T. H. Sadler Michael Sadleir. The first English-language edition of Über das Geistige in der Kunst Concerning the Spiritual in Art one of the foundational theoretical works of twentieth-century modernism in which Wassily Kandinsky articulated his revolutionary conception of painting as an expression of spiritual experience rather than the representation of the visible world.Published by Constable and Company in London in 1914 translated from the German with an introduction by M. T. H. Sadler later known as Michael Sadleir this edition helped introduce Kandinsky's artistic philosophy to an English-speaking readership at a formative moment in the development of abstract art. This copy is distinguished by a circular blind-embossed PRESENTATION COPY stamp on the title page consistent with the documented practice of Constable and Company of designating copies for presentation. Although the original recipient has not been identified the marking provides an unusual and historically interesting feature of this first English edition. No presentation inscription or signature by Kandinsky is present. The volume retains the publisher's original quarter-blue-cloth binding over marbled paper-covered boards with a reddish-brown gilt-lettered spine label and untrimmed edges. This is one of the recognised original binding variants of the 1914 edition an alternative issue having appeared in grey paper-covered boards. The marbled-board binding has sometimes been described by specialist booksellers as the deluxe issue although its formal designation as such has not been conclusively established.Kandinsky's text is divided into two principal parts About General Aesthetic and About Painting. Drawing upon music philosophy colour psychology and contemporary spiritual thought he advances the proposition that artistic form and colour possess an expressive life independent of the objects they depict. His concept of inner necessity places the artist's spiritual impulse at the centre of creative expression challenging the conventions of naturalistic representation and anticipating the emergence of non-objective painting.Illustrated with nine pictorial plates and three figure plates together with decorative illustrations within the text the volume preserves the visual material accompanying Kandinsky's theoretical arguments. An important first English edition of one of the defining manifestos of modern abstract art further distinguished by its publisher's presentation blindstamp and original marbled-board binding.PROVENANCEPublisher's Presentation Copy Constable and Company Limited London 1914.The title page bears a circular blind-embossed stamp reading PRESENTATION COPY apparently applied by the publisher.Constable and Company is known to have employed comparable presentation markings on other publications of the period supporting the attribution of this stamp to the publisher's presentation practice. The original recipient is unidentified and there is no evidence that the vo - For full description please contact the seller Constable and Company Limited hardcover
