Elegantly wood Framed & Glazed with carefully coordinated quad matting. A curious relatively early letter about housekeeping at his villa and studio - a private matter - boldly signed. A very handsome presentation. Can be purchased without frame if requested. English translation: "My dear friend I have received your enclosed letter from Hannigou and I'm forwarding it to you that it might be a use. I have written asking the Notary to replace one of the beds of the villa behind with an iron one . . . and to get rid of the sofa in the workshop which like the bed has bedbugs. See to it that he responds. I would have liked to have gone to see you to tell you all this but I haven't had time today and I believe the situation is pressing. In Friendship and all the best H. Matisse 1/03/1909" Matisse was a French artist known for his use of colour & his fluid brilliant & original draughtsmanship. As a printmaker & sculptor but principally as a painter Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the 20th century. Although he was initially labeled as a Fauve wild beast by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting.1 His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art. "It was a great idea to bring them together; celebrities of the same generation of similar virtuosity" Wheeler 15. The 26 beautiful full-page illustrations by Matisse accompany the text of Joyce's Ulysses including six soft-ground etchings with reproductions of the sketches on blue and yellow paper. "One of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. According to George Macy this work's designer who undertook this only American publication of Matisse's illustrations he asked the artist how many etchings the latter could provide for $5000. The artist chose to take six subjects from Homer's Odyssey. The preparatory drawings reproduced with the soft-ground etchings Matisse's only use of this medium record the evolution of the figures from vigorous sketches to closely knit compositions" Artist and the Book 197. 1920rif. 2907Paris: The Author Matisse 1920. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION WITH SIGNED MATISSE ETCHING. A BEAUTIFUL COPY. Cinquante Dessins is “a book of drawings published at Matisse’s expense with an introduction by Charles Vildrac. Vildrac explains Matisse’s return to the figure as an attempt to redress the modernist gap opened between art and life. Since the figure was neglected by contemporary art concerned with the probing and reconstitution of the painting elements themselves Matisse is returning to the ‘moral character’ of painting its human content. Like the older masters he again ‘attunes his style to the style of the model’ and eschewing both the current archaizing and modishness he searches out with humility the grave character of the model by intelligent deduction and by imagination. Written in close collaboration with the painter this is an important statement on Matisse’s Nice manner of the early 1920s.” Weiss 97. With 50 full-page plates of Matisse’s drawings of women in addition to the frontispiece etching of Matisse’s daughter “Mlle. M.M” signed in ink by Matisse below the image. Produced to coincide with Matisse’s exhibition of the drawings at Bernheim-Jeune in 1920. One of 1000 copies issued although in most extant copies the signed frontispiece has now been removed. With preface by Charles Vildrac. Paris: The Author 1920. Quarto approx. 8 1/2 x 12 in. original wrappers; custom box. Splits to text block as usual and with the usual light uniform toning from the tissue guards. The original wrappers in particular the spine are notoriously fragile – this copy is a very rare survival with the wrappers in nearly perfect condition.
