionismo e della produzione artistica di Monet sul tema della riflessione della luce e dei suoi mutamenti nell'opera stessa dell'artista, l'alfa e l'omega del suo approccio artistico. Oltre cinquanta le opere di Monet tra cui capolavori come La spiaggia di Trouville (1870), Passeggiata vicino ad Argenteuil (1875), Il ponte di Charing Cross (1899-1901), le sue Ninfee (1916-1919), Londra. Il Parlamento. Riflessi sul Tamigi (1905) e Le rose (1925-1926), la sua ultima e magica opera. Il percorso cronologico ripercorre l'intera parabola artistica del maestro impressionista, letta attraverso le opere che l'artista stesso considerava fondamentali, private, tanto da custodirle gelosamente nella sua abitazione di Giverny; opere che lui stesso non volle mai vendere e che ci raccontano le più grandi emozioni legate al suo genio artistico.

Tra tutti gli impressionisti fu lui a rimanere sempre totalmente aderente al principio di fedeltà assoluta alla sensazione visiva, dipingendo direttamente l'oggetto sulla tela. Dopo un esordio all'insegna del realismo courbettiano negli anni sessanta dell'Ottocento, i dipinti di Monet mostrano la cifra più pura dell'Impressionismo, prima di dare vita, inizialmente tramite uno sguardo sempre più acuto e penetrante, poi attraverso una libertà e un lirismo sempre più marcati, a un intero capitolo dell'arte del XX secolo.
