Very good in tan boards with a green white and gilt art nouveau cover by Armstrong rubbing to the front cover and spine corners and edges somewhat worn contents near fine . First printing. An early novella by Storm originally published in German in 1850 and a masterpiece of German poetic realism with its delicate language and its atmospheric melancholic mood as it tells a bittersweet story of unfulfilled love through a man's nostalgic memories of his childhood sweetheart Elisabeth who married another. A lovely book illustrated with a full color frontispiece 8 full color plates illustrated initial letters at each chapter and decorative green borders on every page by sisters Margaret Neilson Armstrong 1867-1944 and Helen Maitland Armstrong 1869-1948. Translated from the German by George P. Upton; includes a translator's preface and an appreciation of Storm by Upton in which he notes that the theme of this book is lost youth and the symbol of it is the water lily. The water lily is the image used by Margaret Armstrong in the cover art on the endpapers one of the few examples of Armstrong illustrated endpapers and on the title page. Large octavo unpaginated.
