1833réf. ABC_50873Paris 1833. Ca. 36 x 56.2 cm. Aubert Under a white and gold passe-partout framed in a dark reddish brown wooden frame ca. 54 x 66.5 cm. Rare coloured lithograph of one of Honoré Daumiers 1808-1879 most celebrated and politically charged satires of the July Monarchy. The print was inspired by an incident at Le Bourget in 1833 when King Louis-Philippe 1773-1850 reportedly stopped his carriage to assist a postilion injured after being run over. Contemporary royalist newspapers praised the kings intervention as an act of exemplary humanity while opposition journals transformed the episode into a metaphor for the violence and hypocrisy of the regime.Daumiers composition turns the anecdote into a biting allegory of state repression. At left Louis-Philippe performs bloodletting on the wounded messenger symbolically bleeding the French nation itself. Beside him stands Ferdinand Duc dOrléans 1810-1842 holding a bottle of Médecine Leroy alluding to the suppression of the Lyon workers uprising of 1831. At right kneels Georges Mouton comte de Lobau 1770-1838 notorious for crushing the Paris republican insurrection of June 1832 armed with an enormous clyster syringe. The combined imagery presents the July Monarchy as a regime treating social unrest through political surgery and coercion rather than genuine reform. The title derives from Molières Le Malade imaginaire 1673 parodying the obsolete practices of academic medicine. Daumier uses the phrase to devastating satirical effect France is first bled then purged and finally subjected to yet another humiliating treatment.Executed at the height of Daumiers collaboration with Charles Philipons 1800-1861 satirical journals La Caricature and Le Charivari the lithograph exemplifies the artists extraordinary ability to merge caricature political commentary and monumental historical composition. The prints is somewhat browned ann stained with a vertical fold in the middle. Otherwise in good condition.l Daumier Register 73; WorldCat 770840451 1 copy. unknown
