1957rif. 190907Paris: Éditions Louise Leiris 1957. Signed limited edition number 96 of 100 copies signed by Picasso. Printed by Mourlot Paris this complete set of Picasso's 8 portraits of French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac is accompanied by text by French surealist writer Michel Leiris. In 1927 Picasso was commissioned by publisher Ambroise Vollard to do a series of illustrations for Balzac's novella Le Chef-d'uvre inconnu The Unknown Masterpiece. First published in 1831 in the newspaper L'Artiste under the title Maître Frenhofer Master Frenhofer the story tells of an obsessive painter who has toiled over his magnum opus for ten years. When he finally unveils the finished work his fellow artists fail to be impressed and Frenhofer driven mad by his masterpiece burns the artwork and kills himself later that night. Frenhofer's plight clearly resonated with artists. Cezanne supposedly once lamented "Frenhofer c'est moi!" However Picasso's obsession with the tale went one step further. He even claimed that he was being haunted by the ghost of Balzac and in 1937 chose the address believed to have been the setting of the opening scene of Le Chef-d'uvre inconnu to be his new studio. Ironically it was there that Picasso produced what is widely regarded to be his own chef-d'uvre Guernica. These eight portraits of Balzac created in 1952 and published five years later are testimony to Picasso's enduring obsession and deep admiration for the writer. 8 transfer lithographs on Velin d'Arches. Loose as issued in original beige cloth portfolio with ties and black lettering to spine. Some gentle toning and minor foxing to a few leaves mainly confined to the edges. Overall the prints are clean and bright in a very good portfolio. hardcover
1933rif. 8090London: Oxford University Press 1933. First edition in English. Very Good. One of a hundred copies signed by Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso on the limitation page and with the Oxford University Press typewritten publication announcement laid in. A Very Good copy. With two plates: a frontispiece by Picasso designed specifically for this edition and a photo reproduction of Cocteau in costume as Huertebise. Publisher's black cloth elegantly rebacked in white leather. Boards and spine titled in gilt. Slight wear to edges of boards and some foxing mostly to preliminaries. Orphée Jean Cocteau's retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice was first performed in French in Paris in 1926. This Oxford University Press edition was the first publication of the play in English and the first to feature the frontispiece by Picasso which was designed for this edition and features an abstract portrait of Orpheus with a lyre. The publication announcement reads "For this English edition Picasso has done a frontispiece and for that reason alone should make of this book a production of unique importance. The fact that for 12/6 purchasers can own the signature of both Cocteau and Picasso ought to guarantee the rapid exhaustion of the limited copies." Cocteau loosely adapted Orphée into the 1950 film Orpheus. The film became the second part of his Orphic Trilogy preceded by The Blood of a Poet 1930 and followed by Testament of Orpheus 1960. Orpheus remains Cocteau's most acclaimed film . "Orphée should appeal strongly to all who delight in finding the joy of new artistic vision and expression. The play is unlike anything that has been done before. It would be foolish to pretend that Orphée is everyone's meat. But everyone ought to experiment and see at least whether it is his" publication announcement. Very Good. Oxford University Press unknown
