Translated from the Occitan into French and prefaced by Jean-Bernard Mary-Lafon Occitan is a Romance language spoken in Southern France Monaco Italy and Spain. It has no standard written form and is endangered by language shift and decline. Sometimes also referred to as Provençal. from the TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE Here is another diamond from the poetic crown of our fathers which after five hundred and fifty years of dust and forgotten shines once again in the light of day. Too careless of its literary riches the France of today was no longer France of yesteryear had never given it a thought. We had a version or rather a crude imitation of the poem in the imitation of the poem in the manner of the story of the four Aymon sons. but this hasty and overly popular transfer onto gray paper rendered neither the meaning nor the color nor the energy nor strictly speaking of the original. Far more eager than France of going back to the sources of our Provençal poetry as early as 1533 Germany had treated the Fierabras novel. However this translation which which was reprinted in 1809 reproduced the incomplete text French manuscripts only approximately and imperfectly reflecting the admirable poem. A Castilian-language version of the poem existed in Spain in the language from which Cervantes drew the subject of one of the most comic episodes of his novel. The Italians have another entitled Romanzo di Fierabraccia e Olivieri Roman de Fierabras et d'Olivier; and the English have one as yet unpublished mentioned by George Ellis in his Extraits des romans de chevalerie Translated with DeepL. The deluxe edition printed in an edition of 40 copies specially bound accompanied by an original signed etching presented loose the etching numbered AP 2/10. Fine copy. This book provides illuminating insights into the development of the numerous themes expressed in the paintings and sculptures Australian artist David Rankin has created over recent decades. The richly illustrated pages in this book amply document this range of ideas. While Peter Carey's introduction offers important glimpses of Rankin's youth and earlier career in Australia Ashton develops this narrative and then extends her analysis into subsequent years after his marriage to poet Lily Brett and their move to a New York still redolent with the influence of Robert Motherwell Mark Rothko and many others about whom Ashton has written extensively. Dore Ashton's text is interspersed with extended quotes from the artist himself. These affirm the genesis of his art in a long-term investigation of Buddhist thinking and calligraphy and knowledge of Western literary sources such as the writings of James Joyce Primo Levi Walter Benjamin and poets like the American Wallace Stevens. Always sympathetic to politically conscious responses to tragedy as they are expressed in art Ashton admires this aspect of Rankin's work as it appears in series such as his Dona Nobis Pacem and Jerusalem Wall paintings and the more recent Enniskillen works which reflect on tragic events in Ireland which affected his own family. hardcover
