1816réf. 850.1816London J. Coxhead 1816. Publisher's printed gray boards copy set within decorative borders; spine renewed with matching paper.Based upon Holbein's original 15th century designs Wenceslaus Hollar the Bohemian etcher born in Prague in 1607 created copper plates for his own Dance of Death. In 1647 an edition of 30 copperplates was brought out in London; another edition from these plates was published in 1651. The plates then disappeared from sight until the late 18th-early 19th centuries when several editions from the "newly discovered" plates began to appear. In this copy which appears "as issued" by the publisher the plate section is gathered together at the front just after the title-page and before the letterpress i.e. "The Life of Holbein" followed by an essay on the history of the dance of death called "The Dance of Death" is followed by "Descriptions of the Cuts in Hollar's Dance of Death" in English and French. At the end is a short essay entitled "The Dance of Macaber". Typically these copies in boards were handed over to bookbinders who before sewing the gatherings interleaved the descriptive text with the plates. It is HIGHLY UNCOMMON to find the work in the original boards in such an unsophisticated state. According to a notice on the boards the work was issued by Coxhead coloured for 25s and plain for 16s. 1804réf. 13945London: np 1804. Later Edition. Full Calf. Very Good. Later Edition. Full Calf. "Dance of Death": late-medieval allegory on the universality of death. With Hans Holbein the Younger the Danse macabre takes on a completely new artistic form. This depicts the brutal irruption of Death in work and the joy of living. This representation takes precedence over the idea that death spares no social class. In 1538 with the publication of Les simulacres de la Mort Hans Holbein the Younger redefines the theme of the danse macabre. Death always aggressive and jubilant no longer dances in a long farandole but intervenes directly in scenes of daily life. This is a series of 32 engraving with a folding plate which were originally executed around 1804. This edition has continuous pagination and is in English beginning with a divisional title: 'Descriptions of the cuts in Hollar's Dance of death.' The final part 'The Dance of Macaber.' Collation: A2-B-F8 Pagination: 281p1 32 plates 2 frontis 1 folding 29 engraved leaves. This copy also includes handwritten inscriptions on the plates of Biblical verses from Genesis on several leaves. Completely detached front board shaken rear rubbing/bumping to extremities otherwise a good copy. Full mottled tree calf with gilt spine/edging decorations. 4to. 81pp. Illus. b/w 32 unnumbered leaves of engravings with folding plate frontispieces. Annotations. Lacking a plate np unknown

1828In-4 gr.

Description: "The Jeypore Exhibition of 1883 was regarded as among the most important industrial exhibitions of 19th century where specimen of the best art work of India was curated. Credited to the arduous efforts of Thomas Holbein Hendley a British officer in the princely state of Jaipur the Exhibition was primarily an attempt to showcase local skills. A permanent 'memorial' of the Exhibition was produced as a four-part set of illustrated volumes authored by Hendley and commissioned by the visionary Maharaja of Jaipur. The first volume contained a number of chromo-lithographs and a general description of the plates in the first three books of the set. The second and third volumes contained 100 photographs of Indian art work while Volume IV also included reproductions in platinum of the illustrations of Emperor Akbar's own copy of the Razmanama the Persian epic. Published by W. H. Griggs some sets were presented to leading museums of the world and very few copies were sold.
