This collection is important because it presents a different Gainsborough from the celebrated portraitist. With one ADDITIONAL illustration. The uncommon First Edition Collection of 72 Gainsborough Etchings of English Scenery 1805 oblong folio period style three quarter brown calf burgundy morocco spine label marbled boards. First edition of this beautiful collection of 72 etchings 30 hand tinted after Gainsborough sketches handsomely bound. Plates clean & fine dated 1802-1805 some watermarked 1801 binding fresh & lovely printed by Watts & Bridgewater Queen-st. A superb example of this rare edition. 270401 mm. Ray 74. Tooley 231. Acclaimed as the father of modern landscape & of modern pastoral DNB Gainsborough was also the favorite of British high society Janson History of Art 452. Wells & Laporte etched these plates from 1802-05. While the first edition of this volume calls for 71 plates this volume has one additional illustration: there are two different essays of the second plate. The less scarce later editions of this title contain only 60 plates. Although Gainsborough is celebrated primarily as one of Britain's greatest portrait painters landscape was his lifelong passion. He filled sketchbooks with studies of trees rocks cottages streams and animals often experimenting with unusual drawing materials and techniques. W.F. Wells 1762-1832, and J.
