1829réf. 893861829. Fine. ""these two paintings morally bound by their subject can only be exhibited together"" 15 mai 1829 18.5 x 24 cm Deux pages sur une feuillet Autograph letter signed by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres to Charles Paillet with autograph address and title ""Honorary Expert Commissioner of the Royal Museums"" with postal stamps. Usual fold marks. A marginal tear repaired without affecting the text. Ingres provides descriptions and exhibition instructions for his two paintings Aretino and the Ambassador of Charles V and Aretino in the Studio of Tintoretto. Ingres had painted these two works in 1815 and presented them at the 1824 Salon in Parisselecting episodes from the romantic and scandalous life of Aretino: By choosing this subject Ingres affirms the independence of the artist in the face of power. He also reflects the widespread success in the early 19th century of representations of episodes from the lives of past painters and writers illustrated in an anecdotal mode. Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. This letter refers to the reappearance of the paintings in 1829 at an Exhibition in support of the fund for the eradication of begging held at the Lebrun Gallery founded by the late husband of Elizabeth Vigée-Lebrun. The descriptions given by Ingres in this letter would be published in the exhibition catalogue Explication des ouvrages de peinture et sculpture . Coniam 1829 pp. 2021. Ingres sends them here to the respected art dealer Charles Pailletwhile noting his status as an expert to the Louvre on the reverse of the letter. The works are now held in private collections Aretino and the Ambassador of Charles V was recently sold by the Stair Sainty Gallery. Ingres later revisited the subject and painted another version in 1848 now housed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. Fascinating letter revealing that Ingres himself authored the descriptions of his works for the 1829 exhibition. Sir I have the honour of sending you the notices for my two paintings on Pietro Aretino. These two paintings morally connected by their subject must be exhibited togetheralthough a single painting may separate them. I respectfully ask you sir to display them in the aisle opposite that of the Philip V painting. I will bring them myself when I come on the 24th to collect those that are to be withdrawn from the exhibition. I remain sir yours sincerely Ingres Subject of the first painting on Pietro Aretino known as the scourge of princes. Charles V on his return from Africa sent him a gold chain worth 100 ducats to silence him: There said the satirist is a very small gift for such great folly. Subject of the second painting Rivalry turned to jealousy had caused a rift between Tintoretto and Titian. Aretino a close friend of the latter took his side and unleashed his wrath against Tintoretto. One day Tintoretto met him near his home and invited him in under the pretext of painting his portrait. Hardly had the scourge of princes sat down when the painter approached him pistol in hand. Ah Jacopo cried the frightened poet what are you doing Taking your measurements replied Tintoretto gravely. And after measuring him he added in the same tone: You are two and a half of my pistols high and let him go. unknown

Portraits of political and intellectual figures from the 19th century. The majority of the illustrations are signed and dated in the plate. These reproductions were mostly done after works in private collections. A noted specialist on Ingres Henry Lapauze 1867-1925 notes in his introduction «Thus these fantastic portraits most of which are jealously guarded as family heirlooms or are the pride of private collections become a national treasure that all may look upon.» Lapauze's main goal was to allow a broader public to become better acquainted with Ingres' work at a time when culture was elevated into the ranks of the French national heritage by the Third Republic. It was thus that Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' 1780-1867 work once more awoke the interest of art historians and the general public at the turn of the 20th century. These one hundred portraits make up a visual gallery of Ingres' circle. Lapauze thinks it is of little importance whether or not readers are familiar with the people portrayed since the painter's genius is enough to get across the «master's glorious talent» and to ensure «the delight of people of good taste». Ingres is thus elevated into a genius of 19th century French painting. A very rare copy of the first edition of one hundred portrait drawings by Ingres. Chez J.-E. Bulloz hardcover

réf. 4663In a remarkable letter painter and teacher Jean Ingres illustrates how window light shines on the human figure. ".although the daylight comes from the right side of the painting the daylight coming from the left side should not be dismissed. If this is the case all the charm of the brush work will be lost." To clarify the artist sketches a figure as seen from the back with one foot resting on a step. Signed "Ingres. Written in French on one 8vo sheet undated. The letter is significant because it reveals the working artist considering the effect of light on a human subject. He draws two lines of light as they might contact the figure. Ingres would occasionally use pen and ink to sketch first ideas but in this instance it would seem that he used the pen to write the letter and illustrated his meaning with the drawing. The text suggests he may have been giving advice to another artist or student rather than sketching a preliminary drawing for his own work. Condition: Docketing in upper left corner in red in another hand sunning around margins likely from prior framing slight chipping on right margin and slight soiling at center fold. The illustrated letter measures 5.25 x 8 inches and floats on a dark gray mat overlaid with a white mat framed in black satin finished wood matted and framed in museum quality materials framed in 5/8/inch black satin wood. Frame measures 12.5 x 15.75. unknown
