1780rif. P3198Paris c.1780. some restoration otherwise good. Notes: Jean-Antoine Watteau French pronunciation: ʒan‿ɑ̃twan wato; October 10 1684 – July 18 1721 was a French painter whose brief career spurred the revival of interest in colour and movement in the tradition of Correggio and Rubens. He revitalized the waning Baroque style and indeed moved it to the less severe more naturalistic less formally classical Rococo. Watteau is credited with inventing the genre of fêtes galantes: scenes of bucolic and idyllic charm suffused with an air of theatricality. Some of his best known subjects were drawn from the world of Italian comedy and ballet. Jean-Antoine Watteau 1684-1721 was a noted French artist renowned for bringing renewed energy to the Baroque style. The engraver was Claude Du Bosc 1682-1746. The example in the Beard collection does not give a place of publication but may well be assumed to be London. Du Bosc is recorded as having moved to London with Claude Dupuis to help in engraving the Raphael cartoons at Hampton Court. He was to remain and set up business in his own name after the project was finished. V & A Harry Beard Collection S.5141-2009. c.1730 unknown
