Scarce. The Perls Gallery in New York was founded in 1937 by Klaus Gunther Perls 1912-2008 and his brother Franz R. Perls1910-1975 after having worked at their mother's Galerie Kate Perls in Paris. Following his marriage to Amelia Blumenthal of Philadelphia in 1940 Klaus and Amelia B. Perls jointly ran the gallery. He originally dealt in works by Maurice Utrillo Maurice de Vlaminck and Raoul Dufy that his mother sent from Paris until the Nazi occupation. When she was forced to flee France he began dealing in now little known contemporary American artists including Darrel Austin and in Mexican and South American art such as Mario Carreno. After the war Klaus again dealt in French art from the School of Paris.Artists in the Perls' stable included Rouault Picasso Léger Derain Dufy Matisse Modigliani Pascin Soutine and Vlaminck. 1955réf. 510473Harcourt Brace and Company 1955. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. FINE/Very Good. First American Edition printed in Paris. Large 4to sewn binding in Braque's own lithographic paper-over-board covers. Unpaginated with 20 full-page color lithographs many of wich were original creations for the Verve issue. FINE copy exceedingly clean and sharp with crisp clean pages and tight square binding; DJ edges worn with some tears now wrapped in mylar. From the colophon: 'The illustrations in this volume are reproduced from the sketch-books - carnets de travail - which Georges BRAQUE has been keeping up for thirty years and more and which constitute a daily record of fragments of the visible world that have caught his attention and ideas for paintings that have occurred to him. In fact the only difference between these sketch-books and the diaries kept by so many writers is that here the entries are not written but take the form of gouache or watercolor sketches. Hitherto Braque has always refused to make public these albums which be takes with him wherever be goes and which comprise the bulk of his work as a draftsman. Now at long last be has authorized the reproduction of a number of pages of these albums selected by himself with our co-operation. This book whose cover has been specially designed by Braque himself constitutes a double number 31-32 of VERVE in the French edition. The American Edition is published by HARCOURT BRACE and Company New York. It has been reproduced under the direction of Teriade by the Master Printers DRAEGER Frères as for the heliogravures in colors and in black and by MOURLOT Frères for the lithography in colors. Printing was completed in Paris 1955 on the 20th day of September.'. Harcourt, Brace and Company hardcover
1937réf. 510540Verve 1937. First Edition. Paperback. FINE. Complete run of the first four issues of Teriade's legendary art magazine. Beginning with a stunning cover produced by Matisse for the first issue Verve would incorporate fresh artwork into its cover designed newly commissioned by artists such as Miro Picasso Chagall and other leading lights of the French art world. Each issue offered spectacular color lithographs printed by the Paris lithographers Mourlot. Early issues came in litho-printed card wrappers in boxes later volumes would be in paper-over board with litho covers. This choce allowed Teriade to feature the fresh lithographic artwork in the cover design but left the books themselves extremely fragile and succeptible to wear. Additionally the full-page lithographs have been continuous targets for art dealers looking to excise the plates. So condition seen here is quite rare with each volume preserved COMPLETE FINE with no signs of the wear and toning so commonly seen. 'The cover of Verve No. 1 is by Henri Matisse; it consists of three unmodulated colors--red blue and black--that the master cut directly from printers' ink specimen books. . Mattisse's cover for the first issue lithographed by Fernand Mourlot printers was an original work of art created expressly for the magazine--as would be practically all of the Verve's covers. . The painter took great pains to make sure that the cover would turn out exactly as he wished. . THe care Matisse lavished on what others might consider a minor undertaking was one of the hallmarks of Teriade's publications. How did he induce the greatest artists of this century to give the very best of themelves . Matisse and Teriade shared a common ideal. For both of them painting was life itself.' Michel Antonioz VERVE: The Ultimate Review of Art and Literature 35-36. Verve paperback
1940réf. 510631Editions de la Revue Verve 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. FINE/NEAR FINE. First American Edition with tipped in 'Occupation of Paris' notice. Tall 4to 35.5cm. sewn binding in Henri Matisse-designed lighograph printed cover on black paper over cards often mistaken for the DJ itself with original brown kraft paper lithographed dust jacket. The dust jacket was often treated as a throwaway especially since it was taped over making it impossible to see the beautiful Matisse covers without tearing it; they are quite uncommonly seen. We have not attempted removing the dust jacket here though we have supplied a photograph from another copy showing the design. This is a unique opportunity to for a collector to have not only a copy of the book as issued with the jacket but a uniquely clean and fresh copy of the cover itself entombed within the protection of the jacket. The book itself is exceedingly clean and sharp. Illustrated throughout in color and black and white with contributions from Verve's usual suspects: Matisse Miro Picasso Rouault Braque and a spectacular center-fold lithograph by Pierre Bonnard. In spite of the statement in the 'Occupation notice that half the American edition was lost this is not a terribly scarce book -- perhaps because subscribers immediately recognized the significance of what it represented namely the destruction of the thriving modern art movement in France at the hands of the neo-classical obsessed Nazis. But the jacket and condition make this an uncommon survival. Editions de la Revue Verve hardcover
