From the preface: "Over the centuries London has been visited by many artists from abroad and this exhibition is an attempt to illustrate how each visitor has in turn found inspiration from the city. The exhibition interprets this 'image' of London, reveals how the city has changed through four hundred years, and explores the idea of the city in the mind of the visitors and their response to it. Wyngaerde was the earlist artist to attempt to represent the city with relative accuracy. He conceived London as a great Gothic city with many towers and spires. Thomas Wyek may have witnessed the Great Fire, and he certainly painted several views of it. After the Fire, London was rapidly rebuilt and expanded. The subsequent completion of the new cathedral and the City's increasing commercial success attracted many traveller-artists. With its bustling market, Covent Garden was a favourite subject of the 18th-century artists such as Van Aken and Angillis. By contrast the serene Thames views of Canaletto and Joli recall Venice, and their interpretation of London as a city of grace and enlightenment seem more in keeping with the neo-classical order that fashioned the second half of the 18th Century. In the 19th Century artists began to depict the darker side of London. Focusing upon scenes of labour, poverty and suffering in an oppressive industrial environment, G?ricault and Dor? portrayed the Babylonian image of London. Nevertheless, Victorian London was also shown as a city of success and wealth. The river scenes of Whistler, and the busy, yet fashionable Street scenes of Bianche, Tissot and De Nittis represent it as essentially a hive of activity, business and busy-ness. Wistler and Monet were also inspired by the atmosphere of London, the foggy and nocturnal views ...

Top board with gilt text and tooled borders. Notes: A superbly illustrated edition of the story of the Wandering Jew from the mid 19th century. The illustrations are set to a poem about the Wandering Jew by Pierre-Jean de Ranger. The story of the Wandering Jew dates back to the crucifixion of Christ. The story relates that as Jesus was being led to the spot of his crucifiction a Jewish man shouted insults at him and in response Jesus said “'Verily I say unto you There be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” This meant that until the return of Christ this Jewish man would be forced to live and wander the earth. Of course over the centuries there have been “spottings” of the Wandering Jew. Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré 1832 – 1883 was a French artist printmaker illustrator and sculptor. The New York School was an informal group of American poets painters dancers and musicians active in the 1950s and 1960s in New York City. They often drew inspiration from surrealism and the contemporary avant-garde art movements in particular action painting abstract expressionism jazz improvisational theater experimental music and the interaction of friends in the New York City art world's vanguard circle. Frank O'Hara was at the center of the group before his death in 1966. Because of his numerous friendships and his post as a curator at the Museum of Modern Art he provided connections between the poets and painters such as Jane Freilicher Fairfield Porter and Larry Rivers who was O'Hara's lover. There were many joint works and collaborations particularly between poets such as O'Hara Kenneth Koch John Ashbery and James Schuyler: Rivers inspired a play by Koch Koch and Ashbery together wrote the poem "A Postcard to Popeye" Ashbery and Schuyler wrote the novel A Nest of Ninnies and Schuyler collaborated on an ode with O'Hara whose portrait was painted by Rivers. Ron Padgett Dick Gallup Joe Brainard and Ted Berrigan came to the group from Tulsa Oklahoma. Koch O'Hara Schuyler and Ashbery were quite different as poets but they admired each other and had much in common personally: All four were inspired by French Surrealists such as Raymond Roussel Pierre Reverdy and Guillaume Apollinaire.
