Don Vasco who distinguished himself in the service of the Spanish Crown in Mexico proclaims his humility before the office of his charge never before entrusted to a military man and invokes education as an antidote to envy hate revenge and thoughts of theft lies and deception. He also challenges the need for capital punishment and other legal injustices. The recipient of the prize was a woman Maria Elana Diez. This is very likely María Elena Diaz Suarez 1931-2022 "an accomplished educated well-read woman. She was a top student at the University of Havana until her education was disrupted by the Cuban Revolution. She finished her undergraduate degree at Montclair State University in the 1970s. She then went to work at the Bell Company compiling information for the voluminous telephone books that were a staple of every home in that era" see her loving and interesting obituary at: www.megaromemorialhome.com/obituaries/Maria-Elena-DiazobId=26758616 for an account of her politically active life in Cuba before arriving in the U.S. in 1966. Don Tomás Estrada Palma 1835-1908 was a prominent Cuban politician military leader and the first President of Cuba 1902-1906. This copy lacks the portrait and the one-page testimonial to Gerardo Machado y Morales the Cuban president at the time this book was published and presumably lacking on purpose. Machado y Morales was a general of the Cuban War of Independence and President of Cuba from 1925 to 1933. A putative dictator he "won a non-democratic election where the opposition was repressed. As protests and rebellions became more strident his administration curtailed free speech and imprisoned exiled and murdered Machado's opponents . Ultimately in 1933 Machado was forced to step down" Wikipedia. The missing portrait and testimonial whether at the hands of Ms. Diaz or not and the high-school prize stamp for a politically active Cuban woman give this book a bit of added interest. 1894ref. 227381894. Mexico Anthropology Delorme Salto Rafael. Los aborígenes de América: disquisiciones acerca del asiento origen historia y adelanto en la esfera científica de las sociedades precolombinas. Madrid: Librería de Fernando Fé / Habana: La Propaganda Literaria 1894. First edition. With a prologue by General D. Vicente Riva-Palacio y Guerrero Mexican Minister Plenipotentiary to Spain. 8vo. Finely bound in later full red morocco with gilt rules and spine lettering marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Text in Spanish. A scarce anthropological treatise exploring pre-Columbian civilization through the lens of 19th-century scientific humanism authored by Spanish scholar Rafael Delorme Salto. Los aborígenes de América situates Indigenous American societies within a framework of comparative anthropology and early evolutionary theory attempting to reconcile European Enlightenment models of progress with Mesoamerican and Andean achievements in astronomy architecture and mathematics. Delorme writes admiringly of the "inteligencia" and "fuerza reflexiva" of early American peoples treating the Americas not as derivative cultures but as civilizations of independent scientific advancement. The work's prologue by Vicente Riva-Palacio a liberal general novelist and diplomat associated with Mexican nation-building intellectuals frames the book within transatlantic dialogue on indigeneity and modernity offering rare evidence of late 19th-century Spanish and Mexican collaboration in re-evaluating the legacies of conquest and colonial knowledge. Mild toning to some pages a 2" loss to the introduction page and mild foxing to margins else clean and tightly bound. Overall very good condition. A rare volume highlighting the intersection of Iberian anthropology and Mexican nationalism in the intellectual reappraisal of Indigenous America at the close of the 19th century. unknown books

Vol.1 contains the text of Oedipus Rex "Oedipe Roi" in French and a significant portion of Raphaël Freida's original engravings and drawings integrated directly with the text. This integration is vital as Freida's artwork is not merely decorative; it serves to amplify the emotional intensity and psychological depth of the tragedy. The quality of the printing and the paper in this volume are of high importance. Volume 2 "États des Planches" States of the Plates is dedicated to showcasing the "states of the plates" providing a detailed look at the various stages of the engraving process allowing the viewer to observe the evolution of Freida's artwork from initial sketches to finished gorgeous engravings. This volume is of particular interest to those interested in the technical aspects of printmaking. It should be noted that surprisingly Freida's powerful illustrated edition has never been subsequently reissued.
