L’autore analizza con rigore filologico i singoli momenti, fornendo ampie notizie e informazioni su contesti storici e personalità, fra le quali non emergono solo i maestri più importanti ma anche i cosiddetti "minori", di cui il volume testimonia il contributo decisivo. Una Storia della pittura napoletana, ricca di documentazione inedita, da leggere tutta d’un fiato, o da consultare - con l’ausilio degli indici, delle note e del repertorio bibliografico - come base insostituibile per ulteriori approfondimenti. Rosario Pinto Si occupa di storia dell’arte e di critica d’arte. Impegnato attivamente nella tutela dei beni culturali, ha curato numerosi convegni, tra i quali si segnala 1992 – Arte senza frontiere tenutosi a Villa Pignatelli a Napoli. Tra le sue pubblicazioni, i volumi Tappe dell’arte napoletana, Napoli 1994, Arte napoletana nei secoli, Napoli 1995, Storia della pittura napoletana, Napoli 1997, La pittura nel Salernitano attraverso i secoli, Napoli 1997, nonché diversi saggi di pittura napoletana e meridionale (sulla pittura aurunca, su G. da Gaeta, G. da Nola, G. Marullo, D.A. Vaccaro, A. Mozzillo, sulla pittura femminile a Napoli dal ’500 al ’700, su S. Anguisola e A. Gentileschi, sull’iconografia di S.G. Giuseppe della Croce, dei Calvari e dei Trionfi della morte). Ha presentato, inoltre, mostre ed eventi di arte contemporanea, curandone i relativi cataloghi.
