Description: "Noted British art critic Denys Sutton has produced a praiseworthy monograph on the enigmatic but illustrious master. Degas fits no category though he exhibited with the Impressionists whose color and movement he embraced even while deploring the term itself. Among such giants as Monet and Renoir Degas holds his own. He did not abandon the linear tradition exemplified by Ingres but progressed from perceptive family portraits and historical pictures to the real world of the racetrack the theater and especially the ballet. This monumental book vividly develops the personality of Degas and analyzes his work partly through previously unpublished extracts of his correspondence. One hundred superior color reproductions plus 194 black-and-white illustrations and photographs enhance this all-inclusive critique and biography. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 280 pages; 267 illus. 166 color. -- with a bonus offer--; Edgar Degas is best known for his luminous studies of dancers. He captured his young female subjects warming up practicing at the bar or mid-performance with a stunning immediacy and accuracy on canvas paper and in bronze. Although Degas did not consider himself part of the Impressionist movement he is often viewed in that context. This sumptuously illustrated book offers a new framework establishing Degas as a thoroughly modern artist who was engaged with and influenced by the then-new mediums of photography and film. Using drawings pastels paintings prints sculpture photographs taken by the artist and his contemporaries and samples of film from the period renowned Degas scholars Richard Kendall and Jill DeVonyar examine the artist’s innovative approach to the subject from his documentary mode of the early 1870s to the sensuous and expressive manner of his late work. . 2011. 1905711689 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- Text in English. 96 pp. With 41 ills. 26 x 18 cm. -- with a bonus offer--; Murphy Lecture Series; The Body in Time looks at two different genres in relation to the construction of femininity in late nineteenth-century France: Degas's representation of ballet dancers and the transforming tradition of female portraiture. Class gender power and agency are at stake in both arenas but they play themselves out in different ways via different pictorial languages. Degas's depictions of anonymous young female ballerinas at the Paris Opera reflect his fascination with the physical exertions and prosaic setting of the dancer's sexualized body. Unlike the standard Romantic depictions of the ballerina Degas's dancers are anonymous spread-legged workers on public display. Female portraiture and self-portraiture in contrast depicted the unique and the distinctive: privileged women self-assured individuals transgressing gender conventions. Focusing on Degas's representation of the dancer Tamar Garb examines the development of Degas's oeuvre from its early Realist documentary ambitions to the abstracted Symbolist renderings of the feminine as cypher in his later works. She argues that despite the apparent depletion of social significance and specificity Degas's later works remain deeply enmeshed in contemporary gendered ways of viewing and experiencing art and life. Garb also looks at the transformation in the genre of portraiture heralded by the "new woman" examining the historical expectations of female portraiture and demonstrating how these expectations are challenged by new notions of female autonomy and interiority. Women artists such as Anna Klumpke Rosa Bonheur and Anna Bilinska deployed the language of Realism in their own self-representation. The figure of femininity remained central to the personal political and pictorial imperatives of artists across the spectrum of modern aesthetics. Gender and genre intersect throughout this book to show how these categories mutually impact one another. . 2008. 0295987936 . University of Washington Press paperback
