1866réf. B5284London: Cassell Petter and Galpin c. 1866. A fine and handsome example of this work. The text and plates are clean and crisp. . Binding: Contemporary full green cloth binding. Top board with gilt text and tooled borders. Notes: A superbly illustrated edition of the story of the Wandering Jew from the mid 19th century. The illustrations are set to a poem about the Wandering Jew by Pierre-Jean de Ranger. The story of the Wandering Jew dates back to the crucifixion of Christ. The story relates that as Jesus was being led to the spot of his crucifiction a Jewish man shouted insults at him and in response Jesus said “'Verily I say unto you There be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” This meant that until the return of Christ this Jewish man would be forced to live and wander the earth. Of course over the centuries there have been “spottings” of the Wandering Jew. Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré 1832 – 1883 was a French artist printmaker illustrator and sculptor. From the preface: "Over the centuries London has been visited by many artists from abroad and this exhibition is an attempt to illustrate how each visitor has in turn found inspiration from the city. The exhibition interprets this 'image' of London, reveals how the city has changed through four hundred years, and explores the idea of the city in the mind of the visitors and their response to it. Wyngaerde was the earlist artist to attempt to represent the city with relative accuracy. He conceived London as a great Gothic city with many towers and spires. Thomas Wyek may have witnessed the Great Fire, and he certainly painted several views of it. After the Fire, London was rapidly rebuilt and expanded. The subsequent completion of the new cathedral and the City's increasing commercial success attracted many traveller-artists. With its bustling market, Covent Garden was a favourite subject of the 18th-century artists such as Van Aken and Angillis. By contrast the serene Thames views of Canaletto and Joli recall Venice, and their interpretation of London as a city of grace and enlightenment seem more in keeping with the neo-classical order that fashioned the second half of the 18th Century. In the 19th Century artists began to depict the darker side of London. Focusing upon scenes of labour, poverty and suffering in an oppressive industrial environment, G?ricault and Dor? portrayed the Babylonian image of London. Nevertheless, Victorian London was also shown as a city of success and wealth. The river scenes of Whistler, and the busy, yet fashionable Street scenes of Bianche, Tissot and De Nittis represent it as essentially a hive of activity, business and busy-ness. Wistler and Monet were also inspired by the atmosphere of London, the foggy and nocturnal views ...

"In the 1870s The Doré Bible was perhaps the most treasured and expensive book in the world" Malan 81. Certainly it proved a milestone in Doré's career. Doré's illustrations for the Bible first published in French in 1866 were a great success and in 1867 Doré had a major exhibition of his work in London which led to the founding of Doré Gallery in Bond Street London. Doré's "Bible was enthusiastically sponsored by one of the greatest French publishers of illustrated books of the day Mame of Tours… Its original reception was truly remarkable… A second edition of the Bible was called for almost at once… Editions appeared in almost every European country… One of the first off the mark was an English edition from Cassell Petter and Galpin 1867. This caused an even greater sensation than the French edition and the demand among collectors for any and everything by Doré was clamorous" Muir 224.
