1863rif. 2935Cali: 26 de Mayo 1863. Very good. Small broadside 8 x 5.75 inches. Scattered foxing; light toning. This broadside announces the exile of the Franciscans from Cali and the Republic of Colombia for their failure to comply with new laws concerning taxes on religious orders. Interestingly this is signed by the Guardian of the Franciscans himself Rafael Ortiz who urges the citizens of Cali to pray for the order and to fend for themselves under a vain perfidious and deceitful government. 1855rif. 2763Guatemala 1855. Fair. 3pp. on a bifolium. Small folio. Leaves no longer integral. Heavy chipping and wear at edges quarter-sized hole through upper center of both leaves but only a small amount of text actually affected. Moderate tanning and soiling. A scarce 1855 broadside in which Guatemalan caudillo Rafael Carrera addresses Hondurans regarding the perceived malign intentions of their president José Trinidad Cabañas. Honduras with Cabañas at the helm had been in conflict with Guatemala since 1853 and it was Cabañas' stated goal to reunite the states of the defunct Federal Republic of Central America to which end he also invaded Nicaragua in 1854. In this address Carrera states the need to invade Honduras in order to halt the aggressions of Cabañas reiterates his desire for peace and friendship with "true" Hondurans and promises his assistance in reestablishing a reasonable government in their country. Original half-leather with paper-covered boards and marbled endpapers; 375 iv pp. Minor abrasions and wear especially to extremities of binding some hand-written notations to front flyleaf one folding plate with tear along one crease overall very good. Second edition of the 19th century work on Islamic architecture in Moorish Spain including the Alhambra of Granada the Real Alcázar of Sevilla and the Gran Mezquita or Grand Mosque of Córdoba. The Spanish-language text begins with an introduction to art in Spain followed by a brief chapter covering the comparable characteristics of various monuments and three longer sections one on each of the featured monuments. There are scattered illustrations throughout the text including elevations details and floor plans along with two large folding plates. The first is a floor plan of the Palacio Arabe at the Alhambra and the second is an overall plan or map of the Alhambra y Generalife. Rafale Contreras 1824-1890 was the head restorer of the Alhambra appointed by Queen Isabella II and who carried out a major restoration in the Nasrid palace between 1847 and 1889. He was preceded in his position by his father José and succeeded by his son Mariano making the Contreras family in charge of restorations at the palace from 1840 through 1907. Rafael was appointed after presenting the Queen with a three-dimensional scale model of the Hall of the Two Sisters with a goal of his restoration being to change the look of the Alhambra to one that was more "Oriental" in style. He focused only on the wall surfaces substituting original decorations with newer plaster casts. Some of the Contreras' restorations were quite controversial including the complete demolition of the Sala de Camas and the conversion of several gabled roofs into colorful tiled domes. Many of the walls were in a state of ruin lacking any original decoration and the Contreras family decided to fill in the gaps with decorative motifs which did not necessarily belong. Rafael Contreras also created a successful business seizing upon the influx of visitors to the Alhambra. He created architectural scale models and plaster casts of the Alhambra in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms which he sold as souvenirs. 1876rif. 5735Chalchuapa El Salvador 1876. Still very good. 3pp. on a bifolium. Folio. Crinkling and minor wear at edges. Faint dampstain to upper right corner. The president of Guatemala Justo Rufino Barrios invaded El Salvador in 1876 following the presidential election there. Barrios suspected that both the elected and former presidents had been harboring Guatemalan opponents to his regime and hope to install someone more favorable. The present "political plan" for El Salvador reads more as an indictment of the two leaders Santiago Gonzalez and Andres del Valle than an as organizing document for a new government. The first signer here is Rafael Zaldivar the choice of Barrios for next president of El Salvador and the work was printed in the field at Chalchuapa on April 10 1876 approximately one week before the decisive battles that forced the capitulation of the Salvadoran government. "This essay is intended as a foundation for belief in revealed religion in connection with the theory of celestial influences or astrology." Richard James Morrison 15 June 1795 - 5 April 1874 was an English astrologer commonly known by his pen name Zadkiel and best known for the series known as Zadkiel's Almanac. Morrison in 1831 issued The Herald of Astrology subsequently known as Zadkiel's Almanac. In this annual pamphlet he published predictions of the chief events of the coming year. Morrison wrote with the signature Zadkiel Tao-Sze. Morrison wrote such articles as The New Principia or true system of astronomy in which the Earth is proved to be the stationary centre of the Solar System 1868 which made him a charlatan in the eyes of scientists. In 1863 he won a libel suite against Admiral Sir Edward Belcher who wrote in the Daily Telegraph that Morrison was "the crystal globe seer who gulled many of our nobility about the year 1852." He was awarded twenty shillings one pound damages but was deprived of his costs. The Athenaeum 16 May 1874 p. 666 noted that Morrison was "the restorer and Grand Master in this country of Tao-Sze a secret society intended to be of immense power and to outshine the Free-masons but which most probably by his death is reduced to two members and inanition". "In presenting this book to our readers we intend to give them the picture of the Jewish world in Eastern Europe as it existed during the 1920's and 1930's previous to the Second World War. This world does not exist any longer. It is a vanished world the world of East European Jewry that world in which for centuries the greatest concentration of Jewish people in history lived and worked. On the eve of the Second World War over seven million Jews resided in that part of Eastern Europe which was swept by Hitler's divisions in the years 1939-45. If we also include sections of Southern and Western Europe the Balkans Italy France Belgium Holland and Scandinavia the Jewish population under Nazi rule may be estimated at approximately 7.8 million persons. More than 9400000 Jews lived in the whole of Europe in 1939. Only about 3700000 are left now including the "Displaced Persons" in the UNRRA camps and those repatriated from Soviet Russia and Poland. Five million of these were exterminated in the death camps and the ghettos. About seven hundred thousand perished from starvation deportation epidemics and as a result of military operations. The East European period of Jewish history ended in the greatest catastrophe known to mankind." Raphael Abramovitch was a 20th century Russian Jewish political activist. As a Marxist he was part of the Jewish Bund. He took part in the Russian Revolution on the side of the Mensheviks. After the Bolshevik victory he fled to Germany France and eventually to the United States. Abramovitch was a vocal opponent of both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
